With everything sanded down, I am using flat latex interior wall paint diluted with about 10-15% tap water, sprayed with a hvlp spray gun, the first coat well help show out any areas I may need to work on, the latex water based paint well loose weight as it dries, since the water evaporates as it drys, I well let it dry overnite and take care of any spots that may need light filling and sand it all down with 200 grit sandpaper.

Looks good George. I like to spray the Latex outside also It dries quicker and a lot easier to see.

Thanks Rich, today is the first nice day we have had this year in the area, gave me a chance to get a coat of paint on, I don't like to leave it in the basement to long without paint and take a chance on the wood degrade or warping, I feel better now I can set it back down in my work area to finish it off, George.

I am glad that there was only a few very minor spots I had to fill and sand, everything looked good otherwise, the next step I think is to start laying out for panel lines and paint lines.

Hey George - quick question for you. I can't quite tell from the pictures how you're going to put rudder servos in. With the formers I see in your fuselage, do you mount a rudder servo tray inside in the back, or do you use a pull - pull system? If you use a pull/pull, where do you mount it - near the back? If not, how do you avoid the wires hitting the fuse formers? I don't see any mention of what to do in my 1981 building instructions. And remember, I'm not too much into scale stuff, I just want to build a big, good flying, attractive P-51.

Anyway, any suggestions for the rudder servo? Oh, and did you put in an access hatch in the back/bottom?

Bert here is some photos of the install of the completed P-51 I have for Sale now on RCU...

Photo1.. I use Great planes 4/40 pushrod and plastic sleeve installed in the fuse, and braced across every other former. I have a pushrod sleeve on each side for the elevators, one in the center for rudder and two sleeves I use for push pull cables for retracting tail wheel.

Photo2... On the left is a 130oz. metal gear servo for half of the elevator,, on the right is another 130oz metal gear servo for the other half of elevator,, the center is a 1/4 scal servo for the rudder and tail wheel- the rudder is a 4/40 pushrod and the tail wheel stearing is with cables which also attach to the 1/4 scale servo, George.

I put down the first coat of latex to check the surface , it looks fine so I can start on the panel line and revit details prior to the next coat of paint. I am using 1/32" sticky on one side chart tape for lines, I leave it on and paint over it,, some people build up around it with primer or paint than take the tape off leaving a panel line groove, I use and a oil bottle with canopy glue in it to lay the revits, the needle point tube on the bottle broke off so I ordered another oiler from Tower.

Yes raised, the canopy glue drys with a pucker in the center perfectly round, I well sand it down flat with 400 grit paper after the second thin coat of latex on the top part of the fuse, and use Duplicolor ultra silver along the side and bottom.

So they end up completely flush? I think I'm missing something.

George have tried Behr premium plus Luminso part num 743 silver. It is a form of latex thinned the same way and supper easy to spray. You will love it . and it leaves a real nice finish. Not chalky like a lot of auto paint. I read on RCU that Home Depot was going to discontue it. But our Home Depot has several bottles of it.

Rich,

My local Home Depot just got in a shipment last week, so I picked up a bottle... 31 oz.
Hehe... they hid it out around the corner and across the isle from the regular Behr latex house paint.

Think I will get another just in case as Behr has taken it out of the online catalog.
I have two birds to do with it. One 100 inch P-51 and the other an 84 inch.

It's good stuff and can be clear coated after a short cure time. Don't thin more than 30 percent
with water. To do so will destroy the bonding quaities of the acrylic latex... as in removing a bit of mask or masking tape where it also removes /peels some of the acrylic latex.

BTW: Best to use an acrylic airbrush medium for a thinner rather than water or windshield washer fluid.

Gsnut I just thinned it with water and accalhol. Had no problem with pulling any paint . I also uce the silver for a base coat. After the color coat you can do weathering and let the silver come through.

No, No just a little sanding to get the tops flat if you don't want them raised to much.

Ok, thanks. But I know you guys know P-51's were flush riveted right? The pics above with the raised rivets on the nose looks a little odd....

George and Rich !

Maybe we should stock up on it if we can ?

Will be going by this afternoon and will check their inventory to see what they may still have.
Your are right on the price.... $ 20.98 Plus tax here so would be around $ 22.79 as per my sales receipt.

It is not in the latex section......Try Interior........ decrative....... and listed as FAUX by Behr !

Seems that it is in demand now that they don't carry it / make it anymore .. duh
So we will see what's there !

Who cares, looking at it from a few feet away it looks great and flys even better, some guys are good with useing a sharped tube for making flush revits, I find it easeir this way, hay nothing is perfect, and nobody I met yet is welling to pay me for perfect either when I go to sell one of these planes.

Sure, I would like to get at least couple quarts I well pay for it, I went to three stores this morning and was told it has been discontinued, remember if you check off package contains liquid on the post office automated package machine it may not spit out the postage stamp to mail it, George.
