RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Here's the latest on my squadron. Nothing like big warbirds and maintenance !
Kittyhawk MkIa- Vibrations have gotten the best of the forward wing dowel, so a brass insert is being added to the fuse to provide a tighter fit. One of the wing bolt blocks (drilled and tapped) has had some threading issues, may need to drill out, install a dowel and redrill the 1/4-20 hole. Possible dirt in the carb or a little overheating going on, I was getting a slow speed surge when on final, not good for the glide slope or the nerves.
Thunderbolt MkI - All looks good, although I have a lot of vibration in my port aileron, it appears the nylon hinge has worn so a larger diameter wire may be installed. I have also been debating changing the music wire out in favor of brass cotter pins. Other than that, she's good to go. I still need to paint the nav lights on.
Mustang MkIII - Still dealing with my lousy wiring job on my magneto switch, think I've got that solved. Vibration of the wire kept breaking at the solder joint. I've upped the wire size and added strain relief. I tried an APC 20 x 10 prop last time out, quite pleased. It was quieter and seemed to pull better versus the pro-zinger 20 x 10. Also, I had some suspiscion that I was a little on the tail heavy side, the APC is much heavier then the Zinger, I was pleased with the balance change, it was not far off, just a little fine tuning.
Yellow Spit - I have moved my shop back to my mother's house, loads more room. Work is about to begin ! I'm starting at the wing.
H9 Mustang 1.50 - Glassed, filled and primed. I am looking to get rid of this bird when she's done. I may get the basic assembly done and move it. It has an RCS 1.80 and Robarts with scale type struts and wheels, the new rails have been installed.
KMP Hurri - On her way, I'm looking to go electric to keep the nose clean. Might end up as a petrol burner though.
Tiger Moth- She needs a real annual inspection, batteries need cycling and replacing, decided she needs a cooling baffle for the OS120, flying wires and closed loop systems need inspection and replacement.
Yikes, loads of work to do ! Nothing like maintenance ! I'm just starting to get over a nasty cold so, look out shop !
Love the pictures guys ! Keep em' coming !

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
BTW,
On June 25th, our club, Freestate Aeromodelers of Maryland are having a large scale fly-in. It's looking to be a real super event, lots of interest. This is the first event we've done in a while and we're looking forward to a great show, if you're in the area, bring a scale bird out and join in the fun.
I'll have at least my four main kites out, other warbirds are scheduled to attend, including Unteroffizer's Top Gun team scale FW190A8 entry ! Maybe ES335 can bring the PCM 'yellow 5' in 'under construction' mode ?!?!?!?! Many folks do not realise how much goes into these projects and seeing some in process might be good.
FSA wishes Bill "Unter" Cunningham, GOODLUCK at top gun ! Bill, Andy and the butcher bird are gonna wow em' !

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
I've flown both of those birds, stuka and the modeltech bolt. The bolt is cake to fly as far as a warsportbird goes. The stuka a nice reporoduction with some nice characteristics. I had pondered making one into a desert bird.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
I've flown one with an os61fx and it's great, nice scale aircraft, dive bombing runs are great. I have also flown an overpowered beast with a OS1.08, absurd ! It required retrimming for every throttle change !
It I built one, I'd go for an OS 91FX, the saito will do, I just like OS better. The OS120FS is too much.

Even at 10 plus pages of posts there are still some warbirds that have not shown up here.

Dear All
I thought I would start a thread for those who love World War Two
Fighters. Be it British, American, German, Japanese, Russian, French, etc, etc.
I love Em.
I will start the ball rolling with some pics of my Spitfire, P51D Mustang and Spitfire in flight.
I have just started to build a 1/4 scale Spit IX, from the MIck Reeves plans.
I will start a seperate thread for that.
Regards Phil Goff.

Here are a couple more pictures showing it running and in flight. Please excuse the poor quality flight picture.

