Thats what Im trying to tell her..lol
Dirtied up the oil cooler shroud on the inside prior to installing it..there wont be much access to the inside once its installed..made a wash like you recommended Ed..sanded a bit prior and brushed the wash in..the FM seems to want to take as much or little as you want to put on it..

RE: Byron Mustang
I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of a Byron P51 engine bay and cowl with a Q52 and reduction drive installed..
I spoke to Bennet and he has no more Quadra 42's available. With the bolt pattern in my engine mount a 52 will work, however the ones that I have seen with the 52's seem to have the head and the carburetor really protruded and they seem to be not as "fitted" into the stock location..they just dont seem to be as "neat" a package as the 42's and 35's..
I might try and get a used 42, and ask Bennet to rebuild it if I dont decide to go with the 52..
Just wondering if anyone has any photos with the cowl on and off with the reduction drive that I could reference..Thanks

I'm away from home for about a week but when I get back I'll take a couple of pictures for you of my 51. The drive is out right now so I can take a shot of the bare fuse and since its easy to install the drive I can do that for you. Mine is a 42 and has has the Bennitt muffler installed.
Take care

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks John..
Im going to look around for a used 42 and send it to Bennet for a rebuild/carb tune etc..(Unless I see one with a clean looking install of a 52 that I can replicate..)
Ive ordered the Keleo exhaust as well, and am wating for a few test pieces from Kelvin, to get started..Im going to mock it all up with the 35 for now.

I need a muffler for mine, it has a Q42 with a staraight pipe exhaust, waaaayyy too loud for my flying site. I'm anxious to see how the Bennett muffler will work with the back of the engine so close to the firewall.
I also have my drive out right now trying to figure something out for the muffler
Looking forward to that picture.

P 51-D guy.
Thanks for your PM, I attempted to reply but was unable to, apparently your RCU settings are not allowing your account to accept a PM.
If the Bennett muffler would work for my plane as described a few posts above I'd be interested in that trade you offered.
I'm going to wait and see what the pictures HEMI is going to post to see if it will work.
We'll stay in touch,
Merry Christmas,
Todd

Waccoss I sent you a PM on the exhaust..Ill post some pics as I begin the install..just waiting on some parts from Kelvin..
Its all a custom install so hes fabricating based on a bunch of pictures and measurements I sent to him..He doesnt have anything right out of the box for it..
You would have to work out the $$$ and weather or not he would do the work with Kelvin..

RE: Byron Mustang
Im holding off on starting the cockpit and sliding canopy, as Im waiting on the exhaust, and dont want to be in the middle of one thing and have to start another..
Im going through and mounting the the radiator door and screen, and doing a few odds and ends that needed to be done here and there..
For some reason I never thought the radiator door looked right? It never seemed to have the correct shape.. For now Im going to leave it, but it seems to lack that "curve" I see on alot of them..
Its close but..maybe im just spliting hairs..

RE: Byron Mustang
I put everything into permanent place..the Radiator I velcro'd on the front and the back side. Im not so sure Im going to fly it with that in but I dont see why not, the stuff I used is pretty strong and its in there really snug..
The four screws holding the access cover in place are pretty well hidden with the radiator door on..
I also installed the air tank and painted the underside of it black as it stuck out like a sore thumb when it was white..The oil cooler door is epoxied into place as well...
Finally a profile of both in permanent position..again not so sure about the shape of the radiator door..to me it looks right but wrong at the same time..

RE: Byron Mustang
SnakeBT6
here are the pictures of my Byron. Remember I bought this plane as a basket case and have been in the process of returning to as close to original. I had to remove all of the bulkheads and remove excess glue, and a ton of spray in insulation in the fuse behind the wing. Iron Bay had a wood kit that contained all of the bulkheads. I used the prop drive the position the bulkheads by sliding the drive back so it was flush against the fuselage. I installed the bulkheads with aeropoxy from BVM. So while this plane will never be up to your planes standards, it should make a decent flying plane that looks good from 15 feet. My engine is not a 42 its a US41 that was given to me by a friend it has very low time on it. My old Mustang had a 35 and that engine was worn out on other models after I lost the Detroit Miss. The muffler is a Bennett for the 42. I have not trimmed off the pipes yet. As you can see I had to relieve the fuse to clear the muffler. I think it fits pretty good and is way better than the old straight pipe.
Hope this helps you guys. This plane I have is such a basket case I can only work on it for so long and I have to move on to something fresh.
Best regards

