RE: Top Flite Corsair almost finished !!
I attempted to glass the fuse. this weekend. I got most of it done, but I am struggling with it. I'm using z-poxy thinned with denatured alcohol. I final sand the wood with 400 grit paper, and apply glass. I start out okay, but I invariably get ripples in the cloth that have to be sanded out and filled. I apply epoxy with disposable brushes. It also doesn't help when the air temp hasn't dipped below 100 all weekend!!
What am I doing wrong. I'll post a couple of pics when the glassing is done.

I little more progress to show. I finally figured out I was not thinning the epoxy enough. This caused some rippled fabric and excess goop to sand off. Then I painted the whole thing with thinned auto body filler to fill in all my goofs. I have been tinkering with this thing for a very long time, but I'm seeing light at the end of the tunnel!

The next pictures show a camouflage pattern after sanding, sanding, and more sanding. Man, my arms were tired after that, but I wanted to remove as much material as possible. Then I hit it with some primer.

Nice work so far! Why not just get a set of Royal Corsair plans? The TF fuselage is also wrong and will have to be completely redesigned. Of all the Royal kit's the Corsair has the fewest blocks used in it's construction. I have the plans and parts sheet on CD if you need help with that. The parts sheet has all the ply and balsa wood parts shown on the size of sheet you need, so just 3M spray adhesive them to the correct size wood and cut out your kit!

Luke, I am very interested in obtaining a set of Royal plans and templates. Please contact me to make arrangement.
I also saw where Rocketman maidened his new corsair. He did an awesome job!!!! Check out his thread.

Looking Great so far. And yes: sand, sand, sand, and sand some more. I seem to recall some saying that applying a painted finish isn't much more difficult/ time consuming that covering with iron on covering: BULL*****! But is it worth it? HELL YES!

Your plane is looking good. Have you decided on a scheme yet.

The color scheme will be a tri-color. You can see the three colors in earlier pics of the wings. I'm using spray paint, so the colors aren't very realistic. I have some cool decals on order from Cal-graphics.
If I had applied the epoxy correctly, I wouldn't have to sand so much. Sloppier work requires more effort to correct.
I plan to use the original cowl and mount it per the instructions. I will glue the cowl to the ring and bolt it to the fuse as one pc. I am using #8 screws for the cowl, not the #4 called for.
The only thing I haven't worked on is a baffle. I definitely want to use one, but I haven't determined how to mount it yet.

Hi KELSEY,LOOOOOKING GOOOOOD,man LOOOking GOOOOD!!! THERE should be a simple pattern for the baffle on your blue-prints it will fit the TOP FLT cowl nicely, plus you need that piece if your going to get their dummy engine. Just decide if your gonna use that dummy first, other wise, you`ll be in for some DE-structing to get the baffle out to put the dummy in,it relys on the baffle for support. Are you intrested in a cock pit kit its finished and ready to install. It`s THE wrong one for an F4U-5,so I`ve got to scratch build one, another hold up for me[:@]
I`m intrested in those plans too but would like to scale up to 1:4!!!!wonder if I`d run in to some trouble with doing that??? DAVE B.

Thanks for the compliments guys. It motivates it me to go home and work on this thing. I painted the bottom of the fuse white last night. With the Rustoleum, I have to wait five days before I can apply a second color, but I still have alot of work to do on the cowl.
I do not plan to use a cockpit interior or dummy radial. Nothing fancy. This is my first crack at a warbird, along with glassing and paint. I also have to learn to fly this thing, so it may get used and abused.
As for the baffle, I can use the template on the plans, but I have to figure out how to install it. Also remember that the cowl attaches with four screws near the firewall. I either have to go thru the baffle, or figure out a way where it can be removed when needed. I don't want any screws on the outside of the cowl. I'm sure I can figure something out this week. I simply have messed with it yet.
Also thanks to Luke and Jim for their continued support and encouragement. They have shown me that so much more can be done to these kits to improve them. I'm really excited about trying another corsair. I just hope this one lives for awhile.

RE: Top Flite Corsair almost finished !!
KELSEY you just drill a couple little holes,in the baffle, in line with the firewall screws mounting ears, large enough for the screws to to be inserted through. You just need to have a magnetized screwdriver long enough to reach to the fire-wall,it will hold on to your screws till they get treaded in.If you got a tool thats long enough,it can be a cheap piece O cr@p you only need to get them started, and you can then use a none magnitized one to tighten them down. Just drag it screw-driver across an old speaker magnet a couple times and you`ll end up with a magnetized screwdriver that can be used as a pick-up tool for other hard to reach places.Bonus[8D] .DAVE B.

If you are looking for stars and bars decals, try this site: [link]http://www.cal-grafx.com/[/link]
All you do is select the correct diameter and add them to your shopping cart. They have the decals in both "water slide" and "Vinyl" formats. They even have letterings and such.

Dave, that is the cleanest method, and I do have a long hex driver. My only concern is lack of vision. You can't see anything with the baffle permanently glued in front, but it may be doable. Just have to feel around for the bolts.
Richard, I have placed an order from cal-graphics for decals. Jim helped me with correct circle dia's.
Thanks
Keith

RE: Top Flite Corsair almost finished !!
Kelsey you could go with a stud in the firewall, or a star washer ,that will hold the screw in the ear((tab) but either way you `ll end up tooling it in from the front? I wont have this issue because I`m making WORKING cowl flaps and the F4U-5 cowl will have to be made In 2 pieces,a back half with all the mechanisms , and the front that has the scoops, should look pretty "TRICK"!!!! Is that term even used anymore???.....D.B.

Very nice job on your Corsair. If your doing the tri-color, I always like to do the stars with the red border in which if you cannot find decals, is easy to make with either auto pinstripping or mask and paint. These were used for only a short period in 1943 on F4U-1As and early FGs and really make a nice visibility aid.

Here is another great site to order decals from: [link]http://www.cajunrc.com/Model_Graphics/MG-Home/mg_home.htm[/link]
Denny also has stars and bars with red outline and can do custom decals for you. However, he currently doesn't do water slide decals.

I highly recommend Denny. I used his graphics for my Corsair. He was able to resize them for the 60 size Kit.

Okay guys, finally got some paint sprayed. I need to pay more attention when I'm masking. There are a couple of areas I planned to cover with dark blue that didn't happen. I also planned to paint the fin light blue, but forgot about it.
Yes, I do have kiddos, so there is some clutter in the pics. I keep thinking to myself while I continue to work this is that all this work could be wiped out on the first flight.
