Yup: pretty good looking Corsair you have there, BarracudaHockey.
And it is too bad that you live so far from us in the great white north: your Big Hog would certainly be MOST welcome at all warbird events in our area (when the snow melts).

Hi everyone,

I am finished with my Piper Super Cub build and am sending it off to be covered. Now it's time to start on the Corsair. I have to clean up my shop and by Monday I will be started. I thought I would have started before now but you know how things seem to take longer than anticipated. I added a couple mod's at the last minute on the Cub for scale appearences. I'll start posting pictures as soon as I can get some of it done.

Hello,

I have a question about engines. I have a Magnum 1.20 4-stroke and a Super Tigre .75 2-stroke. With the .75 and the in cowl muffler the engine would be completely concealed. Thats the pro and for the con it swings a smaller prop which is off scale a lot. The 1.20 is going to have the valve covers sticking out the bottom of the cowl and I'm not sure on what I'm going to do with the muffler. The 1.20 swings a 16" prop versus the .75's 13" prop. This will look much better. Also I am glassing the plane so it will weigh more and maybe it will need the 1.20. My question is which would you use and why? Also the engines will be inverted if that makes any difference in your reply. Thank you in advance for your feedback. Also I took longer to finish the Cub than I wanted to and I will start on the Corsair Friday.

Thanks again,

Gibbs

Gibbs,
Go with the Magnum. The sound of the 4 stroke is worth the price of admission IMHO. The larger prop is closer to scale as you noted. Also just because your glassing that dosen't mean your locked in to building a brick. It can be done well and light.

I'm Ready!,

I finished the Cub and started to get my new table ready for the build. I will inventory and label parts first so it might take a day or so before I start acually building. Here are some pictures of my new table with the Elmers foam board on it. These boards are great for holding pins.

Hey everyone,

I am doing an inventory of the fuselage die cut parts and when I got to sheet number CRS6F07 it lists 6 parts 8, 8B,9B,ADR, and Tray. There isn't any part 8 on that sheet of plywood. Am I missing something or is this the way it's suppose to be? Is it on another plywood sheet? It only says that there is one of these sheets per kit.[]

Help please,

Gibbs

cimara,

I called Top Flite this morning and on the sheet I mentioned in my earlier post it said that there is a part 8 on it. They told me that was a mistake and there should only be 5 parts on that sheet. So I do have all the parts. I do have the number 8 part you were talking about although. Also I had some cracked ribs and they are going to send me out the sheets I need. I was going to glue them but she said don't we will send them for free. I like them already.

Thanks,

Gibbs

To All,

I have been talking about getting started on this build long enough. I worked all afternoon on the stabalizer and can now say it is done. Here are some pictures. Any critisisim or other comments are welcome. I would like any input you may have to better this Corsair. I have decided to put the Magnum 1.20 4-stroke in it also for the bigger prop and performance. I will be glassing this so it might weigh close to that 13 to 14 lbs. I hope not but we shall see. I am using titebond for everything except the epoxy areas. Has anyone got any comments on that?

Thanks,

Gibbs

Gibbs,
Tightbond is fine but slow. If your parts fit is spot on wicking thin CA into the joint is fast and as strong. As I said before you should come in between 10 and 11 lbs if your really at 13 to 14 you have overbuilt or used waaaaay too much epoxy. Think light and look for ways to build light.

Rocketman612,

I was just guessing on the weight to get replies and good feedback. I am building slow and wiping any excess glue out after the part is installed. No big gobs of glue anywhere. I think is will maybe weigh 12 lbs with my Doc Miller pilot in it and the Magnum 1.20 4-stroke. Here's a couple almost finished pictures of the stabazier. I have it glazed with thin putty to fill any voids and pin holes. I will sand it smooth later. Most of the putty will be gone.

