240 mph (209 kts) isn't all that fast for a century series fighter approach speed. As I remember, the final approach speed for the F-101 Voodoo was in the 180 to 210 kts. range depending on fuel on board and model. Actual touch down speed would have been 20 knots less. A friend of mine who flew the F-100 C, said he was bummed that he had to land faster than the 104. They had boundary layer controls and his C model didn't even have flaps!

I think the rep as a dangerous aircraft to fly had more to do with the Germans trying to make a ground attack platform out of a point defense interceptor than it's unforgiving slow speed characteristics.

Default Thorpe Brothers F-104 Info......

The wing tip tanks are model rocket tubes and nose cones, the fixed landing gear is located in the scale position, the control surface throws and c.g. balance location shown on the plans were A-OK, mine flew just right, the wing has foam cores sheeted with balsa, the core templates are shown on the plans, no built up wing available.
