Hanger 9 P-40 Warhawk
I just purchased the H9 P-40 Warhawk, and wanted to know if the standard retracts will hold up on grass fields. Our field is a little rough but not real bad. Does anybody make better mechanical retracts that will drop right in. Thank's for any advice.

Thank's Richard. Who makes pneumatics that will fit with little work, and what order No. do I need. I'm new to retracts so I don't know much about them.

The stock retracts are worthless piece of crap. I had Century Jet Models guys build a set for my H9 P-40. I got the prototype from them. The 100 degree rotating set they make is strong as hell and very reliable. I've had close to 25 flights on mine with no problems. James at CJM is the guy you want to talk to. Remember to tell him to make the air cylinder nipple point downward, not sideways like they did mine, to avoid hitting the rib. You only need to cut through the upper spar to clear the gear housing. I used the stout gear housing to brace the open area and it's plenty strong to support that area. I can send pics of my install if you buy the set from CJM, about $260.[:-]

Thanks kmtranmd, CJM does show a set on there websight for $275.00 just for the P-40. I am still going to give them a call and ask about the cylinder nipple. If you would, please send pics of your installation. You can post them here or send them to me at [email protected]. Thank's a bunch.

The Manual retracts will do great if you land perfect. If you don't the turnbuckles on the rotation part of the retract lets loose and both wheels will be sideways. If that happens better have good fiberglass repair skills or a new engine cowl.

well, I use the std retracts on grass, and that's no problem,...
I find them reliable and sturdy.
of course you need to land gently, but I didn't get any problem in 40 flights....

The only things that are "Worthless piece of crap" are the pilots who can not land the plane on stock retracts
honestly go back to a trainer and learn how to land if you need super heavy duty stuff like that on a 60 size plane.
