Ziroli SBD Dauntless, uk build
Hello all,
I have just started to build a Ziroli Douglas Dauntless . Its my second Ziroli plane, the first being a 1/7 P47 which got me hooked on this designer. The p47 has a Z38, Robart gear and full Futaba radio, weights 20lbs and flies well. It has had 51 flights now and is need of some maintance. Please see link, and short video on the last page.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_67...tm.htm#6768628
I intend the Dauntless to be a 2 season build, i only build through winter. I do require some guidance in the radio department, servos, recievers ect so will be asking for advice . I will update regulary and look forward to the build comments.

On to the Dauntless , Ive framed up the fuse and started planking/sheeting. Not able to go much further untill wing is assembled and centered to it. I didnt realize just our big this thing is, its huge. I will definatley make the wing as shown on the plans, a 3 pary assembley, but i will include some pinch bolts with access through bottom panels as shown in a thread elsewhere.

Regarding this comment, I've built several of the Ziroli designs and after the first regreted mounting those pinch bolts on the bottom. I don't particularly care to lie on the ground to install them, plus I transport the model with the center section attached to the fuselage.
Why not install the bolts through the top and cleverly hide. Mine are under that red fuel cap.

Thanks for the comments Nick, your advice is more than welcome. Thats a fine looking plane and its the same colour scheme I am doing. If only you had come a day earlier, I have already mounted the pinch bolts into the sections, never thought about accessing them on site for assembley. I too intend to leave centre section on whilst transporting. I will have to continue on with my method now, but the advice has been appreciated and noted for the future,
Pleased you have contributed to the thread.
Kind regards,
frank.

Making steady progress on the wings. Both outer sections are sheeted and are ready for the ailerons to be cut and flaps fitted. Very strong and very big. I have, as i always do, sheeted over the top of the retract area with 1/64th ply. This creates a good lining for the retracts and distrobutes the load bearing over a wide area.,

Looking very good!
One question though, did your laser cut kit come with the holes for the wing tube precut?
I,m starting a Ziroli P-47 once my Sierra gear arrive and would like to make mine a 2 piece wing but am unsure about accurately cutting the holes for a wing tube.

Hello Dave,
My precut kit was supplied by PCK. Yes the wing did come with the holes precut for the tube. I dont believe the plans show a 2 piece wing for the P47 but if you take a look over on RC Scalebuilder theres a guy who has just modified his own to a 2 piece wing. Please see link.

I have the plans and accessories for the 1/5 Ziroli P47 as this is my next build, I too intend to use Sierra for the retracts, great gear.

Hello Frank,
Do you have any pictures of the stringers in the tail area? I am in the process of "stringing" mine and just want to make sure that I am on the same page.

Hello Smitty,
Pleased were building the same kit and at the same time, sure we will be of use to each other. I have left the rear end as basic as I can, just enough to hold it straight and square. I intend to install all pushrods, horns ,tail plane, and fin before final completion of sheeting. I too was a little confuse in this area.
Heres the tailend and some more progress,
all the best,

Greetings Frank,
I did them the same way. It was a little unclear on the plans on how the stringers ran. I have a fellow flyer send me some pics and documents of the Dauntless. If you are interested, please let me know and I can email it to you. Thanks again for the pictures!

On to the flaps then. What a job!! Decided to go exactly with the plan after lots of debate. I am pleased with the outcome but the trailing edge is slightly warped, im hoping this will not be too noticable. Im sure with some more perswation I will get em dead straight.
Ive used large flat Kavan hinges on the ailerons and flaps as suggested on the plan. I was unsure of the installation method shown, but turns out to be first class and strong.
Out of intrest and hoping to keep the weight reasonable I have weighted one wing panel, it comes in at 2.4lb. Im guessing the complete wing will be in the region of 10lb-12lb with gear.

Looks good Frank! I am sheeting my fuse now, not really sure how I am going to do the front aft of the cowl. I will post some pics of how I did it, then off to the wing center section.
Keep up the good work!

Dauntless is taking shape now, tail and fin are complete and installed, will add some more pics shortly.
Im after some advice, im going to use a 6v system and need to purchase some good quality servos. I fly Futaba gear and would appreciate any advice with regards to servos for this size model. Im aware of the expense, but hey, this is what i do!! Any info would be greatly apprecated,
thanks,
frank

Frank,
I used HiTec HS-645 MG servos on flaps and dive brakes; two on the center flap section and singles per surface. Flap servos (4 total) are ganged via a JR Matchbox. Dive brakes via a "Y" harness, as are elevators and ailerons.
JR 4721 servos used on ailerons and elevators. One HiTec 700BB used for rudder.
Two JR H/D switches, dual 6v-1800ma Nicad batteries. I do my own wiring, eliminating all connectors at servo (except for Recvr. input), using 22AWG wire. Wing connectors are Deans 8-pin type; helps reduce numerous connections, especially with wing bomb drops, nav lights, etc.

Nick,
Thats great Nick thankyou. Ive never used Hitec servos before, but ive read lots of good stuff about em, I think i will give them a try and there a fair price.
Im torn between a GT80 or a DA 85, i love Zenohas, big, heavy, well made and never let me down. The DA is something ive not touched on, so im wary, but the power is beckoning me towards her, I will decide shortly.
Thankyou and wish you a good new year,
Frank.

Hi all:
I am currently looking at the Ziroli plans and the "Kit Cutters" full kit. I would appreciate any feed back you could give on these choices?.
Thanks
Gabe
