Wow, that really looks very nice! As Charlie said, these Soviet warbirds are really not modelled often enough...
I believe the best translation for "Za Rodinu" would be "For the Motherland" - but my Russian is a bit rusty...

Outstanding model! May I ask about some details? I am thinking that your project was built from plans but maybe not. What is the wing span, engine used the like? I have always loved the lines of the MIG-3 and I have a set of plans around here, somewhere that a club member gave me. I think it is 1/5th scale but I do not remember whose plans they are.
Anyway, you make me want to move up that particular subject on my “want to build” list. Thank you for the picture.

Thanks for all the nice comments. To tell the truth, when I posted the picture last night, I was just trying to see if the pic would post. Well it did. I have some much better pictures that I will post later this evening along with the specs etc.

and this
more stuff and probably enough pictures.
This was a fun build, but it taxed my abilities. The plans are from "Roamin Research", more that likely you have seen them in High Flight. I bought them about 12 years ago and finally got around to bulding the ship.
Specs:
WS 101"
length 87"
wt. 35 lbs
engine G-62
Wing area 1800" +/_
These plans were drawn in 1985, so you can imagine that some changes needed to be made for 2003. But basically the designer did a good job. The profile seems to be pretty good, but the plan view was wrong. In order to make the plane scale in the "engine dept." some changes had to be made. I used a pretty good set of 3 views and got the shape of the nose pretty close I think.
The plans were drawn with fixed gear and and I wanted retracts so had to do a bit of engineering on the wing to get that done. I used Gene Barton retracts. He was nice enough to make me an odd ball size spinner so I thought is should repay the favor and use his retracts. They work great.
The plane is all balsa and birch ply covered with 1.5 oz fiber glass and Z-Poxy finishing resin. The exhaust is "live". I routed it up to sides, silver soldered up a manifold and fab'd the exhaust pipes. It works fine, but took a bit of tweaking.
Happy to answer any questions,

P.S.
This plane and two others were probalbly the last of the aprox. 3500 MiG-3's built. One was named "For the Bulshivic party", the next was "For Stalin" and this one is "For the Homeland"

Exhaust
OK, I'll open the cowl and take some pix. It's pretty simple. You have to make a maniford and it has to be soldered with silver solder as the temp of the exhaust will soften tin solder. I must have made 3 dozen different exhaust pipes. I made them out of foam, glassed them and then desolved the foam with thinner. Then I coated the inside of the pipes with RTV to keep the heat of the exhaust from melting the pipes. It worked, but only so so. Next I fab'd the pipes out of hard balsa, coved them with f'glass, carved out the inside, coated it with RTV and they work great.
It's fun to have the exhaust coming out of the correct location.

MiG-3
Hello, I recently found your MIG and it is absolutly awesome! Wow am I impressed. I have a question for ya though. I'm building one for scale combat and looking to finish the trim scheme. I also found the pict that I have displayed below. As you can tell, the big difference is the one below has big red portions of the outer wings. As far as I can tell, the writing on the side is the same, indicating that they are the same planes. I'm wondering if there's anyway to tell if they are two different planes? Are there any experts out there? (And no, it's not mine or me in the picture, I found the pict on warbirds.com)
Also, what do you have as far as markings on the bottom of yours? Can you include a pict?

oops
try again.
The undersides are Sky Blue with red stars.
The plane in that picture you posted is wrong. He has combined two schemes. The scheme that you see on mine was on 3 airplanes. They were all white with sky undersides. There were lots of other schemes and one common winter one, which seems to be mixed in with one you posted, had a white fuz and center section and red outer wings with a sky belly. This was to make it easier to see in the snow if they were shot down, which happened a lot when they met the Me-109.
If you do a search on the web you will find quite a bit of info in the MiG-3. Send me your e-mail address and I will send you a better picture which is too big to post here.

Nicely done, but I still believe the paint scheme is a combination of two different schemes, but who knows, in the USSR in 1941, things were crazy. Sometime they had to "retreat" the factory 700 miles back away from the front and start producing the plane nearly on the run. So, I reckon any paint job could have happened. I am sure that the plane I rendered was all white on the top and the inscription read "For the Homeland". From my reasearch, nearly all USSR planes had some sort of slogan on the side. Where American planes said " Betty Grable", Russians tended to say things like "Stalin ROCKS".

Mig-3 Cowling
Hi Bish,
Your Mig-3 looks great.
I am thinking of building one from the Roamin Plans.
Do you know if the cowling available from Fibreglass Specialties is accurate in outline?

Yes, the cowl is pretty good and I used it, but made some mods. Kind of hard to explain, but while the outline of the plane is accurate on the plans in the side view, it is not scale in the plan view. In other words, the plan does not include the "bumps' for the engine, so I used 3 views to get that right and it entailed adding some foam and fiberglass work along each side of the cowl and back along the fuze to get the "look" right. I cut cowl, about 5" back down to below the exhaust line and then aft. Made it easier to get things looking proper and to facilitate removal. If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I will see if I can make it more clear lol. Alos the air intakes on each side took a bit of surgery to get them to track back on the fuze as they should.

Thanks for the info, I get what you mean.
I'll probably still use that cowl too, although I don't like paying $70 + import taxes for something I'm still going to have to butcher!
But don't think I could justify the work in a new one off moulding for the Mig.
Your ZG62 looks better hidden than other Migs I have seen, is it down to careful cowl cutting or do you have a long extension on the engine? (I will be using a ZG62 also)
How does she fly? All the reports I can find say that the Mig is a great flyer, especially those posted on this forum.
