RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
Hi everyone!!!!
I recently purchase the mustang and started building and adding the robart retracts with robostruts. I am also adding functional gear doors as well. Ill post pics of my progress. The trimming of the retract rails was a pain to get the robart 510RS retracts to fit so the struts are flush when retracted. I'm going to be using the sonictronic hinge kit for the gear doors. so far the progress is going fairly smooth.

Great work Badazz.
I am also in the process of completing this P-51 60 size kit built that I got. THis one is covered with the Glamorous Glen scheme. My TF AT-6 does not have support in the air so this one has be be finished soon. Just have to figure out what engine to put. OS 91FS, OS120FS, or a recently acquired an OS160FXi that I could install a 4 blade prop (15.5x12x4)like I did in my previous P-51 with an OS200FS.
So, we are going to have an Airplane of the world event at the end of June, Perhaps we could fly these in formation!

I have a 125 saito in mine and she fly's with authority, fun to fly. The 91 I have seen and fly's barley scale. If I remember the OS120 is pumped and would kick it up a notch. Of course if you want to save some money I like the DLE20 with the wrap around, and get rid of the mess of nitro. I love 4 stroke's but have several gas motors and like the clean'er burn, economy to run, generally less expensive. But I believe you would be happier with the 120 if you stay with those choices. Great Warbird to fly.

Springer,
Yes the OS120FSIII is the best option for me now, but the biggest prop I was able to use with this engine is an apc 14x10/15x8. The 160fxi on the other hand, can swing a 17x12/16x14 apc or the 15.5x12 4 blade that I already have. With this set up the ME 109's/FW 190's will have a hard time catching it!
Plus the 160FXi sits perfectly in the nose (34 oz. only with the header). The only problem I have is the noise. It has a header right now and it sounds so loud without a pipe (it would run without it because this engine uses a pressurized line to the tank so I do not need a vent line from the muffler). Well, it's either this or the 120.

Good weather today, and I'm taking my to the field.
Went from a 75AX to a 95AX, and she really performs well. Haven't had a chance to completely get used to it yet as the bad weather moved in early last fall.

Hey Ton2di how are you getting the gear doors to work? The spring function on the sonic tronic kit is not all that reliable. I'm thinking about a sequencer with a servo to get this to work

I will try to post some pics of the installation. It has a bell crank mechanism that it linked to the main air valve.

Kelly, I have found the 16-8 two blade to be best with the DLE 20. I'm getting about 8,500 rpm with the compact J-Tec pitts muffler. I got to fly it this week end. Finally had some good weather. I can't get over how well this thing flys with the DLE. The only problem was occassional miss at full throttle and rought sounding at mid range. However a change of spark plug seemed to have fixed it. Mine is the one in RAAF colors. I have over 200 flights on this airplane.

Kelly,
RBean is correct. The 16x8 is a good prop for the DLE 20.... but, if you want more speed then you would want to get an APC 15x10. A club member has it in his 60 size P-51 and it is so fast (around 8,300 rpms-ground).

Ok, so I had the Hangar 9 Blue Nose and it tip stalled on the maiden and was a total loss. Should I get this Top Flite to replace it and put the DL 20 in it?

R/C Foolish,
The H-9 P51 is heavy when assembled based on the reported weight here compared to the TF P-51... maybe part of the reason why it tip stalled on take off. Besides, a lot of people are complaining about how violently it snaps on turns. So if you really like P-51's then this TF 60 is great for you. Lots of happy owners here!!!

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
My Top Flite Mustang flies great with a DLE 20. Weights 11 lbs but tip stalls are not a problem. It will stall and roll to the left, but does not snap over. Also with flaps down it slows down nice. I suppose you could tip stall the thing, but you would have to work at it. Like take off too slow and pull the nose up. But with a DLE 20 if you used lots of right rudder, you could probably power out of it. Its not a sports plane where you can just hit the throttle and pull up on the stick and go straight up. On take off you need to let roll, let the tail come up and pick up a little speed. But for a RC warbird these planes fly really good. I land on the mains (wheel landings they used to call this) with the flaps. You can land three point with the flaps, but its flying very slow when it lands, so its easy to get too slow.

RE: Top Flite '.60 size' P-51D Mustang ARF: Building & Modifications
Test flew mine yesterday. Glad I read the balance point everyone in here is using. I think mine would do better at 5". Take off was good and it only needed a few clicks of down and left. Flew like a pattern ship. I see I'm going to have to shim the retracts in the rear a bit. It wants to nose over landing on the mains. That even with holding a little up elevator. But overall a great flying model. Mine is powered with a Magnum 91fs. plenty of power.

Hi guys. I am just finishing up my mustang with a DLE20 up front. Does anybody know what prop adapter is good for this engine and spinner? The one which comes with the kit doesn't fit the prop shaft.
Thanks!
