Default Hangar 9 F2G-2 "Super Corsair"

A brief background history on the F2G Corsair:

Late in the war, Goodyear was approached by the Navy to build a high-performance version of the Corsair. Their reply was the F2G. This bubble-canopy version was to be built in two variants, the F2G-1, a land-based version with manually folding wings, and the F2G-2, a carrier version with hydraulically folding wings and arresting hook. Powered by the Pratt & Whitney R-4360-4 Wasp Major engine rated at 3000 HP, the F2G possessed a rate of climb that permitted it to reach 30,000 feet in only 4 minutes. Armament was identical to that of the F4U-1D/FG-1D. Including the "X" models, 18 F2G's were completed and flown by Goodyear before the contracts were cut back and the war was over.

The F2G-2 was meant to be the answer to the kamikaze menace but the war came to a close before it got into full production. Only 5 of the F2G-2's were built.

Attached is a picture of the P&W R-4360-4 Wasp Major engine. Note that the early models of the R-4360 Wasp Major developed 3000 hp, but the final models delivered 4300 hp.

Here are some pictures of a fine F2G-2 built by Bernhard Schrock from a 1:48 scale Tamiya plastic kit:

Default RE: H9 F2G-2 "Super Corsair"

I recently picked up a F2G-2 Super Corsair from Dave Galvin of Seattle. Dave took the H9 Corsair and expertly modified it into the F2G-2. Dave moved the elevator and rudder servos to the inside, used pull-pull on the rudder, and installed a retractable tailwheel. I believe he used a Sig bubble canopy. He also moved the firewall back around an inch or so to accomodate the longer and more powerful 3000 HP engine.

that is truely a one-of-kind plane there. That would be a neat little bashing project. Did he ever fly the plane?

I plan to install Sierra pneumatic rotating retracts and use a YS 110 for power. First thing first: reinforce the wing spar at the gull bends. I used 2 oz glass cloth and 45-minute epoxy to glass the wing spar on both sides of each wheel well. I will glass both wheel wells after the retract mounts are glued in. More to come.

He tried to fly it one day but had problems with his inverted Revolution 100 2-stroke engine. As a result, the plane never got off the ground.

By the way, the airfoiled tail feathers are from a Top Flite Corsair kit, with internal control linkages.

I want that engine too. That is a beast. Unfortunately, I don't think anybody makes a dummy radial of that engine, so I might need to get creative.

That's a 28-cylinder air-cooled four-row radial engine with seven cylinders per row: [link]http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/engines/eng34a.htm[/link]

Today I modified the factory retract mounts for the Sierra air retracts, which fit pretty good. I plan to enlarge the wheel wells a little bit and use either 3 3/4" or 4" diameter main wheels. I'm still debating on whether or not to keep the wheel wells circular or cut them to scale shape, which is square.

Actually Richard, the P & W "Corncob" R4360 (Wasp Major) engine never developed more than 3500 HP in its final development. Late models did did gain fuel injection.

The Wasp Major, besides being used in the F2G-2, was also used in the Boeing KC97 and Stratocruiser, Boeing B50, the Martin Mars Flying Boat (2 still flying, up in BC Canada) Convair B36, Fairchild C119C " Flying Box Car", Douglas C74 and C124, the Martin P4M Mercator and the French made SNCASE Armagnac. The Northrop XB 35 Flying Wing also used early versions of the Wasp Major.

Later versions of the Curtiss-Wright R3350 14 cylinder Turbo Compound engine (Lockheed WV2, C121C, Super Constellation, Starliner and also the P2V Neptune, Fairchild C119F, Douglas A1 Skyraider and Douglas DC7 series) developed up to 3,700 HP and also beat the Wasp Major in weight.

The biggest user of both types was the USAF.

Both were very complicated engines, but marvellous to watch in action. We will never see their like again.

The Wright 3350's and P&W 4360's were the zenith of radial engine cevelopment. In service it took an average of 10 to 12 hours of maintenance for every hour in the air! the 3350 was famous for shedding Power Recovery Turbine (PRT) parts.

Today I cut out four maple blocks to serve as retract mounts, two blocks per side (I haven't epoxied them in yet):

Got the maple retract blocks epoxied in with 30-minute epoxy and Sierra retracts bolted in place. Wheels are Robart 3 3/4" diameter diamond tread.
