Barry, EZ connectors are not allowed on control pushrods at my club's field. Dan.

I would not use EZ connectors on any surface of a model of this size.
Tom did you understand what I'm using them for? They are not for anything except to keep the bent 4-40 rod from slipping out of the servo arm. I am not using them for what they are intended for. They are going to be used like a washer and nut on the other side of the servo arm is all. I may end up using a die and cut threads on that side and use a washer and nythread lock nut instead. Z bends are used in all size models. There isn't any slop in my setup. I got the flaps on both side working smoothly and have screwed the hatch covers in place. Darrell called me today and said my gear will be delivered to my door tomorrow. Thats just in time because after the flaps I was done with the center section. The last picture is what I think you thought I was planning on doing. If I tried that I would be have to be crazy!!! Sorry if I confuse all of you.

I use them on my giant scale and have for years with never a failure. I use the heavy duty ones and never the plastic retainers. The metal retainers need cut off to take them apart, they hold that good. Even in crashes, I have never had a pin break on the 4-40 size ones. I don't get why they are getting such a trashing here.

Gary,

Some people only read part of the posts and don't know what is really going to be used for what. I can't blame them but I do wish they would comprehend what I'm writing before they give their opinions. Andy I am going to Toledo for the weekend. Ya wanna come along? I'm leaving Sat morning around 9 and coming back Sunday after the shows over. I wanted to leave Fri morning but business has me stuck here for move ins.

Barry I understand what your doing, I just wouldn't do on my plane. That doesn't look very stout to me. A 4/40 rod isn't a very strong rod. plus the wire rod will get sloppy over time. The 4/40 ball links prevent that.

Looking forward to seeing you Barry. At least one of us (my brother and I) will be hanging around the plane all the times. We have a surprise that will need our vigilance. That is all I will say. Nothing we have talked about.

That 4-40 rod will flex under a load on something that big. You are also depeding on the strength of a non-hardened steel rod that has been bent 90 degrees futher weakening its internal strength. All of the stress is being handled in that 90 degree bend.
If you were using me as an observer to get your overweight certification, I would not sign off with those pushrods. There should be ball link on either end that is bolted to both the servo arm and the control surface horn. If you insist on using the 4-40 rod, it should be sheathed in a properly sized carbon rod to eliminate the flex along with threaded solder connectors and ball links.

Jeff is correct. It is rare I use 4-40 on the big stuff. Typically cut my own threads on 1/8 welding rod (steel or stainless). But, if I do use 4-40, which I did on the 12 foot spit flaps and ailerons, I sheeth in in carbon tube/rod and used DuBro 4-40 swivel balls.

The thing to keep in mind is that the air pressure will be working in compression against that flap rod, so it will bend. I'd feel better if is was used in a tension application.

Me, I always try to rig my flaps so that when deployed the rod is in tension.

I am heeding your advise. I will use a carbon fiber pushrod with a carbon fiber sheath. I will use the carbon fiber tips so I can use a 4-40 ball link on each end. Now I will need to know where to get the CF rods, sheaths, and tips. How about a link please! Also do the tips get epoxied onto the rods or do I need to thread the ends that aren't already threaded where they attach to the servo arm?

Gary,

I don't know now if I will be able to make it to Toledo. I need my friend to come along to share expenses. He said he would let me know today after he gets off work.[&o] I was really looking forward to meeting you and seeing Zombie in person.

OK, I went back to the last page and checked out the link provided for carbon fiber tubes and titanium tips. I included a picture. Now let me get this straight. Your saying carbon fiber tubes and titanium tips attached with JB weld is the way to go? Or are there just solid carbond fiber pushrods that I can JB weld the titanium tips onto? Help me out here. I just want everybody to know I thank you for helping me prevent crashing my baby with your helpful opinions. I do want the flaps to be very strong. I just never used carbon fiber for anything before. I guess I'm to old school oriented.

Barry, Here is the link again.

Here is the Big bird kit. Comes with 16 threaded tips and a two 32" long carbon fiber rods.

these are the stainless couplers. they are a lot cheaper than titanium.

