RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
I have the tail feathers together and one wing ready for skin. I thought I would breeze through this plane but had the problems around the flaps and not getting glass parts to move on to the fuse, or retracts to get the wings done, etc etc etc. AND the IMAC season is around the corner and my eyes are back onto a new Composite ARF Super Extra 40% I will be trying to get dialed in.
Engine??? I was looking at a 3W106 maybe. I just couldn't figure it out without the cowl in my hands. I want to make sure I don't have to cut out any of the cowl to loose the scale look. Not too much on the Don Smith here or on RCSCALEBUILDERS.COM to get an idea of engines and other building ideas.
Keep me posted on your progress...maybe it will fire me back up again to see someone moving forward.

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
Hello, My dad, Tony and I are building a 112" don smith mustang. We were wondering where did you lot put your batterys and what type of batterys did you use? and did you put the fuel tank in the same place as per drawing? also has anyone flow one with a 95cc engine in it?, after looking at other builds we are worried that this engine is too small. Has anyone got a sliding conopy? if you have how did you get the canopy to slide?.
I will post some pics when I can figure out how to!

I'd like to start one as well. Looks like kit cutters isn't taking anymore orders for now. They are trying to catch up. Any suggestions on some good cutters? Also, where are some good fiberglass sites for the cowel an other parts? I'm thinking of putting a 160 inline in mine an useing Sierra Retracts. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

RE: Don Smith P51 mustang
My dad used searra retracts in his mustang but had some trouble fitting them. The main bracket that actually connects the retract to the wing fitted in ok but needed modifying slightly to get it to fit. The bracket that connects the retract to the retract doors had to be turned round. There was also a problem getting the wheels to retract far enough, so make sure that you have the clearance within the wing to allow the wheels to retract otherwise the wheels will stick out a little. As far as kit cutters are concerned bel air have a Don Smith Mustang kit available. You can also buy all the fiberglass parts from them for the plane. The engine cowl is too big and so is the cockpit canopy. To get the cockpit canopy to slide is a nightmare!. Don smith recommends that the main wings are made with the ailerons and the flaps in ONE piece and these are to be cut out on completion of the sheeting of the wing. This could end in disaster as there is a possibility that you could end up cutting in to critical parts of the wing. My dad made the flaps and ailerons seperately to eliminate this risk. The engine that is being used is a brison engine with a custom made exhaust that actually directs the exhaust gases out through the exhaust stacks in the engine cowl just like the full sized bird!. The finnished weight will be approx. 70 - 75lbs and has been built as per drawing. The engine seems to have enough power to get it off the ground. I will try to post some pics but I struggle to post pics on RC universe.
