What full scale warbird did you get a chance to fly in?

How did this fun topic get so litigious? For the record, I've actually been in all of the following aircraft while they were FLYING. The "walk-thru" list would be way too long. But yes, that was when I was in the military. Before the military, I lived in a town where several warbird cargo aircraft were used (Alaska....go figure). So, since we are breaking the lists into categories, before the military I flew in DC-3, C-47, DC-6, DC-7, C-119 (both with and without jet augmentation), C-46, and even one C-97 (converted KC-97). Technically, even Cessna 170s, 180s, 185s, Beavers, Hughes 300s, and Otters are warbirds too, and I've flown in all those too. Alaska really is an aviation mecca. BTW, since the GUARDRAIL is just a highly modified Beech, if we've flown in a Kingair, does that count?

No disrespect was intended to anyone who's served, no matter what the country etc, but they would tend to have a distinct advantage over the average Joe when it comes to warbird flights.
Happy to hear from those who have served, particularly if they have a story to share with us all.

Why? Speaking only for myself, I am proud to have served. I do not think the forum will run out of space if this thread has a few more lines posted here. I for one would like to hear a story or three to go along with the list of birds some of my older brothers and sisters in arms served in.

Can we rule out flights whilst serving in the military, as it's very easy for some to accumulate a long list?

As for me, I got paid to ride in C-130's , C-141's , C-9's, and a couple of times in the C-17 before I got out. For fun, L-19, L-4, UPF-7 and PT-17. And my dream list would fill the hard drive of RCU

The flight was a gift to me from my wife and I'd do it again in a heart beat if the chance arrived but I suspect it's a once in a life time thing. Hey, now I know what it's like in one of those old bird cockpits though !!!!!! I can't imagine the pressure on your body with a real fast and highly maneuverable jet or advanced WWII craft even. The down side of the flight was that the models took on less meaning to me, I mean I can't climb into the cockpit !!!! Our props are mostly too small !!! The sound of our engines should be more like a big block Ford with headers open !!! The plane ride reminded more of my drag racing days than model flying !!!! The up shot is that I now know how rediculously we all fly the models now and then !!!

Oh, now are we going to add simulators?
Ok, in that case... T-37, T-38, C-141.

Oh, and I 'flew' a Mirage simulator. That may not count given it barely qualified as a simulator against todays modern standards (analog computer).

And what a ride I'll bet THAT was. Holy Cats.
I forgot about my T-34 ride, back on my 40th b'day. Went dogfighting west of Marrietta Ga, just a couple of years before the wing spar failures. What a hoot.

Lets see, not exactly WWII stuff but:
C130
C17
H53
I recommend if you ever get the chance to fly on a C130 pass on it, not exactly first class accommodations.

P-51D Mustang at the age of 10, 2 Stearmans by the time I was 12, and an AT-6 Texan at the age of twelve as well. Had the chance to ride in a B-17, but they wouldnt allow anyone under the age of 18 on board while flying. I was only about 10 at the time. I got a great tour of the B-17 though. Also got the chance to get on board of a B-25 at the age of 10 as well. I am now 16 and fly in a Stearman regularly. I LOVE WARBIRDS!!

RE: What full scale warbird did you get a chance to fly in?
Last year my grandmother passed. My dad, who was her only child, passed 19 years ago. So us grandkids got a few bucks. First thing my brother and I did was fullfill one of our wishes. I called Planes of Fame in Chino, CA and set up a ride in two P-51s for what they called a "double ride". 20 minutes was a single ride. So we were supposed to go for 40 minutes, but the pilots were having so much fun that we went for almost an hour. The pilots were great. They took turns in the lead, did some low level high speed passes over local airports, including March Air Force Base. The fun part was watching my pilot when we were in the rear position. He never looked forward. Just kept his eyes focused on the lead plane that was I guess, 40' to 50' away from us. This is going to sound a little "corny?", but I know my dad and grandmother were with us for the flight. The weather was perfect, the flight was great, and waving to my brother in a P-51, well crap, it just doesn't get any better than that. The ride cost us both about $1500.00 each. It was some of the best money I have ever spent. On top of it all, the money was a donation to the Planes of Fame Museum, were they restore warbirds. If any of you are ever in So Cal, you should check out the museum. Or better yet, go to the airshow they put on in May. Here is their website: www.planesoffame.org ................And by the way, great question!

It was still hush hush when I got to go there. Sat in the front seat with a 185 lb German Shep police dog panting in my left ear. The absolutely most impressive thing about the blackbird was that it had mid 60's steam gage technology. ALL round dials.

I suggest you pull back on that stick, it looks like your altimeter is faulty....

I got a ride in an SNJ while flying formation with another SNJ and an AT-6 along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains east of Colorado Springs. Note in the one picture that terra firma is "up".
