Here is the progress on making my 1/8 pilots full figured. I've done a bit of research to get the gear authentic. Since they will be molded in sections, they will actually be positionable, either sitting or standing. I still have to finesse the intersection of the joints at the knees, shoulders and hands, but so far so good. Let me know what you guys think.

THIS is an awesome thread! Wow, you guys are great artists. It is inspiring me to want to try my own hand at it sometime.

The only thing I have done so far, is assemble some resin and plastic figures for my models and then paint them.

Looken great so far! You just need to work on a smooth transition at the knees. Articulating joints in a cast figure is very difficult to do and still keep everything looking right. The less articulation the better from a construction, casting, look point of view. In my humble opinion you would be better off making a standing figure and a seated figure with limited arm and hand movement. Just something to consider.

I am finishing with the sculpting part and now am ready create the molds for the full figured version of my pilots. They are getting hands and feet! After baking the clay, the fit between the articulated parts is very good. I was worried about the Sculpey shrinking, but couldn't tell that it did. I also tried out an idea to have a "clip-on" wool collar to achieve more variation between the figures in a crew. The "clip-on" idea worked very well. The collar just slips on over the regular collar and looks good. Amazing that a wire brush in clay creates wool!

I like the new on board shot as well, he looks like he just wasted an enemy target, and is a little cocky about it.....

I finally got the gloves/hands made on my 1/3 pup pilot, I cut the head and collar off the bust and grafted them on to my carved foam bodied pilot... Even though he is short by third scale standards, he still sucks up alot of room in the plane....

A new project finished, made a clay bust, then vacu-formed the driver and mechanic..messed up my plug then redid it..lost some molded in detail.. but finally got them done..Mating the pieces was trickier than I had hoped....

Finally got the molds made and my first set of castings completed for my new FULL-FIGURE bomber crew. I just finished painting a set and couldn’t resist seeing how well they hold up within a realistic setting. They are posing in front of our 1/9 scale Ziroli B-25. The only Photoshop work is the background.
The figures can be posed in a sitting, kneeling, or any variation thereof. For more info, check out www.bestpilots.typepad.com