Thanks Kelly,

I am going to get the next kit up which is the same except it has titanium tips. I think stainless steel is to soft don't you agree?

Central Hobbies sells CF pushrod kits with 6-32 fittings on the end. They also sell MK ball links that are for 3mm/6-32 rods. You can also get small heim joints that will work with 6-32.

http://www.centralhobbies.com/contro...e/pushrod.html

look through the larger RC Rock Crawler's hardware. They have lots of heavy duty parts for suspension links and tierods.

Jeff are those still tubes or solid carbon fiber rods? Now I'm getting confused![X(] On AbelRC they sell the tubes for less and they have tips that go over the tube to prevent lateral splintering. The pictures on your link show the tip sliding into the tube which doesn't prevent the lateral splintering. Are these the same? Cuz if they are AbelRC is cheaper for theirs.

I vote for the glass. You put your plans under it and then use thin CA to hold parts down to it. Afterwards a little scrape with a razor blade and it all comes off.

Barry, for this Jeff, I just use hollow carbon fibre tubes over the 4-40 rod. They make a size that slips nicely over 4-40. I cut is so that it butts up snugly to my swivel link.

What are you talking about? I'm way beyond the plans stage and this is a modification and there aren't any plans for it. I don't see where ca has anything to do with pushrods.

Thanks Jeff Q.

My retracts were delivered yesterday but I was to busy to post pictures of them. Here they are setting on the original ribs. I will be removing the original #5 & #6 ribs and replacing them 4 1/4" apart perpindicular to the building surface. I already removed the ribs on the right side and just have the left to go before I use my templates made of balsa to cut the 1/4" aircraft ply ribs that will replace the 1/8" ribs. Then I will use maple or poplar to make the rails for them to be bolted to. They have a 1" diameter strut and 5/16" axle. They measure 11 5/8" from the pivot point to the center of the axle. The wheels will just fit. They are just under 8" in diameter.

Very nice Barry. Talked to Darrel here at Toledo today. He was very busy. He shared his space with Mitch at Down & Locked. I thought that was nice of him. Very cool displays.

Gary,

Darrell was supposed to ship me air line, brass T's, and quick connects. Is there anyway you can get these from him tomorrow for me and ship them? Just let me know how much they are with shipping and I'll send you a money order. I need about 20 feet of air line, 15 brass T's and 8 quick connects. If I wait for Darrell it could be a long time before I get them because he is so busy. I sure wish he hadn't forgot to ship them. If you tell him they are for me he will probably just give them to you and invoice me! Then all you will have to do is pay the shipping which shouldn't be much. Sorry I couldn't make it but we had a medical emergency in the family. My mother in law was rushed to the hospital to prevent a serious stroke. Only to find out she has a terminal disease.[&o] I cut out my 1/4" aircraft ply for my retract ribs and used my newest addition to my shop. Now I don't know how I got by without it. Now I can cut about 1/16" to 3/32" outside the traced line on the parts and boy does it ever take it away fast and leaves a perfectly square or angled edge everytime. I Love it.

Thank You my Friend,

Thank You my Friend,

I have visited with Darrel every day of the show. I'll get your stuff tomorrow, if he still has it at the show.

Question, does it have to be Sierra? I think all these items are available from several suppliers at the show.

Sorry to here about your family problems. Hope she can be made comfortable. Very sad news indeed.

I'll post tomorrow evening and let you know how I made out.

Thank you Gary,
I know what you mean. My mother in law went into congestive heart failure while I was away. She was already at the hospital at the time. Looks like open heart surgery.
I got your air line (20') and disconnects (4 pair) from CJ. He didn't have the Ts on hand. Darrel did, but they were $1 more each. Plus, Bruce from CJ pointed out that he made some with 1 in and 4 out. I thought this might eliminate some connections and make things easier. He will ship them right out to you if you want. Just tell him your the guy Gary Prince got the stuff for a the show.

The stuff I got came to $35.

Hang in there,
Gary
