Default Hellcat Retracts

I have started building the Jerry Bates 80" Hellcat. I'm wondering which set of retracts to get for it...Century Jet ($375 includes the all the support stuff), or Sierra Giants ($460 for the retracts, plus $75 for all the other stuff I will need). You get what you pay for, and I have heard the Sierra stuff is really nice...but is it worth it? Anyone have experience with both of these manufacturer's? I fly off grass, and this will be my first warbird with retracts.

Amen to that! I have a "few" pairs of Darrels gear and
air valves, all GREAT stuff!

I agree with Chad and Todd. No comparison. Go with Darrell's gear. They are absolutely the best! I have his P-47, Tempest and FW190 gear. They are all stunning.

chevelledude13:

Sierra. Sierra. Sierra!

They would be a bargain at twice the price of CJM. Especially if you fly off grass like I do.

Not only do I have experience with both manufacturers, but I have experience with both manufacturers' gear on the same planes. I have (let me count) FIVE planes with Sierra gear now, and my only regret is he doesn't make gear to fit my others.

And, NO, I'm not family.

Great Project!

Pictures?

I dont have any seirra's, but I cant think of anything worse than a plane with unreliable retracts. Especially rotators. Just takes all the fun out of it. Concesus seems clear!

Another vote for the Sierra Precision retracts. Everything they make is absolutely reliable and a real work of art. I have their retracts for the Douglas Skyray (the mains rotate 90 degrees) and their .60 size version Hellcat 90 degree rotating gear. Worth every cent.

I just made a Paypal payment to Darrell at Siearra Giants for a set of his retracts. Thank you very much to all of you guys...it is nice to have a bit of research done before you make a purchase like this.

SIERRA-Not sure how that other company continues to stay in the retract business, after seeing the workmanship (or lack thereof) on more than one set of gear.