RE: Byron Mustang
Hey snake ,
That work your doing on the bottom of the fuse sure is looking super ! ! !
I've been reading your wanting to up the power on the drive, I just put a U.S. 41 on one of my spares , it was'nt too difficult
I had to drill some new holes in the rear support bracket , there is one hole that is already drilled that lines up , this helps in setting the correct angle of alainment ,
two new holes have to be drilled , & one will be so close to the outside edge of the bracket , all one can do is just make a notch for the bolt
I opted to let this hole be one of the two long firewall bolt mounting locations as the aluminum standoff will but up against the rear support bracket ,
I will also need to drill new holes in the fire wall for the new standoff bolt pattern
What i will do here , is make a template of the rear support bracket with the new holes drilled in it , then mark the position of the old holes
then mount the pattern to the firewall useing the old bolt pattern , then mark the new bolt pattern on the firewall, then drill the new holes in firewall.
also , I'm currently having a larger drive pulley made as wellas a solid drive shaft to eleminate the rubber coulpling
the larger pulley will reduce the ratio from 2-1/2 to 1 to roughly 2 to 1 ratio giving the prop more rpm's
I already have the idler pulley , & have the oversized belts on the way, I've found a better belt than the two skinney ones
Its basicly the two skinny belts that are made into one wide belt , it's a way better design ,
when i have it completed i will do some tests
1st , run a unit with a Q-35 & check max rpms
2nd , run the unit with the U.S. 41 less oversized pulley & check rpms again
3rd , run the U.S. 41 with the oversized pulley & compare the numbers
4th , install a Zenoah G-38 ign. coil on the U.S. 41 & check for gains again
I will be posting the info for you here , Keep up the Great Work !

RE: Byron Mustang
Snake and 51D Guy
My US41 came with a radial mount attached to the rear of the engine. This mount enclosed the self starter spring. If you remove this mount the US 41 will bolt directly into the drive without any modifications since its the same basic casting as the Quadra 35 and 42. Look at picture #two in my posting as a reference. I tried to mount the engine with the mount on initially as well. I have the original exploded view drawings from Byron that came with my original plane and if you remove the mount the drive goes together and looks just like the drawing. You can still use the spring starter without the mount and all of the original spacers work as designed.
Hope this helps

RE: Byron Mustang
Thanks for the info guys..Hemi your engine install looks nice and clean..They dont seem to look so bad when done "tight" like that..Especially if you can cut down the exhaust stacks..
Im also interested to see the results of the engine tests..Id really be interested in some shots and machining to get rid of that rubber coupling..Id like to get in on that, if you can direct me to someone to call..same for the belt..let me know if youd be willing to share that info..
Thanks for the compliment..its tough to take a pic in there without a shadow, but it really looks kind of cool looking up through there..Ill probably paint the brass black though as any pics of the radiators Ive seen were almost all black..
If any of you guys know of anyone looking to part with a 41/42 let me know, otherwise Ill check the buy sell threads and ebay..Im sure one will turn up eventually..

RE: Byron Mustang
Snake ,
I too cant wait ! Here's a few pics of the U.S. 41 on the rear support bracket
the Green Arrows point to the Q-35 mount holes , & the White point tothe new for the 41,
There are additional holes drilled from byron, from what i can figure , they were for installing the engine cylinder completely inside the fuse .
All four of my units have this double pattern , Now one has a third mounting pattern ! Ha Ha.
their is one bolt in the pic that has a green & white arrow pointing to it this is the one hole that lines up on the 41 , of the Q-35 pattern.
this was a big help in drilling the other three in the right place
On the shaft , I have a friend who is a machinest , he is making the shaft & the oversized drive pulley
when i get this stuff back, & everything fits , I will see about having one made for you , I got the 12" aluminum bar stock from McMaster Carr,
for just under 13 bucks less shipping.
On the belt it's from Gates , I will get you the part # 's on it , there is a belt that will replace the twin belts for the
Stock/Factory set-up , The second pic is a U.S. 41 mount pattern , & the third is a Q-35 .
I will keep you posted with pics as i get parts coming in, 51-D GUY

51D Guy
Looks like you assembled yours just like I did, I wonder why I didn't have to drill any holes. My P51 was one of the early kits so I wonder if that explains why I didn't have the extra holes you talked about. It doesn't matter anyway the whole point is that we get these great models built and in the air. I loved the way my Miss flew. Very realistic in the air, solid a smooth. If you've never flown one, your going to love it. There not fast at all at least with the 35 but they sure looked and sounded great in the air.
Enjoy
