Default What engine for YA Spitfire

I need to buy an engine for my Yellow Aircraft Spitfire. I am considering between the ZDZ 50cc or the ZDZ 40cc. They have the Zdz 40cc in stock but I am concern that it may make the plane a little under powered. I expect the plane to come in at about 23 or 24 pounds with CG weight included.

I prefer to fly with abit of reserve power. So guys what you think? I fly at sea level, hot and humid

I plan on using the 3W50, long output shaft and plenty of power. Dependable and good rep at Aircraft International.

The Spychalla's use ZDZ40's in their spits and they fly great. http://www.spychallaaircraft.com/

Personally, due to lousy and rude customer service from RCS, I have no intention of ever purchasing anything from them. Not knocking ZDZ, just the distributor.

Here is my friend Lars Y/A Spit. 3-W 50 with Johnsson muffler. Flys great. I would go for a 50 cc.
Here is a link to ZDZ europe, I think their doing ok[link]http://www.zdz-motor.de[/link].
Good luck

I would go with the ZDZ 40. It fly's great with it and you wouldn't lose as much cowl. I've seen many fly with this setup from Top Gun, to Joe Nall, to the Masters.

Beautiful planes Tobbe, what weight does your plane come in at. I looked at the European distributer site and it showed that the ZDZ 60 was 40 euros cheaper than than the ZDZ 50. In that case should I get a 60?

I have a 3W-70 in mine with a custom muffler. Loads of power and almost completely concealed.

Build really light in the tail! Toss the plywood and substitute balsa. Toss the stab and build a balsa one. You are going to need to do this to hit 24 lbs. The ZDZ 40 is good. Not a real powerhouse but adequate. I think the 50 uses the same castings as the 60, so it is a big engine that would be tough to hide.

Beautiful planes guys... Spychalla, what muffler are you using? I will probably settle for the Zdz 50 with that muffler. With the Euros going up is RC Showcase maintaining their prices?

The muffler is a B&B canister. Not much muffling, but we like them to have a bit of a crackle. With only a 40cc nobody has ever complained about the noise. but a bigger bore engine might be too loud for some fields. We went with this simple muffler set-up for speed of installation, convenience, performance and reliability. The B&B hit the mark on all counts.

What would be the best muffler to use with the ZDZ 50. I would like to minimize cutting the cowl.

[&:] I use the good ole G-45 or Q-52. I don't mind a little engine sticking out.
