Default World Models .60 Spitfire

I just bought one of these. I haven't received it yet. Anybody else got one or flown one? I'm trying to decide what to install for power. Any bad habits or weaknesses to fix during the assembly process?

Thanks!

Just got mine too - putting it together. No real issues. I am going to put in a 91 FS. Look forward to finding out how she gows. Will let you know.

One of my buddies is flying one with an OS .91FS pumper, and it flies real nice and fast. With flaps down, she comes in slow for a nice landing. I had a YS 110FZ in mine, and it flew like a rocket. On the first ground throttle up, the engine separated one side of the firewall, so I had to go in with heavy glass cloth and epoxy. The plane will tip stall if you come in too slow without flaps, so watch your landing speed and use flaps.

I am not so happy with the color scheme - thought of putting on invasion stripes - any ideas?

Hmmm.... That could be cool. I painted some on my H9 P51 and they turned out great!! I think you're right, the color scheme is a bit bland out of the box.

Folks, here is a picture of the full size:

The color scheme on the WM version is fairly accurate, with white and dark blue stripes on the wing. There are no invasion stripes.

Thanks Richard -

Okay great so now I don't need to make changes. I was just concerned as I had never seen a spit in the scheme before - the original looks fantastic. Do you have any info on the original? Thanks again.

Greg, the original used to belong to Bob Pond (Planes of Fame East). I don't know where the plane is now, but you might want to google "Bob Pond Spitfire". I'm sure something will pop up.

There are on this one.... Sorry Richard, I just had to find one...

Although most of the pics I found had no invasion stripes. Most Spitfire pics are from the Battle of Brittain which was decided before D-day. I just like the way they look on a straffing run fly by.

It's interesting to note how messy they were while painting on those stripes... It was all function for them whereas today it's all about the WOW factor!!

Yes, but the Spit shown in the picture is an earlier mark and not the plane that the WM Spit is modeled after (note the malcolm canopy).

So the WM is an earlier model?

No, the WM is a late model (using the Griffon engine instead of Merlin). The full size was based in Hong Kong around the time of D-day.

Okay... so I give up, how do you know it's based in Hong Kong?

Hi All,

Ready to maiden my spit this weekend - hold thumbs! No issues with the build hardest part was putting on the control surface push rod arms - never seem to be able to get the third bolt aligned! Will be going with a Thunder Tiger 91 fs - will report back.

The trick is to use T pins. Look at the pins from two different directions to make sure they are perpendicular to the control surface. Then push the pins all the way through. Then slap the back plate on to see if the pins go through all three holes. If not, pull out the pin, make the appropriate correction, and push the pin all the way in again. Once the pins fit through the backplate, then you can remove them and drill the three holes.

WM is calling for a 61 2 stroke or a 70 4 stroke... Do you think a YS 91AC would be a bit much for this model? They say 7.5 Lbs....
BTW- the factory retracts, trash em or keep em?

YS 91AC would be perfect for this model. Just remember to reinforce the firewall. You will need to add nose weight with the other engines. Factory retracts are decent. Keep them.

Hi All,

Maidend my Spit this weekend - Using a TT 91 FS. - fantastic - just like the real deal. Was quite windy but no problems and no sign of a tip stall. One landing without flaps and one with. My sugestion is that if you have a good head wind then just grease her in - no flaps - but in calm conditions I think flaps will be needed to slow her down. The colour scheme is very hard to see at a distance - so watch out!

Okay now I can die and go to heave - flown my Spitfire.

Congrats on your Spitfire maiden. Do you fly off of paved or grass runway? How did the retracts do? I can't wait to get mine!!

We fly off paved and the retracts were fine - I am sure that they will be fine on grass and I don't think it will nose over very easly as the weels are quite far forward.

Good luck with yours.

Hey, congrats on your Spit flight. I collapsed on the runway after my maiden flight. I also put invasion stripes on mine and she lights up in the sky!! Very easy to see!
