Default Ziroli Dauntless Project

Thanks for the compliment! I love this hobby and I am so blessed to be able to be involved in what I love as a way to make a living, too! Joe Huntley is about to be building a Ziroli 190 for me that I cut, but I digress. That isnt Dauntless related.

If you are interested here is the paint scheme I have chosen:

TMoth,

Lookin' awesome! Is that the SBD-3? The cowl louvers look like the SBD3 louvers instead of the SBD-5 louver.

How'd you do your fairings on the bottom of the wing? Are they aftermarket or hand-made?

Are you going to go with a closed, one-piece canopy or cut it up into an open canopy? I'm going to cut mine up since I'm doing a full cockpit and full-body crew.

Lookin' great, keep us informed!

Thanks,

Neo

NEO,
Yes, It's an SBD-3. The louvers are a little different and it has the scoop on top of the cowl. I carved the fairings from hard balsa and finished the bigger ones with glass cloth. I'm going to cut up the canopy and have them in the open position too, which means I have to do some cockpit detailing. There's so much in there it's mind-boggling. I'll probably start flying it before I do all that.

Don't forget. The MAPS Museum airshow in Akron is supposed to have an SBD-5 there. It'll probably fly too.

Laser,

Thanks, it get's lotsa looks at the field... especially when hovering and them eyes are starin' at ya! You can see more pics of it at my Hangar 37 site ( http://www.renderwurx.com/rc ).

TMoth,

Wow, nice job on those fairings! I thought ya bought 'em. Yeah, that cockpit's a doozy! That will be the last thing I do too. But, I'll have to get the canopy worked out soon.

I thought that might be the SBD-3 cowl. Don't worry, I'll be there in Akron. Hey if you're going, I'd love to hook up with you and say hey!

I want to be around that Dauntless when it starts up. Last year I missed it starting up and taxiing because we were outside the gate having lunch!

I'm gonna try to do the same... never been there, so don't know what kind of access you have to the plane.

You've seen my ugly mug in pics on the web, so keep an eye out for me!

You can crawl under and around it if you want, but I think they'd frown upon you climbing in.

Great work ! I couldn`t help noticing the Fokker DR1 behind it. It looked awsome. DO you have any pictures of that one ? I`m building one 1/4 scale kit from Flair.

Actually those are Fieseler Storch wings. There's a couple of pics of it if you push the gallery button below this message.
I did finish a BUSA DR1 before I started the Dauntless. It's got a Homelite 33cc in it that runs great. The DR1 hasn't been flown yet.

A couple more pictures of the Ziroli Dauntless. One outer wing panel was started and fitted to the center section. It lined up almost perfect to the center section with only a little trimming of the wing tube holes...more testimony to Nick Ziroli's design skills.

Here's another view. Plenty of washout in the wing. The plane should be a very stable flyer.

Default The dreaded "letterbox" slots

I thought making the built-in wing slots was going to be a real hassle with all the lttle riblets and parts, but they fit into place nicely and it wasn't too difficult at all.
Also, instead of trying to bend the spar ends down to the tips, I made 1/4 balsa pieces with the curve in it.

One wing almost finished. I still have to finish the ailerons. The plans call for model-type barndoor hinges so I'm going to modify them to look more scale-like. Not sure yet how I'm going to do that. For the dive brakes and flaps I laminated a layer of .031 phenolic board with 1/32 ply (instead of a single piece of 1/32 ply that's called for on the plan) in hopes of eliminating any warpage. The wing is becoming huge!

Tmoth,

Lookin' great! You're killin' me here, now I gotta get started on my wing! I took a break again after finishing the radial dummy so I could get some updates on the H37 site and work on another little slope glider kit I picked up for windy days.

So will that wing breakdown with wing tubes, or is it all one piece when finished? Mine will be one piece, but it's only 85" instead of 100 (I think yours is 100).

How's it going with the retracts? Getting them mounted up too?

NEO,
I don't mean to kill you. I want you to finish your Dauntless so I can ogle it at Toledo next year! You've also done a great job on your website. You're inspiring me to do a better job on my plane.

The wings are 3 piece with tubes, which is a new experience for me. The outer section pops into place nicely and it feels pretty strong but I would hate to have something vibrate loose, so I think I'll add a couple of things to lock it up tight, not sure what yet.

The retracts were fitted a while ago. I posted a couple of pictures near the beginning of this thread.

Tmoth,

Thanks for the kind words. I plan to see yours at Toledo too! Maybe we can set them together and have them play "Dueling Banjos" for theme music. '-)

Sorry about the brain fart on you retract pics, I forgot they were there. Did you find any wheels in Toledo? I've got the Dubro 5" wheels for mine (plastic spoked rims) and plan to come up with some sort of bash job that will simulate the dome/saucer hub caps. We'll see.

NEO.
I don't think mine is going to be of Toledo caliber, but i'm sure yours will be. I'm also hoping to have it flying before the end of the season. I may put off any cockpit detailing until next winter.

I ended up getting the Dubro treaded light wheels. I'll make some sort of wheel covers too.

A couple new pictures of the Dauntless. Both wing outer panels built and plane is assembled for the first time. Pictures don't show it but the plane is huge!

Rear view. The ailerons just need to be finished and hinged, then it's on to the flaps and more hole drilling.

Hi,
I just got back from the Joe Nall and there was a SBD there that was just great. It was well weathered and flew perfectly. I wish you could have seen that one for inspiration. I think I took a pic of it, but need to download the pics to see first.

barnyard,
I flew one built from the old Herb Hall plans for years and it flew very solid, but after seeing Greg Hahn's SBD from Ziroli's plans I knew I had to built one. It's so much more accurate in outline than my old one.
