RE: ROBARTS ZIROLI 92
Joe Nall,
Just got back.
Arrived Tuesday afternoon and got back Saturday evening.
Except for Saturday's rain, the days were great.
I only got four flights in: two on the C-45 and two on the Nieuport.
Impossible to get solo flights in so the P-47 maiden will have to wait.
The Nieuport's tail wire can loose and the entire stab and elevator was 'flapping in the breeze'.
I thought it would soon become a 'lawn dart' but, Ilucked out, and got her on the ground with only the main axle bent.
Got the tail feathers and axle fixed and got a flight in yesterday.
There were about 800 pilots and about about a half mile of planes.
Most of the pictures that Itook were just the warbirds, scale stuff and a few interesting 'others'.
Will post more pictures and videos later but for now, here's my buddy's 44% Fokker:

Up to seven pilots could fly at once and flying went from about 6 am until about 1 am with the 'lighted' planes.
Amazing when jets flew with WW I and everything 'in between' and not one mid-air (although several were claimed by trees and the ground).
The main runway was strictly for a racetrack pattern.
Depending on how many in the air, you could do rolls and loops.
Spotters were mandatory and probably was the main reason why there were no 'mid-airs'.
It was great just watching all those scale planes parade by and doing low straffing runs at about 130 MPH.
The 1500' runway is all 'putting green' type grass (Iwalked around in my bear feet).
With thousands of planes, no matter what you liked, it was there...and in abundance.
One thing Inoticed that no matter what you might bring, there probably was a larger version of it.
The minumum 80" wing span was a rarity!

Here's some of the planes that we brought.
My buddies are usually on my case on being the 'old man' but look who has to take a nap! (Out in that hot sun all day takes it's toll.)
The third picture shows the flight line and it was usually full.
If you wanted to fly though, you didn't have to wait long (watching others fly though made the time go quickly!).
They had another field for those that wanted to 'flip flop' in the air plus float flying, chopper flying and a 'foamy' field.
Food was available 'on site' and those shower facilities were nice.
They had a great Friday night pulled pork and shrimp dinner.
Lots of dealers with all the 'big boys' there plus hobby shops that had any thing you might need to fix up your damaged plane (they had everything for my Nieuport!) (Ispent about $500 on things that I 'needed'!).
There were only about 17 pilots on the old 72 mh frequency and next year, you have to have 2.4 to fly at Joe Nall.
JRput up 72 foamy T-28's at once to show how bullet proof the new 2.4 is.
I'm guessing that about 70% of the planes at the main runway were scale.
Ididn't go down to the stunt runway but I'm guessing there were a lot of them down there.

Videos:
Propwash took videos of my C-45 twin beechcraft so maybe it'll be in their Joe Nall 2009 DVD (Ilucked out with a very scale take off, fly bys and landing).
Here's a few that Itook.
Ziroli Stuka's taking off:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/nall200901-AVI
Stuka's taxi back:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/Nall200902-AVI
122" P-47 taking off:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/nall200903-AVI
Another pilot's nicely done C-45 twin beechcraft taking off:
(there were three of them but we never did in the air, together)
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/nall200904-AVI
C-45 low pass:
http://www.rcuvideos.com/video/nall200905-AVI
Two German pilots with vectored thrust jets did a very impressive flying demo that, hopefully, someone videoed and will post.
It's not often you see jets hovering a few feet off the ground.
The 50% and a new 60% cub were also cool, along with the jet powered glider.
Ihad to go through the great smokey mountains to get to Joe Nall.

fyi,
We're having our giant scale flyin on June 13 at GCRCC field.
Any aircraft that meets IMAAminimum size.
Attached is the 'flyer'.
No landing fee, good and reasonably priced food plus a raffle prize.
Here's also a few pictures of the field.
Besides the main runway, we also have a nice grass runway running perpendicular to the main runway so we can handle all wind directions.

prep for maiden:
The CGis 5 1/2" back from the wing LE along the fuse: Iextrapolated this to the wing tip and Iget 1"behind the back edge of the nav light (if anyone has a more accurate wing tip location, please reply). I 'm using the wing tip as it's very difficult (at least for me!)to hold a 30+ pound plane in the air with two finger tips (left felt tip black line in picture is my CGtest)!
I built a weight box out of 1/4"thick ply and put lead cane (stain glass lead) in the box (I'm finding it difficult to find lead).
I'm guessing that I've got about 3 lbs in the box.
I've got a cover that will be screwed on.
The lead box is also screwed to the sides of the firewall extension for engine maintenance.
I also plan on maidening my ziroli B-25, hopefully on Saturday.

