You can spray the flat clear LutreKote directly on the Ultracote and it will stick nicely and is fuel proof. Just scuff the finish lightly with some steel wool or scotch brite pad.

Be sure to try it on something else first... or why not just use the Lustrekote flat???

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
My first post on here. I am building the Hanger 9 B25 and am at the engine part. I am a Saito nut and was going to put Saito 62s on the plane. I am also a semi-scale nut and do not like the look of the engine hanging out the side of the cowl.
I have now decided on a pair of OS 46 AX's. I study several posts on here with these engines and the Slimline Pitts Q series mufflers. This would give me both the power and look I would like, giving up my lovely Saito sound.
I understand that this muffler might rob a little power from the engine and am now wondering if I have made a bad choice? I still do not want to butcher the cowls any more than I need to.
I would greatly appreciate any knowledgable commets about both this muffler and engine.
Thanks

I would think, that since this plane was designed to fly on .36 engines (that at one time were supplied with the kit) that .46 engines, would be fine. Some folks have reported that the .36s were not enough, others said they were fine, so an increase in power should be good.

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
Does anybody have any knowledge or experience with the Slimline Pitts Q series mufflers, and especially in conjunction with the OS 46 AX? Does it take away from the power and make it harder to tune?
Thank You

I need some input gentleman. I'm getting ready to install my motors and I've elected to go with two Saito 56's. Problem is I (for some unknown reason) thought they would fit inside the cowl, which they do not. I'm considering changing the mount to inverted as the head sticking out the bottom won't be as noticeable. Anyone have any input. Go for it, or do I just let the heads stick out the sides and run them sideways? Here's a picture (sorry for quality...cell phone picture)

Knew you'd come through for me CRG. Great point also. I need to ensure my carb and fuel tank are about level right? Very good point. I figured (hoped) I'd get a response from you. Thanks again.

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
A couple of things about the Saito engines. I have .62's in mine. I don't know if all these will apply to you with the .56's but I think they will.
I had to turn the carb around.
I had to move the engine forward in order to have clearance for the throttle arm to have sufficient clearance to work properly.
I had to use a flexible steel cable for the throttle linkage. I think it was the dubro flexcable for the throttle.
I had to move the cowling forward to make it look better. Since I moved the engine forward, I thought it looked tons better by moving the cowl forward. That way the rocker arm covers weren't coming out of the front of the cowl, just the side.
I also used a flexible exhaust pipe to give a semi scale look to it.
With the extra weight of the saitos and moving them forward, I had to move the placement of the batteries from the nose to in the wing section.
All said and done, she looks good and flies great.
I wouldn't turn it upside-down unless you were going to use a glow plug driver. (Take this for what it is worth. I have never tried an inverted engine, and I don't have any experience with them. I just am scared of a flameout. That fear may or may not be warranted)

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
Some great points Ken. I think you mentioned these same points to me one other time. With the uncertainty of the fuel tank height, having to move the motor mounts and thought of flameout, I'll just have them stick out a bit. I already rotated the carb, but will probably stick to the factory muffler. However, I think one of you guys sent me the link for the flexible so I might check it out. I think I'm going to run twin glow for assurance and ease of use. I've seen some horror strories of one engine dying on twins. While I understand why I happended and what not to do, I think I'll do what I can t eliminate possibilities. I jus got my Robart's finished up today. First set of pneumatic retracts I've installed. They work great. Thanks for all the input.

Shane,
Sorry man. Lost track of my previous posts. I think they look fine as they are in my bird, but as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think she'll look fine either way.

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
Okay guys.....thanks for the input. I have decided side mount, even thought I agree that they should run fine inverted from experience. Here's my next dilemma I need experienced builders input on.
What if I moved the engine rail mounts to the backside of the engine mount rails. This would almost keep the engine inside of the cowling. I've wanted to do this before....what are the pros and cons if I can make it work? Much appreciated!! A couple pics below....

Wouldn't that move the thrustline off center in the cowlings? Cons are it would look weird. You might also have a small thrust issue, though I don't you'd even notice a half inch or so like that.

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
...maybe, just maybe I should think some of this through before posting just because I know I'll get a quick answer!!!
You're right, I wondered about the thrust line, and to be honest, didn't even think about the fact it changes the center for the cowling which would definitely look weird. I'm done with this....out the side it is.
thanks for the response.

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
Shane,
One more thing. Keep in mind that one of the firewalls has a much higher side-thrust built into it. I believe it is the right one, but I am not 100% sure. So it is important to use the templates (Right and Left) on the correct nacelle or you will end up with the prop shaft not centered in the cowl. They don't do a real good job in the manual at spelling that out. So one of the engine mounts needs to be more to one side then the other .

RE: New Hangar 9 B-25
HUGE! LOL. Thanks for the pics, Charles. Now, once again, I am confused. I was sent on side mount, but talked to my buddy who works at my LHS and has been doing this for a long time, he said "I'd go inverted, with onboard glow". I tend to agree, I'd rather have the heads out the bottom. Now, with that said, your pics have confused me again as they don't stick out near as far as I thought they would. Geez!!!!!!
Have you flown her yet with this set up? How did she fly?
