JDM FW190 "Black 3"
Well, I've finally started up my first big warbird project since the SBD and thought it was about time to get a thread started here on it. I'm building the Jack Devine Models 1/5 scale Focke Wulfe 190. I'm doing the A7 variant based on "Black 3" (W.Nr. 430352)which was an A-7 of 2./JG 1 from Dortmund in Jan 1944. Pilot unknown.
Here's what I started with...
Tailfeathers capped and sheeted...
Fuselage sheeting...
Of course, as with the SBD, I'm doing a complete build site, step by step, start to finish.
Here's the new location of the SBD "41 Sniper" build site: [link]http://www.tompierce.net/SBD[/link]
And here's the link for the new FW190 "Black 3" site: [link]http://www.tompierce.net/190/index.htm[/link]

RE: JDM FW190 "Black 3"
Well I got my engine in this week. Went with one of the G62 EI Conversions from RC Ignitions.com, which came highly recommended by Jack Devine. Now I can see why, boy it's a real sweetie!
Weighs 4lbs 3oz as pictured above so that's about 6oz lighter than stock. I plan to go with the Bennett muffler, might see if I can pick one up at the Toledo show this weekend.
I have put together an article covering my findings on this engine so far and will continue to add to it as I install, run and eventually review it. You can check out my article and more pics here...

Tom,
I read every page of 41 Sniper's build site; I got a lot of ideas for my scale projects. I particulary liked reading about the glassing/finishing methods you used, as I'm interested in the Polycrylic more than epoxy. The thingI love most about scale is recreating all the little details, and 41 Sniper had it in spades! That cockpit was/is a work of art; too bad about the maiden! Glad to see you started a thread here, I've been checking Black 3's page for a new page update. Keep up the excellent work, cant wait to see how the 190 turns out!

Wow Richard, those are beautiful pics! Thanks for the motivation! He did a fantastic job on that 190, it's a beautiful scheme.

Looks like a great kit! have fun with the build. I purchased a Sis-T 1/5 FW190-A8 a imported German Kit distributed by DJearotech. I need to start building that next but I'm tring to finish my Hangar-9 P-47-150 arf first. I've always like the body lines and short nose of the wulf, When it comes to a FW190 it's got to be the A/F versions I don't care for the D9 dora's. Good luck with the build!!!

Thanks Lemon,
I almost picked up one of those P47's myself... nice ARF. I agree the A/F's are real sweethearts. That SisT kit is a piece of art, you'll love it.

Tom Glad to see you back. I am building a Holman FW with Lenney's retracts also. I am at the primer stage. Your weathering on your SBD just blew me away. My understanding is the FW is a super flying bird .
I have one of Jacks P47 that I plan on doing next year. Keep us posted. Rich

As for weight, I haven't seen one come in under 18lbs. More like an 18-22lb plane. Some have been even heavier depending on how you build. I'm shooting for 20-22lbs realistically with the G62.

RE: JDM FW190 "Black 3"
Fell behind in keeping this thread updated, so here's the latest. Shindin retracts came in, been working on them and the wing. The quality of the retracts is awesome, what a magnificent piece of workmanship these things are. I got the optional gear door standoffs/brackets and scissors too. I decided to go with the fixed tailwheel gear.
Lenny can also cut the band details in the main struts if you like, but I decided I wanted to add all the detailing myself like I did on my SBD. I'll be putting up a complete step-by-step installation and detailing article on my 190 site when I get these done.
Also have a bit of work done on the wing, I should be able to get the sheeting done tomorrow. Here are the new pages on my site that cover what's done so far in more detail (including review pages on the Shindin gear and Williams Bros wheels)...

Thanks Richard. BTW, I love your web site... that's an awesome collection of pics and vids of some fantastic planes! [sm=thumbup.gif]
I especially like the Vailly 190... really motivated me since it looks almost exactly like mine will (except a little bigger than mine )
I hope mine flies as nice as that one does too... I'm pretty confident it will. The JDM kit is known for its good flying characteristics.

RE: JDM FW190 "Black 3"
Hi guys, got some more progress done on the 190. Finally, primary construction of the airframe is basically complete! All cap stripping and sheeting is now done, so it's time to move on to actually putting all these components together. Here are a few pics of recent progress, but I have my step-by-step pages all put together on the "Black 3 web site" beginning here...

RE: JDM FW190 "Black 3"
Next major milestone passed, the wing is mounted.
First I decided to go back and add a small wing spar for extra strength. This thing feels like you could stand on it now!
Next is aligning and mounting the wing. It's perfectly square and level. Incidence is spot on. Lastly was installing the fixed Shindin tail gear. Works very well and solid as a rock. Did a slight mod to the gear, just rounded the edges a little to look even more scale.
That's it for now. Probably finish up the firewall or start on the wing fairing next.

Well, another step out of the way, the wing fairing and saddle are done. I built it all up "hollow" to keep it simple and light. I surfaced the entire saddle and underside of the fairing with 1/32" aircraft ply. Everything still fits good and incidence is still dead nuts.
Here are just a few pics from my build site, detailed step-by-step can be found here...

Tom,
Wow, that is some really beautiful wood work you have done there!
Is the fuselage foam that is covered with balsa sheeting and then hollowed out? I take it that the servo extensions in the wing can never be replaced, right? It looks like they sit in a trough under the balsa sheeting.
Thanks for sharing,
-Ed
