I'm sure there will be plenty of great pilots lined up to make this happen, but for the record, I'd be honored to take her up for my friend Barry if need be.

I agree. But before she is retired to a museum (great idea by the way, and how about the model museum in Munci, In), SHE MUST FLY!!!!!! At least once. I think Barry would have wanted that also.

your 100% right, that bird needs to fly. From what little I knew Barry, I'm sure he would want it that way...
If any of his home town friends are reading, I would be more then happy to offer any help finishing the corsair.. I can donate some of my weekend if need be, I'm not but an hour south of Janesville...
The model museum would be a fine tribute to all his hard work he has done!

Hello all. I will be going over to catalouge and takepics of all the stuff tomorrow. It is my opinion and the familys that the monster should be completed and flown by someone. there is a 1/8 scale 60 size topflight corsair wich barry completed wich i think would be great as a museum donation .maybe the ama.?
This thread details the monster corsair project barry was working on at his passing. RIP Barry.

Folks, I have picked up Barry's "Monster" Corsair. I have started working on it and it will be my primary winter project. I planned to install a Evolution 7 cyl. radial, but I think the front end is too light duty, and too far along to make much of a mod that I would need....we will see. The other option will be to install my DLE 170.
I plan to make some physical changes back to an AU-1 Corsair and do a Quantico scheme. Barry had plans to do the F4u-7 ("For the French Only"), but I can't do that scheme...ick!
So, I can post updates if anyone is interested, or simply look for it at a flying field near you next year.

Very cool Jeff. Find myself nodding my approval reading over how this bird is in your hands. You are the right man for the job. Will it be much work to change the cowl or other parts? The Quantico scheme will look good.

OK, here we go. I have begun working on the Corsair. I spen 3 entire days sanding, smoothing, filling, smoothing, filling, smoothing and finally glassing teh Corsir fuse. It took a lot of elbow grease given the way it was strip planked, but I finally got it. I also had to replace some of the 1/16 balsa sheeting on the horizontal stab due to warpage. Here are just a few pictures in progress.

Hi Scott, typically I use .55 oz. But, here I am using .75 oz. on the fuse and tail feathers.
Now, the wing has me a bit concerned as the front, main and TE spar are all of lite ply. The kit cutter obviously skimped here, and Barry did not upgrade the main spar to AC ply. With the retract strut relief notch cut into the main spar, it is additionally weakening that already affected area (let alone the lite ply spar). I will plan to beef up that area with structure. However, I will likely use 4 oz cloth on the center section to give it some additional strength.

OK, I have now gotten the fuse, and empennage parts all filled, sanded and smooth. It is all glassed now. With all of the sanding and smoothing of the horizontal stab, required to get it smooth and lump free, the balsa became very thin. To remedy this, I glassed the horizontal with 2.5 oz. cloth, which made it very solid. The plane is shaping up well.I plan to hang the fuse from the ceiling and will devote my time, now to the wing. I am debating on installing teh Evolution 260CC 7 cylinder, or my new DLE 170 twin.

Jeff,
Going back to your comment about the firewall concerns; From the pictures it would appear that you have a good base to beef that area if need be and the radial will have far less vibratory effect / stress on any firewall you end up with than any single or twin two stroke. I would venture a guess you'd be safe no matter which you choose. The radial should fly that plane well all the way up to 70 - 75 lbs.
Good luck with the build....it will be a pleasure to watch you work your magic!
All the best from Florida,
Scott
