Wow, fantastic R101. Very nice work indeed!
Mine weighs @ exactly 7 lbs. without engine and cowling, so we're right in the same ballpark.
I see you have your 'N' and cabane struts done. Did you carefully check the incidence levels? Initially I did not, as instructed at the beginning of the manual - BIG mistake.
I purchased two incidence meters (laser and needle-type) and spent over 20 hours with the alignments, fabricating new struts and basically confirming everything is true.
With the fuselage absolutely level, my initial readings were 3 degrees positive on the lower and 3.5 on the upper. Spec's call for 0 degrees lower and 1.5 - 2 degrees upper. In addition, the mounting deck for the horizontal platform measured 1 degree Negative!
So, I literally discarded the N-struts and built new ones with 5/32" music wire and brass tangs. To correct the cabanes, I simply shimmed them with ply - 1/8" aft and 1/32" fwd.
The fuselage required 1/8" removed from the rear saddle.
The horizontal stab deck required a tapered 1/8" shim (fwd.) to give me exactly 1.75 degrees of positive incidence on the H-stab. Measurements are now exactly as plans indicate, except for the positive incidence in the H-stab.
So, how much time do you have invested? What is your target weight with the electric power system? I'm shooting for 15.5-16 lbs. with that Saito, SolarTex, latex paint.
This week, I'll be cutting the ailerons out, hinging and installing the wing servo trays.

Nick,
Are you going to add a spreader bar between the wheels? I originally didn't on my BUSA. But, after many landings the wheels spread further and further apart. I added the spreader bar and it stiffened up the gear alot.
I am working on a Proctor 28 now and they have a spreader bar. Just something to consider.
That Saito radial will surely sound sweet. Good luck with the rest of the build.

I have not yet checked the incidences and should have done so - will report back the results.
I assumed (naively?) that the kit build would take care of the incidences.
Started the kit in February and found it an easy enough build.
I noticed the lack of a spreader bar and will probably add one now, as the U/C is bound to spread with my landing skills.
I am hoping for a weight around the 12 lb mark
The tail bracing wires seem a bit OTT, so I intend using kevlar thread in place of the wires and quick links.
Using closed loop control on the rudder

Twelve pounds is a bit conservative. Maybe if AAA contest balsa was substituted for the kit wood, which I found was heavier than I'm used too. Covering?
You will likely need nose weight; however placing those batteries up front will certainly help.

I'll need to do some tests with the motor before flying.
I used balsa for the fuselage decking instead of the ply supplied to save weight and because I was having difficulty trying to shape and bend the ply.
Covering in Polyester (Polyspan?) will save a bit as well hopefully.

Great surprise! Please provide all information, including CG location, control throws, total weight (RTF) and overall flying characteristics.
I'm awaiting rib stitching before I can cover. Ordered the roundel stencils for painting; just didn't feel comfortable with applied decals or graphics over the stitching and open-bay design.

The weight for the first flight was under 12 lbs.
The CG was about 3/16 in front of the plan mark, and I set the control throws as per instructions and they seemed just about right.
The model flies great with no apparent vices - just like a big trainer, although I just flew it around and have not yet tried any aerobatics.
I'll now need to think about painting and finishing it.

I received my roundel stencils from Gary last week; they look great.
I'm about one week out from completing the covering which is taking longer due to the rib-stitching.

Very nice - how much does she weigh?
Poasted a video of mine flying here (I need to do something about the background noise on the video !!)
