Default ME 109 G6 - New Kit

Hey guys, I have been planning for sometime to build a 1/5 scale ME 109 G6. To this point, I knew of only one kit from Unitracts Internatioal that unfortunately was out of my price range. So, I had pretty much made up my mind to build the Dave Platt semi-kit. Wasn't too thrilled about building it up from plans due to time considerations.

The other day, an internet buddy of mine informed me about a company in Germany called, "Sunshine Modell und Hobby GmbH" who produce several 1/5 and 1/6 scale models with epoxy glass fuses and wood covered foam wings. What was surprising to me was the cost. The 109 G6 runs for $500 USD counting the VAT. Not sure of shipping costs. Anyway, the kit seems to include pretty much everything except spinner and retracts. They are available also, but the retracts are a bit pricy, but look great in the picture.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the vendor, their models, etc. Specific into about this kit would be really cool. Here is the link to the model --> http://www.wega-sunshine.de/english/shop/index.html

rojo,

That's an interesting site. I hadn't heard of that company before. As for your 1/5th Bf-109, yes, Platt offers a great design though the building techniques are showing their age. It's worth it if you put in the effort. An alternative would be a Meister Scale 84" Bf-109. It's not 100% scale but if you're not competing, it looks good enough to count. Lenny Sarbin at Shindin Machine offers quality retracts for both of these planes, by the way. And no high prices or Value Added Tax nonsense!

Al,
Thanks for the update. Not really interested in Jim Meister's planes. I guess they are OK if one wants fun scale, but I am looking to build a scale bird, possibly for competition. So, Jim's are out. I did get the semi kit from Dave Platt. While it has a scale outline, some of the detail is not correct. I have already started modifing the plans - the wing hinge lines, aileron cross section, aileron mounts, flaps, etc (something I really did not want to get into). Its going to take me a long time now to do this plane which has caused me to think things over. Thats why I am interested to see if any other folks have looked at this company / model.

FYI - I have a set of retracts from Lenny for my Holman FW-190A. They look great and I am sure will work fine. I plan to get another set from him for my 109 once I figure out what I am going to do.

Rob,
Have you had any luck contacting wega-sunshine about their kits. I've sent them an email about purchasing and shipping to the USA the Me-163 but have not heard anything back (unless maybe that is their answer). Thanks, Paul

Marshall,
No luck so far. I sent them a email requesting the same information, but have heard nothing back. I am going to touch base with the guy I was conversing with before about the 109.

You may already know this, but Bob Holman offers a fiberglass 1/5th scale ME-163. That likely would be the better option as Bob is extremely reliable. Also, I came across one of the best single web sites dedicated to Comet. Huge amount of info there along with some cool RC stuff. Hope this helps. http://www.sml.lr.tudelft.nl/~home/rob/me163.htm

Rob,
I heard back from them today. They'll be happy to ship to the USA. The shipping is really high, but if you want it you pay it. I've got the Holman glass kit (price is actually less than the shipping on the Sunshine kit). I think I'll place an order with them anyway as it sounds like a really nice kit. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the link to the Comet link. Paul

Paul,
Funny, I just heard back from WEGA-Sunshine also today. They indicate the approximate cost to ship to the US is 200 EUR. Yuck! So, to get one of these babies here is what one would have to pay (Euros followed by USD):

Kit Cost: 355.50 $465.35
VAT: 56.88 $ 74.46
Shipping: 200.00 $261.80
Total Cost: 612.38 $801.61

Little pricy for me but for others, perhaps not so bad. I will need to think long and hard about this before making the investment.

I also heard back from a buddy of mine in the UK about the kit. Here is what he has to say,

"The 'kit' so far needs a fair bit of builder input. The plans are ok but there are no real instructions as such. All you really get with the kit is the fuse, covered foam wings, clear canopy, balsa parts and wingtips. The tail wheel, spinner and retracts are extra. The kit itself for the price is not bad. However, much work is required to make it impressive. Also, no hinges, horns or pushrods are included."

Sounds like my Bob Holman FW190A kit which by the way was far far cheaper. So, there you have it.

Paul,
I forgot one other thing. Can you keep me posted on your "Comet adventures" I am very interested in this subject, and one day plan to do one. I got really interested after I read Wolfgang Spate's book, 'Top Secret Bird'.

I'm not sure about the G6, but Jeff Foley sounds like he is going to produce a kit of his Top Gun and Nats winning ME 109.

