Got the wheel wells and the landing gear boxes glassed. I was also able to glass most of the wing main spar through the wheel well openings.

Woody i believe the R-3350 is an 18 cylinder engine, double nines.

On a side note i have seen both a 4360 and a 3350 run on test stands truly impressive.

Hey Richard,

This looks fantastic. I've got a Magnum 120FS in my hangar 9 and she flies like a dream.

She is standing on her feet. Looks like I need to add shim to the inner retract mounts to get the struts perpendicular to the ground. Right now they slant in a little. I haven't mounted the engine yet.

Finally got some free time to mount the engine. Had to use extra long 1.80 sized adjustable engine mount and 3/4" thick spacer in front of the firewall to bring the engine far enough forward so the prop would clear the front of the cowl (left picture). The right picture shows the cowl in place and the 3-blade Hamilton Standard flying prop bolted on. However, using a 3-blade prop on the F2G is like using a 3-blade prop on a P-47 Thunderbolt - it ain't right. I will need to order a 4-blade static display prop. I also need to take care of the unsightly front cowl opening.

Since I was not able to find a 7-cylinder dummy radial, I decided to use my poor man lazy way of reducing the front cowl opening again. The picture below shows a P&W R-4360 28-cylinder radial printed on photo paper and glued to a custom baffle using canopy glue (I hope the glue will hold up). The picture looks almost convincing and 3D. Next step: cut out the bottom cylinder and glue the engine baffle to the cowl.

Richard, WHERE did you get those great looking retracts? Much more realistic than the UGLY arssed "oleo's" that CJ thinks there selling. What an improvement.

Those are Sierra Precision retracts made for the TF Corsair and this plane. Sometimes you can find them on RCU Marketplace.

Richard I've looked for "Sierra Retracts" and nothing applies directly to a supplier or manufacturer?? More of a hit or miss type deal & are they made anymore? Thank you for the reply & picture, best I've seen yet!!

Here is Sierra Website: [link]http://www.sierragiant.com/[/link]

Either give them a call or send them an e-mail. They will take care of you. This is a fairly new product, and yes, Sierra still makes these.

hey Richard do those work for the H-9 p40 they look great and are they very heavy they look sturdy so that usually means they weigh allot. another question how long did it take you to go from trainer to war bird I know you have only been flying for a few years but you seem to have the knack. love the video's keep em coming looking to seeing this one also on video. bigtim, those Sierra retracts look sturdy but they are not heavy at all. They might even weigh less than a pair of CJ retracts. They might fit the H9 P-40, but give Sierra a call just to be sure.

It took me no time to go from a trainer to a warbird because my trainer was a Kyosho Spitfire. I then moved to a Kyosho Bf109e, ModelTech P-51, etc...

I like to mount the fuel tank on the CG in all my warbirds, and this plane is no exception. Had to make brackets out of balsa to hold the tank in place:

Below are two pics showing a GP 15 oz tank securely held in place on the CG:

Richard, many thanks for the Sierra site, reasonably priced for what ya get IMO. Do you find that YS finicky to tune? I'd worry a little about pullling fuel from the tank mounted that far back. YS probably pumped, excuse my ignorance. I'm jealous, NICE airplane! Pockets

Yes, YS is pumped. I wouldn't move the tank back if I'm not using a pumped engine. I find YS the easiest 4-stroke to tune, but that's just me. I had more problems tuning an inverted OS or Saito.

Made some more progress on the Corsair. Since I'm mounting the fuel tank back from the firewall, instead of routing the fuel lines through two holes in the firewall, I decided to use Fourmost Products Bulkhead fittings to avoid getting fuel seeping into the cabin. Also got the engine plumbed.

Got the retractable tail wheel hooked up and functioning. Here is a video showing the tail wheel in action: [link=http://www.warbirdobsession.com/h9_f2g_corsair/videos/tailwheel.wmv]Corsair Retractable Tail Wheel[/link]

Instead of using a retract servo to raise and lower the tail wheel, I can also use an air cylinder with 1" of piston travel since the tail wheel actuator arm has 1" of total travel. I can then tee the air lines for the tail wheel air cylinder into the air lines for the mains.

This is Robart #165 air cylinder with 1 inch of piston travel:

I might eventually go this route to eliminate the current draw from the retract servo.

GREAT PHOTOS..... what did you use as your balance point on this one??
I am playing with my CG still...
what is the rule.. on CG...the further forward towards the LE makes it more or less aerobatic or sensitive/???
Looking forward to the videos....

I set my CG at 4.5" (had to add an ounce of lead to the tail), and it flew pretty good. It's still a little pitch sensitive, so maybe I have too much throw on the elevator. Moving the CG further forward would make the plane less aerobatic and more stable at the expense of higher landing speed.
