Default paint color for a sopwith pup

Hello,

I am looking for some guidance regarding the paint for my Sopwith Pup.

At this point I am open to finishing with Butyrate or household latex.

My biggest problem is trying to identify the right color. I am looking for a close match to the standard color used on these planes.

I have been told that it is "PC 10" or "PC-12"

I do not have any swatches to work with. I do have some pictures to work with but I am highly doubtful that the computer match systems would be able to get an accurate color due to shadows, bright spots, reflections etc...

from what I can tell it looks to be an olive drab / tan color maybe even has a bit of red hugh to it.

Please help.

Ready to paint

ps... the plane has already been doped.

Thank you for any help! Mike,

As far as I know there is only one Mfg for PC10. That is http://www.warbirdcolors.com/ It's a water based paint.

PC 10 is sorta olive drab and sorta not. It's also pretty debatable as to the exact color and shade because there were several different manufacturers supplying the paint at the time. Plus the weather has a considerable effect on the paint, hence it might look different depending on the age of the plane. You can mix your own paint but if you aren't going to compete then I'd buy it ready made.

As to the "tan" color. It's not a paint its the color of the fabric. Unbleached Irish linen was used on the planes and the non-painted portions were clear doped only. You might consider Antique solartex for fabric if you haven't already covered the plane. It's a good match for the original fabric color.

Bob,

THANK YOU,

I have been to their site before but for some reason I thought they were only doing WWII colors.

I am so excited! Thank you!

You're welcome. If your excited then I'm excited!.. I made my own PC-10 color and it was fun but took a lot of research to get it right. I'm glad I could help.

I have basically been paralyzed by the paint situation. I was getting ready to just try and get something that looked close. I have been struggling with the choice of Butyrate or Household paint (the fumes really got to me with the Nitrate dope)

Now I get the best of both worlds, a really close match and I can do it in my garage with out putting on a space suit!

Hope you get to do some flying this weekend.

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike

I painted my Pup with Butyrate dope. I made up the PC 10 colour myself from some info I got on the net. I matched my colour to match the documentation that I was using. it seems that the PC 10 colour was different and never a complete match from airplane to airplane.
I attached a pic of the one I am modelling and me with my Pup.

Mick Reeves models sells PC-10 paint. I have a 1/4 Camel painted with it. It is a nice paint.

Mick does sell paint. It's made by Flair in the UK and decent paint. It's just as easy to use Warbird colors in my opinion.
I'll post a picture of my SE5a that I formulated from paint swatches I got from the full scale. It's authentic for that one plane!

Another vote for the Mick Reeves PC10 colour. It is very good paint and I've used it several times before. Heres my Pup, using paint mixed to the same shade as the Mick Reeves stuff. The Pups nearly finished, hoping to maiden it in the next couple of weeks. The last pic is the scheme I have chosen.

Hope this helps,

Ian.