Hi,

I didn't have much time to work on my build today so all I got done was the fin. Hope to get the elevators done tomorrow. Here are some pictures as I built the fin. I have that mod picture of CorsairJocks to go by for the fin and rudder. I will look up if he had any elevator mods and do them if he did.

Today,

I finish sanded the stabalizer and fin and started on the elevators. I didn't get much done because the sandman came and put me to sleep for about 2 hours. I needed that so I didn't care. I got my pilot today and got the elevators half done. I hope to finish the elevators tomorrow and get started on the rudder. I have to make modification on it so it might take a day or two. Here is todays work. I hope to be onto the wing by Sunday.

Hello,

I am building this Corsair for my son and he wants to make it a Marine Aircraft. I had to order all the decals from Callie Graphic's because the ones that came with the kit wouldn't show up on this scheme. I'm going with gloss instead of flat. I told my son that it was flat but he said it's going to be his plane so it's going to be gloss. Anyway I think it will look great even gloss. I ordered an American Eagles head Decal for the front behind the cowling as he also requested. I don't know if this will still be scale but he wins. Where I fly nobody will be the wiser.

Back at it,

I worked on the elevators and got them all finished except for the final sanding of the ribs. I always wait until the plane is ready to be put together to sand anything that may get dinged up. I used to sand and then had to putty dings all the time. This is the first build that I have all the parts inventoried and in seperate boxes. When the part is complete I put it back in the box for safe keeping until I need it. I also briefly started on the rudder. I'll work on that more tomorrow. My son and I went to see Flyboys when it came out and loved it. Mom bought him the DVD yesterday and he wants me to watch it with him. So I am off to the TV. Here are a couple pictures.

Ist Mod's,

Today I built the rudder and beefed it up quite a bit on the top so if it noses over it will not be damaged. I also made the trim tabs for the bottom rear of the rudder. There is a lot of extra weight so I also drilled three lighting holes 5/8" in diameter. The rear top of the rudder was not real scale so I changed that so it was true scale. It was way to blunt and needed trimming. Well as close as I can get it from the books and 3 view pictures. Here are todays progress. Next I start the wing. The American Eagle will be where positioned on the fuselage in the picture.

How about some feedback,

I have been posting and posting and only a few out of over 1,000 looks have responded. I was hoping for some sort of feedback, good or bad. Today I worked on cleaning up after the tail feather builds. I taped the plan back together and put it aside until it's time for the fueselage. I layed out the wing plans and covered it with plan protector. This is the first time I've used it and it is great. Wax paper is junk compared to this product. I only was able to sand and epoxy the 3 main spar pieces together today. I will let it sit overnight and then start on the center section ribs tomorrow.

I'm keeping an eye on your work, so don't feel that you are out there by yourself. It looks like you are mostly building according to plan and doing a nice job of it, so I really haven't had much to offer up to this point. Keep the faith!

Hey,

Your alive. I have been making changes by beefing things up and changing the shape of the rudder to look scale. I cut the notches in the main spar for the retracts and I have Century Jet's retracts for it. I have to drill a 5/8" hole above the slot in the main spar and doublers for the air cylinder to pass through. Did anyone use Century Jet retracts and was there any problem with strength with the additional hole in the spar and doublers? If you have let me know one way or the other please.

Thanks,

I used the CJ retracts with no problem. The retracts come with good instructions. I added a doubler and it's solid. The retract arc isn't as much as the robart. It's a tradeoff between having the wheel set deeper in the wing or having the axel out even with the leading edge of the wing (with the fuse parallel to the ground) so when you roll out and land you have less chance of a nose over. If your doing doors on the gear you will want them retracting deeper.

Roketman612,

I cut the notches in the spar according to the depth of the doubler. Is this enough or do I need to go deeper? Let me know so I can drill the hole and start on the ribs. Do I need to drill holes for the air lines in the main spar and if so where? Do you have a picture of your setup. Here are a couple pic's of my main spar so far with the hole for the air cylinder marked in red.

Thanks for your help,

Gibbs
