Default Latex drying time

I need some advice. I am in the "rivet" phase on my Yellow P-47 and venturing into new territory all the time. I will be using Behr latex exterior paint for the first time then weathering the surfaces before adding a clear coat to seal the weathering powders in place.

I have read that a 30-day period should pass before spraying the clear coat but I have read that a clear coat was applied before the latex fully out-gassed with no bad effects. I have also heard that if the structure was left in the sun that the drying time for the latex would be accelerated. I will be using a gasoline engine in this plane so I'm not concerned about the negative effects of nitromethane on the latex.

I am racing to complete my project in time to attend the Warbirds Over Atlanta fly-in this coming September 8th and 9th and a 30-day drying period obviously would not fit into that schedule.

Should I go directly from the latex to the clear coat or should I hold off on the weathering until after the fly-in and give the latex enough time to fully dry? What would you folks recommend?

Al

I have since changed my mind and I will be using Warbird Colors for my finish.

Hi Al,

I just finished spraying my Byron P-51 with Behr Latex Silver #743 faux paint, several other RCU members have used it as well. I was pleased with results and I did not notice that typical sticky setup of other latex paints. I don't know what color scheme your doing but if it's silver give this stuff a try.

Carl
