Olive Drab P51D????
I am currently building a GP P51D with saito 65. Our club is going warbird crazy with all type of P47's Mustangs,109's,Corsairs and even Macchi's!!! Has anyone ever seen an OD P51D? Every P51 at the club is silver with invasion stripes. Is there a source on line to look at paint, squadron markings? I'm familiar with Squadron shop books but only wanted to catch a glimpse for stand off scale. Thanks!

Thanks Burl
I'm very familiar with the razor back version of the P51 but was sort of looking for the bubble canopy P51 "D" model. I have not seen one in OD and was wondering if we ever had any painted that way rather than bare aluminum. Thanks, though....

Look up the "Gunfighter" scheme that is on one of the Confederate Air force's planes, I think it is their plane, it shows up at a lot of air shows. It is OD on the back and top of the front with silver on the bottom of the nose, the wings, plus a yellow rudder. Vinyl graphics are readily available from people like Kirby's Kustom Vinyls to complete the scheme.

Lot's of em. "Butch Baby" 357th Fighter Group, 362nd Sqdn.
2 line red/yellow checkerboard nose, red/yellow spinner,
white V G4 on fuse.
Take an ARF, lightly sand with 1000/1200 wet/dry or fine steel wool. Spray on light coat of gray primer, then a coat of OD polyurethane such as Perfect. You got one that is different.
I'll look up some more.

355th FG and 357th FG were overpainted with OD for possible base in Europe after D-Day.
357th retained one white stripe inboard top and bottom of wing and stab.
355th overpainted all except some bare metal around vertical stab-fuse area.
Undersides were standard light grey.

OD P-51
I'm just about ready to paint my Byron P-51. I'm doing it in RAF dark green and medium gray, just like the the P-51 "Frenesi". These colors have been verified by the owner of the real aircraft. Send me an email or pm and I can send you some pictures that I got from the owner.

I have a FLITE GLASS P-51D DONE IN O.D. AND THE PLANE WAS FLOWN BY COL. JOHN ENGLAND fro corouthersville missouri . The name was MISSOURI ARMADA. He was a leading ace in the 357th F.G. and you can find info on his plane . Try p-51 aces of the 8th air force. There is a whole series of these books on almost all the ww-2 fighters.Hope this helps Tom

Well, I have about a dozen pics that I just uploaded to my webste and did the code to show here. The Webmaster has rules set to only allow a pic or two per post. So it blew away the last half hour of my efforts to show some really neat paint schemes.
Sorry, I'm not spending the rest of my life repeating myself!

Best OD Schemes
If you a mixed silver & OD scheme please visit www.361fg.com the website of the 361st FG which operated mustangs as part of the 8th AF. I run the site & would be happy to assist with colour schemes - please visit the models page to see my mustang.
Alternatively if you want only OD the only group that operated these were the 357th FG which included the likes of Chuck Yeager & Bud Anderson.
Bud's site has some superb profiles with all the information you will need - please see
http://www.cebudanderson.com/357profliles.htm
Attached hopefully is an example.
Good luck
Jason