Yea, I heard that also. That would be great. I believe is model is an ME 109 E7 if memory servers me correctly. I would also like to model that as well. I have the Bryan Tailor plans for a 109E. Looks like its about 1/5.5 scale. They are truely scale in every respect. Great set of plans. There is even a website on the internet that a French fellow hosts about building that plane. Its a pretty cool site. However, it requires fabrication of just about everything (including the wheels). It would really take a long time to knock out one of Bryan's planes. So, I look forward to Jeff's kit!h

You should not have to VAT. I bought a Laser 120 from England without paying the tax. If you will the VAT is like our surtax which is not charged to a out of state purchase.

Hi

Also on the Platt, althogh a nice drawing in general, the Platt flying spinner backplate is smaller by aprox 1/4" than the part of the cowl it meets up with.

Also, unlike the taylor 109E, Platts model does not have the asymetrical airfoil Vstab as per the full scale one.

Thats way I'm doinga plug for my own 80" full composite one. Well one day I'll finish it..

That fuse looks great. The detail on the manifold is fantastic.

Rob,
Placed an order for the Comet and got a reply that they would send me an proforma invoice (with final cost including postage) so I can make payment arrangements. From what they told me 200 Euro is the top postage cost (probly for their big Corsair kit) and what you pay will actually be less. I'll let you know when I know more. Paul

Rob

Thanks.

I plan on making a vac form and resin DB 605 engine for static display. One sees alot of radials but no inlines. Of course, I had hoped on already having finished this model also!

Slowly but surley.

Hi all,

first of all, best regards from Germany, Augsburg, located in bavaria! [8D]

You asked for a 109 G in 1:5 ?

I would recommend the one from http://www.roedelmodell.de
a little bit tricky to find: >> web-shop >> modelle >> s-klasse
some pictures also in the gallery...
also not 100% scale, but IMHO be best 109 in this size money can buy,
I have built several of it the last years!

available in US:
Euroscale Aeroplane, LLC
Harry Gigas
59 Beechwood Dr.
Madison, CT 06443
e-mail: [email protected]

and: I am NOT related to them in any way!

whenever further info related to 109 wanted, let me know!

my actual project: 109 in 1:3, made of factory-drawings!

Steve,

Impressive work, Bud! Do keep us informed of your progress, okay?

I absolutely love those exhaust manifolds! Did you mold them? If so, would you be willing to make another set? I have a Platt 109 that could really use a set of those. You may leave me a PM if you prefer.

one-o-nine

That 1/3 scale model is really something. I'm building an all composite 109G2/6. I noticed you beat me to the resin DB 605 too.

Good luck

nice work

Al,

which size of the exhaust do you need? 1:4? should be no problem,
they are made from old factory drawings, completely new redrawn
with 3D-CAD, a new set of cnc-milled molds, not a big deal... [8D]

I have updated also the page of the 1:3 - project with a lot of new
pictures, english version of text for it is coming asap!

One-o-nine,

I can't thank you enough for the information about Rodelmodell. From what I have been able to research, the 109 from Rodelmodell is clearly superior to the 109 from Sunshine. The kit is more complete and the quality is better. Panel lines are already molded into the fuselage; comes with a scale tail bracket and wheel, wings are sheeted with leading and trailing edges, etc.

I contacted Harry Gigas from Euroscale Aeroplane in the US. He is really a pleasant fellow to deal with. He is not quite ready for business yet. Still getting organized. But, I am pretty sure I am going to get 'Die Hundertneun' from him (assuming its not too expensive - he hasn't yet quoted me a price but indicated it would be comparable to the Sunshine kit).

I just can't get over your 1/3rd scale 109. If I did not know better, I would assume the photos were of a full scale 109. Clearly you are doing pioneering work using original plans and rendering them through CAD. I need to get a decent CAD package and learn it. I am sure it would be immense help designing and building new models and parts. I will put that on my 'to-do' list.

In the meantime, if you are planning on 1/4 scale manifold would it also be possible to do one a 1/5th scale manifold for my Rodelmodell?

Pictures to follow. Thanks again for all your help.

I wasn't aware Makay carried a 109. I know they carry a 1/4 scale 190 and a real cool ME-262 (that I would love to have). But thats it.

Help!
Does anyone know a quick and dirty way of attaching jpegs? I suppose I could fart around for an hour or two and figure it out, but if someone has a 1-2-3 approach, that would save me time.
