RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Hi Casey,
Thanks, I share your enthusiasm on the 109....the detail has to be seen in person to really appreciate all the work that went into these molds. I am very lucky to have obtained them.
I would think a DA-85 or such would be perfect. That snout is a tad narrow, and the DA has less of a "profile". Might fit a bit better.
Too many models, too little time....[:@]

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Hey guys, I'm back at the Hellcat again. After I lost my prototype P-47 a week or so ago I decided to continue on with the Hellcat I started. I got hung up on the flaps, trying to get them to actuate in the scale manner, but after futzing and putzing with the hinges, which I could not get to operate without some binding (not sure why, I tried everything) I decided to take the easy way out and simply hinge the flaps on the lower edge. Not as scale, but a whole lot easier and less hardware involved.

Couple more pics of the flaps. While not totally scale, they give the appearance of "full scale" without the hassle. I think on my next "Cat I will go back to tryiing to figure out the geometry involved so I can get the correct actuation.
At least things are back to moving forward with this build....

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support.
Here is a pic of the wingtip I made a mold for....I just hate the balsa wingtips that seem to attract dents and dings (especially in a large 96 inch wing) This should help keep the tips in good shape.

Okay, here she is on her feet. I just had to do it....and make those airplane noises (nobody was around to hear) She definately looks like a Hellcat. I can just see the Zeros scattering in fear [>:]

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Hey Steve, thanks for the kind words...looks better than that lawn dart of a Jug of mine you helped drag back to the pits, eh?
Geoffrey, you are a hoot...those wheels look as good as that cowl on your La-7
I've got nothing to fly for Monday in Owatonna, but I will probably come down and share "war stories" with the boys.

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Nothing new on the Hellcat since my last post, but I have been busy pulling parts for the Andersen La-7 and Ta-152. I have also finished the mold for the canopy on the La-7, so I will now have that available with the other parts.
Still have to cover the outboard wing panels on the Hellcat with lightweight glass cloth, but she's coming along....

Ram-bro,
The outboard wing panels are complete, and have the panel lines and access hatches in the wing. They looked so good I decided to make molds of them for the outboard wing panels too. So now I will have the complete f/g parts available for this 'Cat. You can decide to build the outboard wing panels from very nice plans drawn by Dave Andersen, or if you prefer, you can opt for the total f\g wing and skip the major wing construction. During the process to produce the molds from the built-up wing panels I lost some detail, so now I'm touching up where things got funky and then it's time for the primer and paint. I decided I would try the www.Warbirdcolors.com because I like the idea of water clean-up.
BTW....How's your buddy Jimmy coming on his P-47?

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
I go over and check out the build. Love the detail got me wanting one of your kits.....like your Hellcat. I see him and his progress but there is so much pre-fab....I cna't tell how he is coming. The detailing is extreme....love it man. Will make for some great weatheringand uglifying. How much are you looking at for the Hellcat kit?

Oh geez, I guess I'm not sure on a price just yet. Cart before the horse and all that.....
Guess it will depend on how much of the building I will have to do, but I'm thinking in the $1,500 range. Less if you build your own outboard wing panels of course.

Okay, I know it's not the best picture, dark and all that, but it was taken in my now-cold dungeon of a shop in my basement......I've got my 'Cat primed and ready for paint. I will be using Sea Blue from Warbirdcolors.com
I just love the nose art. Any guy that would paint "Death and Destruction" on his airplane must certainly have what it takes to be a fighter jock. [>:]

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Thanks guys!
Missed ya at the meeting Steve....the B seemed to be well received.
On the Hellcat, Jeff Q was gracious enough to lend me his ZDZ 80 for the project, and that should be a real winner. Many thanks again there Geoffrey....I owe ya. Maybe the south half of the I-16 cowl....
Just ordered the markings from Callie Graphics, and looking forward to seeing how they come out. Talked to Chuck at Warbirdcolors and he's sending out my Sea Blue. Sure hope to have her dressed up for the next meeting on the 25th.

RE: 1/5 Hybrid Hellcat
Okay, my paint arrived from Warbirdcolors.com and I have to say, it's the nicest paint I've ever worked with! Covers like a blanket, and with the water clean-up, it makes life a ton easier. I hate to clean spray guns with acetone.....
I used one pint, and it was just barely enough. But the high pigment content of the paint allows you to thin with water, and I added about 20 percent water and the bonding agent that makes this paint fuel-proof. Chuck Graves has a wonderful product there and I highly recommend it.
Once my Blue Beast is trimmed out with markings from Callie Graphics, I will attach all the flying surfaces and take some photos.
Now if I can talk my old buddy Jeff Q to giving her the maiden, I should be golden.....
