RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
TLH101,
I followed your build on the Bert Baker P-39. You did a fabulous job on that bird!!!! As I recall, there was a mishap at the field, though. What eventually became of your Airacobra?
Your posting on the Robart AT-6 gear jogged my memory. I do recall seeing that info before and completely forgot about it. (At 58 years of age, I seem to be forgeting a lot these days!) I went to Robart's website earlier today and they have gear for both the Palmer Plans P-63 and the Consolidated P-39. While the written description states that both the mains and nose gear are available for both sets, they only have a drawing for the Consolidated nose gear. Fortunately, both of their nose gear struts measure the same so they do, in fact, have a set of gear for the 1/5th scale P-39 available. It may be found under "Retracts", "Planes Between 20 and 55 Pounds" and "Special Order". You're right, though. The AT-6 main gear is spot on the money. Interesting.

Wow, I guess this thread really shows the interest out there for more P-39 kits. Hopefully top flite will
read this and bring back the kit, a giant scale one would be even better. Meanwhile I'm working on my old
red box kit now in the painting process, this kit is not close enough to scale to justify spending a zillion hours
finishing it so I'm going for something nice but quick, I'll take some pics tonight.
BTW anybody have ideas or tricks to make the exaust stacks? My kit didn't have them, I was thinking using
brass tubing but I'm open to suggestions.

Does anyone know what happened to the Dave's Custom Models 1/5 scale P39 kit. I think he was out of the Austin, Texas area. I built this one several years ago.

There was a company in Santa Rosa, CA who bought the Dave's Custom Models molds for the 1/5 P-39. I drove up to see them and see if I could get a kit. The molds were pretty rough and they weren't too interested in making the P-39 available again. They had an all composite P-47 and they wanted to sell me that instead.

Warbirds,
I too am a lover of the infamous p-39. There are a few kits out there that are vintage from the 70's like the Sterling P-63 kingcobra Which is actually the Maxey Hester design. Also, there is a Debolt p-39 kit which looks interesting. I have both these kits and am anxious to build them. However, I'm in the middle of restoring a Topflite (gold Edition) p-39. Sometime I think building from scratch is easier than restoring one that has seen much service.

RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
Hey Dean, When I decided that I needed a P63, I did some research on the King and the 39 . I found that they were pretty much the same except the 63 tail feathers were a different shape but the fuse was the same. Wing span if I recall was a little longer. Since I wanted to build a P 63 racer for the USRA, I ordered a P39 fuse from Joe Zimmerman , bashed the snot out of it untill I had the right dimensions for the King which needed to be 22.5 % scale or 100 inch span unclipped. I wanted a clipped wing 63 for the Unlimited class. I found a picture of a clipped wing 63 that raced in reno and decided I would build that one. When I was done bashing I built a plug and the rest is history. I decided to be real cute and design a set up so I could put the engine as far back as possible so I would at least be able to come close to balancing the thing on the wing. I called Russel Stoltz who makes Husky Challenger engines which are Top End engines. We decided to do a trade a few years earlier, an engine for a completed Stiletto. The engine was a 200cc inline with a 12 inch extension so I could come close to balancing the thing. The engine with the extension was 17 lbs which brought the weight of the King to 50 lbs with the ballast in the tail end. It balanced at 1/2 inch in front of the the leading edge. Close enough. With the 76 inch wing and 25 Hp in the snoot, I'm off to the races in Reno. The weather was awfull, I was spooked so I arranged for a pilot to test fly it before the race. Snap rolling on take off was very common in the early days. With ground effects and jumpy thumbs and power to get airborn in ten feet, the ole snap roll trick bit us in the butt. I did win the Technical Engineering award which was 2 Tickets to the Reno Air races. I built another King, this time with a Herby up front that weighed 37 lbs. The Herbys weighed around 12 lbs which put the balance at the wings leading edge which is where I like it. I hauled It out to "Wild Bill Malos" house in the LA area to go testing at the dry lake beds close to his place. I had it going so fast down the runway I could have sworn it was doing70 mph I was holding the elevator full up trying to get the thing to rotate but it never did. I drove the thing back to us and determined that we needed more elevator to get it to rotate which it did. But going against every thing I knew about doing 1 thing at a time, I also added some lead to the tail end. The second attempt to getter airborn got us airborn allright ,but I didnt need to get it airborn in Ten feet , you know the rest. I know what to do do next time, Try one thing at a time. Anyway, We do make a builders kit for the 39 and the King, at 22.5%. I have a 63 in stock. I used Robarts all around and they are perfect for this plane. If a guy doesnt go racing this thing will fly with G62. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it.....Dick

RE: P-39 Airacobra anything thread!
Okay Kids, if you stroll on over to the thread "New planes from Meister Scale", you will note that the P-39 has been suggested a number of times. Well, PJ has posted a request on that thread for information and documentation to initiate design and, hopefully, fabrication of an Airacobra. While this is certainly no guarantee that Meister Scale will go through with the process of generating a kit for the masses, it is a positive step in that direction.
If any of you has information that could be used to aid PJ in designing a kit of either the P-39 or the P-63, please, contact him either on the "New planes from Meister Scale" thread or by a private message. This is our best bet at this time for a truly cool and unique warbird.
Thanks to all and have a happy New Year!

Hey guys, alsways have loved the p-39. I dont have time to build a warbird(I do build just not anything that complex). At one time I had looked at getting the vq p-39 and kitbashing it. I will say one thing if hanger 9 ever came out with a p-39 I would be the first to buy one.
p.s great looking p-63 race44.
