Rhinebeck ny WWI fly-in and full size air show sept 11, 12, 13
We left my house in vestal at about 7:30am under cloudy skies and 60 degree temps. Arriving at 10:00 under blue skies and 65 degree temps. The ground was wet which was expected with the amount of rain we had this year, so there were spots that had standing water and some mud but not as bad as it could have been. The parking at Rhinebeck is great! They left as many trees in the lots as they could to provide shade for us very thoughtful. The gate was $25.00 for the weekend if you brought a plane and $20.00 a day if you were just a spectator. They have snack and souvenir shacks and grand stand seating. The grand stand seating is 2x12’s over cinder blocks so while you are sitting there please keep in mind that the 2x12’s get moved and if it overhangs the cinderblock enough on one side some one sitting there could get hurt. I know this should be intuitive but it happen twice while I was there. Luckily the only thing that was hurt was pride!
We walked in through the grandstand protection barriers. This consisted of two rows of 4x4’s about 30inches above the ground parallel to the runway with cables stapled to the tops and a snow fence. The snow fence is right in front of the spectators then heading out two the center of the runway we have the first row of 4x4’s two car widths out and the second row one car width out from there. This is set up so that the row of 4x4’s closest the runway will pull the landing gear out from under the plane the second row stop the plane wit the snow fence protecting the spectators from flying debris. The modelers set up their dinning flies between the snow fence and the closest 4x4 fence and they put their planes on the runway up against the other 4x4 rails fence. The flight stations are pushed out another 20-30ft beyond that. The runway runs north and south so the worst time to fly would be before 11am. We got there right at 10:30 and the pic’s were taken between then and 12:30. there where lines of planes waiting for an open flight station for most of that time so the sky was always full of planes.
All size planes are allowed but only those where the subject was built and flown before 1938 and was not used for combat action in WWII; cub, PT-17, PT-19 all good. AT-6 not allowed because it is made of metal. If I got it wrong correct me please.
The runway stretches north and south and the pilots stand on the west end of the runway facing east. Putting the sun off the pilots right shoulder and in front of him till noon. While the models where flying we had sunny sky’s and it clouded up and got pretty dark by the time of the full size show.

Sorry I missed you Paladin. I usually go over year, but this year my Wife was in the hospital.
The BUSA 1/4 Fokker, in Jasta 10 colors belongs to my buddy Scott. THe FOkker I am nearly done with is nearly its twin, just 10 wrk. no's earlier in the build run.

I hope your wife is oK!
Sorry I missed you also, I'm going to be posting for a while 1900 pic's after two triage's i'll post 700, some of the full size stuff is great. my Rhinebeck planes are a Dynaflite PT-19 with Zenoha G38 power turning a 20x8 prop (bigger than scale) and CJ struts at 13.5#, A GP ARF Cub with a saito 50 for power, and a GP Fokker Dr1 with st g90 for power.
was hoping to make Gilbertsville but it is not to be this year.
My home club is having a war bird event Oct 10, and 11 Chenango bridge ny Chenango Bridge Airport may be we can meet there.
best flying site on the east coast 1700ft grass full size airport with obstacles at both ends 2100ft between them.
I'll have my CMP Zero and hopefully the Macchi but i have allot of work to get the macchi there.
Joe