Sam,
I use a lit ply box also but for weight I use lead shot. Try your sporting goods stores or places that cater to those who do thier own reloads for ammo.
The sweet thing is once I get the cg set I mix up a bunch of epoxy and mix it in with the lead shot and I'm all done.

Maidens:
pic 1:
After testing and getting idle/max power out of the 3W-75 at home, Itook her to the field and she ran for about a second and quite.
Not getting spark to the plug so Isent the ignition in.
Hopefully, I'll get it back next week.
pic 2:
I did get to maiden the Ziroli B-25.
Perfect morning, no clouds and no wind.
pic 3:
Iused only half the flaps on landing and landed her fast.
The brakes worked great, ran the engine up at the end of the runway with the brakes on and then released her.
Iwas going to go up to TORKSfield but the morning was perfect, my field is not a 1000' runway but with the grass at each end of the runway, it's about 900' long plus there's no 9' corn next to the runway, like there was last year!
pic 4/5:
I had to max out the ailerons.
I've got about a 1/8" throw from the trim setting:the rudders are slightly left so that may have contributed to the constant left turn.
Ineeded about two more clicks to make her fly level so Ihad to hold the aileron stick a little right for level flight.
pic 6:
Ialso maxed out the elevator trim (about a 1/4" up needed).
I'm glad that Ialways use more than enough flying speed on take off, since, after take off, returning the elevator stick to neutral had the plane going down. Iused up the whole 500' of paved runway before taking off.
Ilanded her fast but the brakes stopped her before the end of the runway.

Ziroli B-25 surface adjustments.
pic 1:
Initially, Iadjusted the elevator to match the slope of the fuse (which was incorrect).
I needed to adjust the elevator to the horizontal stab which puts the TE of the elevator a 1/4" above the back of the fuse.
pic 2:
The old 4/40 rod had a 'Z' bend for the servo end and it had some slop in it so Iput a dubro heavy duty ball link with hex bolt/locking nut on the servo arm with a new 4/40 rod.
pic 3/4:
Even though Imaxed out the aileron trim, adjustment was very minor as the right side only needed to be move up about an 1/8" and the left side down about an 1/8".
pic 5:
rudders were ajusted to the right.
All ready for another flight, tomorrow morning.

Ibought her from a friend.
=========
yellow spit's right aileron twitch.
Well, I've replaced the servo, extension, 'Y' and extension from the receiver, disconnected the other aileron servo and the right aileron still twitches. Using JR's 2.4 and the engine and ignition are new. Only thing left is to replace the receiver! It's getting late so I'll try that, tomorrow.
Just thought of one last try:re-binding!

Just found your Robart P47 thread. Great job! It's motivationg me to finish mine. I bought it last year at Top Gun and they still have not sent me the manual. It's about 95% complete and hope to get back on it soon. It's been sitting idle in my trailer since last July!
I also have a Ziroli B25 in "the bones". Is yours the larger one? What engines did you use?

What Fokker is that modelled from? Idon't know a whole lot about WWIaircraft, but don't think I've ever seen one like that. It looks like a Triplane fuse/engine w/ DVIIwings!
Thanks

RE: ROBARTS ZIROLI 92
Good attention to detail. That is a Fokker DVI. It was use about the same time at the DVII, but it was assigned mostly to the German infrastructure. It was kind of like the homeland security or national guard of it's day. It is a Glenn Torrence Model 1/3 scale model. I finished it in the Max Siedel scheme. The model has the DVII wing shortened by two wing bays. The fuse is nearly the same as the DR-1 but it is slightly longer.

Thanks for the info. I've heard about the DVI but don't think I'd ever seen one before.
Beautiful job. Both building and flying.

Today, Igot the 5th & 6th flight in on the B-25.I think that I've finally got the right throttle setting on landing.Take off was perfect and used the whole runway before liftoff, ascent was gradual and straight for about 500'.The landing was right on the center white stripe and braking about 3/4 of the runway, stopping on the stripe and then taxied back.Unlike the C-45 twin beech where Ican cut the power to idle and let her 'glide' in,the B-25 needs about 20% power to the runway.