The Bearcat got to the war too late so we will never know what impact it may have had.
Here is my Boecamp Bearcat powered by a DA-150 and finished as the Gulfhawk IV.

This is called having fun with your T-bolt.
Make a high speed pass down wind over the runway and pull up into a loop while putting the gear down. At the top of the loop roll out, cut the throttle and put in full flaps and slide on down to a landing.
This is my 10 yr.old YA P-47 with a Brison 2.4 and finished as Captain Howard Hiveley's "The Deacon".

Looking at the static picture of the P-47 makes me realize that they should be photographed with the scale four blade prop to keep them from looking so funny.

Dear All
I have just been sent a pic of my mustang and Mark Hintons tf arf.
They are both finished in the John D Landers Big Beautiful Doll scheme.
Which were based at my beloved Duxford.
I will post it here shortly, as the person who took it is entering it in a magazine photo comp.
Trust me it is worth waiting for.
Regards Phil G.
PS. I was at the VE show at Duxford yesterday, a bit on the cold side, but a fantastic day
with several veterans present, some from the American side of the pond.

Hmmmmm, other than two flights in 20 mph winds Saturday, all I got to do is watch the wind blow, and you complain that it was cold ?

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Here's another P-51D to add to the collection. It is scratch built from RCM plans, powered by a Saito 91 and the covering was done with the foil type duct tape. Thats right, duct tape. Every little peice is cut individualy and represents the panel lines. Got about 50 hours in the covering alone . Mechanical retracts and a sliding canopy finish it off for detail. It's a smooth flyer but it is not flown much these days due to my recent interest in WW-I planes.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
SpitfireMK1.... This is the first time I have opened this forum, and was pleasantly surprised at the worldwide interest in that era....In 1940, I was an age 14 farm boy fascinated by airplanes, and the air war in Europe. I hero worshipped the swaggering Spit and Hurry pilots, and would have killed for a pair of the sheepskin boots.. I recognized many by name, Sailor Malan, Paddy Finucane, Bob Tuck, and Bader.... but hundreds of others served with courage and patriotism, and at age 79, I cannot pull up their names.... My dream of being a pilot never materialized after I enlisted in WW2, as I wound up in an aircrew, flying with the 334th Troop Carrier as a radio operator... I still have faded photos of a 14 yr.old with his models, a Hurry, P-40, and a large( .25 cent) model of a Stuka. I have admiration for you young men today, respecting those special people, who willingly put their lives on the line for mankind.....

Dear All
I can't believe when I posted those VE day pics from Duxford that I did not mention the "Debt of Gratitude" we all owe to those people who gave every thing, so that we might be free.
We can never repay them.
I think everybody who has posted on this thread will agree with this.
To all veterans who gave and suffered so much.
We salute you.
Regards Phil Goff.

RE: For those who love World War Two Fighters
Many thanks to all persons in the services, then and now.
Hey Phil G.,
Picking up a KMP Hurri today, can't wait to get her going, looking to find a chap's plane from 32 squadron who did not make it through. Then I'll paint her as such. Thinking either a Ryobi conversion or maybe the RCS 1.80 I have sitting around. I'll have to see how it fits.
The Yellow Spit is making progress, working on the flaps right now. I set up some hinge points but I may go back and redo the whole deal, not sure if I'm happy with the way I did it. So two steps forward, maybe one back []
Mustang's canopy cracked so I had to graft a new one on and my Kittyhawk la had a fuel tank leak [:@] That was caused by the Sullivan stopper. I like Sullivan and have worked with them before on some UAV stuff, but those stoppers need to be re-thought. The material over time just gives up and starts falling apart. I've now switch to Dubro for my tanks. BTW, we had the same problem with the custom UAV tanks they made. It was thought they had used the material for glow fuel but they insisted they had not. Maybe they have changed the material by now ?
These big birds always seem to need some kind of maintenance, seems like I get about three outings, 10-12 flights, and I gotta fix something. Loads of fun but I suppose the real ones were not much better.
