Greatplanes P-51D 40 size engine choices
Hi all,
Just got my GP P-51 40 kit.
I would appreciate any suggestions anyone might have for a 2 cycle engine that would be suitable for this kit.
The kit calls for 40-46 2 cycle engines, but since I'm intersted in a speedy result would like to consider bigger engiens that would fit the kit and wouldn't pose a balance issue.
Thanks in advance,
Biton

Another choice is the Irvine 53.....i have one in my P-51....most reliable engine I have ever owned...great top end and idles like a dream...for speed use a 10-8 APC and for scale use a 12-6...this engine can easily handle the large props

I have a webra speed 50 in mine and fly's wicked and pretty fast with great vertical.Just make sure you put retracts in it .It sure is amazing to see how much speed you lose with the wheels down.Great flying plane.I wonder why they never made a .60 size one?

Hey guys,
Thanks for the replies.
Joey - the Webra 50 is one of my candidates. Do you use a pitts or standard muffler with it. Is it OK to mount this engine 90 degrees to the side ?

I used the Great Planes 60 size retracts....after two seasons, no problems. i would caution against the Hobbico retracts, they will not have the staying power of the GPs

Has anyone put a Four stroke in this plane? I was thinking of a 61fs magnum for this plane. What would you guys think? Is there a pnumatic retract system that would fit in this plane?
Thanks for any replies

I don't think the plane has room for a penumatic system. I plan on using mechanical retracts. I've also heard the the Hobbico parts don't last long, so I got the GP 40 size retracts.

I fly mine with B & D mechanical .60 size retracts. Seem to be very sturdy and plane is 5 years old with well over 200 flights and many rough landings on grass feild.

This is a sport type plane, designed around the sportster wing....A .91 four cycle , and air retracts are overkill for a plane that weighs under 6#. a .46 engine, and mechanical retracts makes this a great performing plane....If those parts need a home, the T. F. G.E. 60 has seven in. more wingspan, and can be built under 10#, and would perform well with the .91 and air retracts...

Biton ,I had a brisson muffler that was for my OS 46 sf ,and I mounted it on the webra and redrilled a new hole and taped it.Mine is mounted sideways.I used hobbico retracts .Second landing alittle to hard and shadered the insides. My dad and I machined new inners out of aircraft alumminum .The other parts of the retracts are still glassfilled nylon.and I have never had any problems since. What I like about the setup I have, is with the adjustment screw in the hobbico uints I can adjust and keep them tight, with very little woble.
I have a 60 size topflight mustang I'm finishing up so ,we'll see which one I will like better, for flying. The topflight one is going scale so I know I will like the looks of that one better.
The great planes mustang fly's like a dream, and when you don't want to fly scale like It's not bad a aerobatics ,thanks to the full strip alerons.I'm really happy with mine and you won't be disapointed.
Thanks
Joe

RE: Greatplanes P-51D 40 size engine choices
Hey all,
The manual calls for hollowing out the right wing tip (using a dremel or such) after shaping it from the stock balsa block.
It is supposed to compensate for the "off center weight" caused by mounting the engine in a 90 degrees position.
Is this trully necessary ? Has anyone tried leaving it whole ?

Not worth the effort.......if weight is needed, I go inside the last rib opening, and add some wood screws, threads dipped in epoxy, to the inside of the block...Takes VERY little weight on the tip to compensate for the off center engine... this is an important step in trimming the plane, and easy to accomplish...
