Default RE: Anyone Have a Robart P-47 yet?

I mounted the cowling next as this must match the correct outline of the plane with the engine conforming to it, and not the other way around. I like to make solid mounts inside the cowl with bolts being accessed from the front. Yes it is more work, but a plane this nice should not have mounting screws on the outside. To get the cowl mounted in the correct position, the bottom lip fits nicely on the ¼â€firewall. I took a fair bit of time to ensure that the rest of the cowl was lined up. To get the proper spacing, I used the low tack painters tape to hold things in place, and small squares of foam to get the air gap around the top and sides consistent. As said I took my time, but the results in my opinion are perfect. On to mounting the engine next.

I forgot to mention in my last post about mounting the cowl that I use ¼†pins to align it as well as making the fastening much easier. Just slide the cowl on the pins, and it stays there. Now you can take your time to install the screws to lock it in place.

Time to mount the engine. I know that some people don’t put right thrust in at this point, but it really does make a difference and is well worth the effort. There is a lot less pulling to the left on take off as well as vertical lines are a breeze. My math teacher said that someday I would appreciate being able to use trigonometry. Well here it is. As you can see, I have incorporated 1 ½ degrees of right thrust into the mount. When you include the length of the engine, it will push the mount about ½†to the left on the firewall. On a side mounted carb engine, I also like to make the mount in an H shape with the blade in the center. Its stronger than an open box structure and still has space to secure batteries ignition modules or lead. To make the mount stronger, I pin all joints including the firewall mount with tooth picks and epoxy into predrilled holes. Next, I measure the depth from the front of the cowl to the back firewall, and add a ¼†for prop clearance. This will give me the exact distance that my engine and mount will need to be. Now I can build the mount on the workbench while using this value and the distance from the prop hub backwards. This step actually makes building the mount quite simple. When it is complete, temporarily bolt the engine and mount together. Now to center the mount and engine structure, I use a disk that is cut as shown and bolt it in place of the prop. The inside diameter of the disk is the same radius as the inside of the cowl. I had tabs for a different reason, but it is not necessary here. This makes it easy to line up as you can see a consistent gap on both sides and top of the cowl. My engine is a Brison 4.2, and as you can see, there is lots of room. The carb doesn’t even stick out. Well back to building. The wing will be next.

Thanks F6HLCT for keeping us informed with your build progress! I was hoping that you would jump into this thread since I knew you had one in the basement!

I am sure that there are quite a few people interested in this build thread. Once this plane is completed, you will have a work of art that you should be proud to own and fly!
Keep us posted with your progress and those pictures are great!

See you at the flying field!

I am glad to see new members jumping into this thread, but I am surprised with the potential number of people that have this ARF, that we are not seeing the interest. By looking at the activity over the last few months, I would assume that there must be only 3 people with this kit. I too would like to hear from others and learn from their experiences. Has anybody flown one yet?

I have one sitting in it's box under the work bench. I got one done in the white gel coat so I can put on the colors I want on it.
It's not in the line up to be built yet; but from watching your build here I may consider moving it up sooner than I figured.
Keep the work going and keep documenting what you are doing, it is of much interest to me.

Thanks for sharing.

Hi All, One of my customers has just recieved his and it is setting on my work bench. It is the one with the yellow cowl with the black skull on it. I am waitng on the instruction disk and, engine and tires.I will install Robart gear in the plane using a Jomar sequencer. From first inspection it looks really good. Here are a couple of photos. I will start a build thread when I get started. The suggestions from the ones who have already started will be appriciated.
Good Day!

Well, [link=http://www.robart.com/P-47%20ARF.aspx]here is the (click) website[/link] of Robart and they state the "no guts no glory" ARF is sold out[X(]. That means there are more then only 3 ARF's sold. Which surprises me...that high price tag.

I like to see this bird fly!!

Happy landings

Hi Guys,
Just yesterday I became the owner of a Fiberglass fuse Ziroli P-47 92" kit. It was available locally for a reasonable sum.
I,m hoping to modify the standard kit to make it a 2 piece wing similar to your Robart P-47,s
Can anyone tell me is the wing tube 1 piece which passes through the fuse wing root area or 2 pieces that slide from either side?
Also what diameter is the tube[s] and how long?
Any pics of how the wings attach to the fuse would be greatly appreciated.
Keep up the good work on the build guys.
Thanks
Dave

Regarding the wing tube, here are some pictures of the Robart kit, and how they did it. The tube is metric for this kit, but I have put the values in inches. The tube is 35†long with a wall thickness of .06â€. This is a one piece tube that passes through the fuse, and extends out 10.75†on both sides. The picture of the bulkhead was taken from the rear of the fuse and shows the supporting glass tube mounted on the front of the bulkhead. The other photos show the anti role pins, and how the complete assembly looks. I am not sure if Ziroli plans show it in the same fashion, but the way this kit has done the plug in wings looks like a solid solution.

Thanks for the pics and the information.
The Ziroli plans don,t offer a 2 piece wing. So I,m kind going into uncharted waters on this one.
It is interesting to see that the wing tube is placed high in the wing/fuse root rib. Probably in order to compensate the the dihedral in the wing panel.
It would also appear that the wing tube isn,t more than a 1" [25mm] in diameter, can you confirm this?
I,m thinking that I can take my ribs from W1 to W2 and build them into my fuse permanently as per your Robart plane and then place the correct amount of dihedral into a second W2 to establish my overall
wing angles.
It sounds easy, but I,m sure I,m going to be left scatching my head on this one for sure.
I will provide any updates as I go along if you don,t mind as my P-47 is going to be a hybrid of sorts.
I included a pic of the Ziroli fuse and my starting point.
thx
Dave

That cowl looks a bit small to place the Moki 150 radial in it.............

If you want the moki, you will have to go for the Comp arf Corsair.... It was designed to use the 250cc moki engine in the plane....

There is no manual that comes with the Robart P-47, there is cd with pictures and a basic assembly sequence for this aircraft that comes with it.
For those who wish too see a more in depth build of the plane check out the following link; it is very informative.
