A broken in Moki spinning a 20 inch prop @ 7500-8000 rpm is almost impossible to beat, power to weight. Nothing spins that prop faster and is that light.
They idle perfect, transition nice, oh and did I mention they are light.

I'LL BET YOUR BIRD IS FLYING FASTER THAN YOU THINK. ONE COULD "GUESS" ANY SPEED. WHAT IS A 10" PITCH PROP? ASSUMING YOU'VE PLACED THE ENGINE ON THE ENGINE THRUSTLINE ON THE DRAWING, IT LOOKS LIKE THE CARB WILL BE HITTING THE FUEL TANK. YOU DIDN'T MENTION WHAT PLANE YOUR G-62/SAME PROP COMBO WAS ON........

Vkerster,
I have a TF GS P-51B with a G62 turning a APC 22-10 prop. (1st 2 photos). I'm also working on a 2nd Mustang using a 3W50. True, you can't use the stock fuel set-up with the rear mounted carb. I'm using a 16 oz sullivan v type boat tank that will lie under the carb/intake. It will have less endurance than average, but I don't tend towards extended flights. If necessary I can add a header tank for increased capacity/endurance.
The pitch of a prop is the distance it will travel per revolution assuming no slippage. A 10" pitch prop ( the 10 in 22X10) means the plane in theory will travel 10" forward for each revolution of the prop. At 7500 rpm you get 75000 inches/minute = 4,500,000 inches/hour or 71.022727 miles per hour. Now no propeller is 100% effecient, and there is also aerodynamic drag, which work to reduce the actual speed. On the other hand since you can only measure rpm on the ground where the prop has to move still air, it will tend to "unload" and turn faster since it is already moving through the air, and doesn't have to work as hard. So to an extent the two forces tend to cancel each other out somewhat and the actual top speed in horizontal flight is probably in the 70-80 mph range.

SCALEBIRDMAN,NICE P-51B, YOU DON'T SEE NEAR AS MANY 'B' MODELS AS 'D' MODELS. LOOKS LIKE YOU'VE INSTALLED A HUB EXTENSION ON YOUR G-62. A 16 0Z. TANK WILL STILL GIVE YOU AT LEAST 10 MIN. OF FLYING TIME. APPREICATE THE FORMULA, HOWEVER SOMETIMES THE RESULT OF THE FORMULA DOESN'T NESSASSARLY REFLECT THE END RESULT OF THE EXPERIMENT. YOU DIDN'T MENTION IF YOU'VE EVER HAD A RADAR GUN ON YOUR BIRD............

Scalebirdman; does the G-62 have a prop hub extension to make that all fit so nice?. Thanks, Mikel-T

The other half of the solution is a custom inverted pitts muffler that keeps the exhaust in the cowl.

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
Hi guys, I just bought the Top Flite Giant Scale P-51 ARF off ebay the other day and already started building. I have not yet bought an engine for it, so what engine would you all recommend getting for someone that isnt very experienced in building these and would like something easy to put in? Also what do you guys think of the Hitec Eclipse FM 7 channel radio for this plane? Thanks in advance!

Is the Moki better then the 3W50? The 3W50 looks like its pretty easy to install, and fits great with very little cowl hacking.

Is the Moki better.... No, not better, but easier to install, and about 1/2 the price of the 3W. You have to modify the firewall to mount the 3W50, you will have to maintain a seperate battery pack for the ignition. The Moki on the other hand just bolts up to the firewall. You will also have to come up with a muffler, or some sort of exhaust system for the 3W; such as Keleko creations scale system, while there are more choices for off the shelf mufflers for the Moki, though finding one that fits in the cowl may be tough. The 3W does produce more power than the Moki, from 10 to 25% depending on who you ask. IMHO closer to the 25% end, and the 3W won't slober castor oil all over the bottom of the plane like the glow motor. The 3W will run on less fuel than the Moki, and the fuel is $3/gal vs $20. Pro's and cons for each. I'd say the choice comes down to whether you prefer glow or gas.

There are other gas engine choices that won't set you back as much either with almost the same power. The Fuji 43 EI, or G45 are both good choices. The Fuji 43 EI 2 comes with a muffler that will fit in the cowl and is under 400.00 right now through Tower or your LHS.

How easy are those 2 engines to install? I'm still having real tough time deciding what engine to get. I don't think I want to get the engine that was recommended for the plane, the US 41. That specific engine seems alittle underpowered for the plane.

Mounting these engines or most engines for that matter will take some improvising. You will will have to determine the mounting position on the firewall, drill holes, mount the engine, modify the cowl for air and muffler exit as well as mount ignition module and battery if it's an E version.
As mentioned in an earlier post, the Moki 210 would probably be the easiest and simplest install.

RE: What engine did you put in your Top Flite giant P-51?
Well I ended up going with the recommended engine, the US 41. Probably best I go with the small engine to begin with anyways since im only use to flying my Giant Scale J-3 cub and a few other slow planes. Also I couldn't pass up the deal I got it for, $150 new, so thanks for the help guys. I'll post up some pictures of the plane in a few hours, everythings built just need to drop in the engine, put on the decals, and do a few other things. What I do need though is a pilot! Anyone know where i can get a good pilot for the plane? Thanks!

Has anyone used the Keleo muffler? With which engine? I haven't picked my engine yet but would like to use the scale muffler.

I agree with scalebirdman I had a US 41 on my jug and wondered why she would stall once and a while. It was the 41 on my P-51 I'm going with a 3W42. And on my CE I had a 41 on it too now I'm going to put a G 45 on it. Keep the speed up until you get to the landing zone then chop throttle.

Hello fellas! I too just got the TF ARF p-51 giant scale off ebay the other day. I am interested in putting in the G-62 but what would I need to install this engine? Do i need a custom mount for example, or does everything that i need already come with the plane and engine?

I just got my P51 done today. It has a G62 installed with a bennet cup mount and a prop hub spacer. The only hacking was for the carb and the spark plug cap.
