Dan,
It seals in the decals and, since there is no pigment, the clear coat gives a smoother finish.
Also, it gives the surface an extra layer for hanger rash: the clear coat gets scratched instead of the paint.
I believe that it's also a little more stain/scuff resistant than the paint.

Dremelboy,
excellent weathering job.
===============
Assembly.
I started with the outer wings putting in the spoilers and using robarts pocket hinges on the flaps and dubro heavy duty hinges on the ailerons using a long piece of piano wire for the aileron hinge pins.
Flaps TE aligned to the inner wing and then ailerons TE aligned to the flaps TE.
pic 1:
Inside of gear doors painted green.
pic 2:
landing lights hand painted light gray.
pic 3-6:
Spoilers painted red and installed.
A long brass wire holds the spoilers 'in place'.
I've seen the spoilers painted black, green and red: I did mine in red so they are easy to see for the 'cool' factor!
pic 7:
Pocket hinges epoxied to outer wing.
pic 8/9:
Ball links used on flaps and flap servo arm.
Pin hinges epoxied into flaps.
excellent weathering job.

Wings (cont)
pic 1-4:
inner wing flaps: pocket hinges and pin hinges epoxied to parts.
(epoxy mixed with microballs to increase viscosity so epoxy stays in hinge area)
One of the flap servo hatch supports broke loose and had to be re-epoxied.

Rudders attached to booms with wires.
Bottom end of wire 'J' bent and put into hole in bottom of boom.
Nav lights also connected up on rudder.

Elevator attached to stab and dual servos installed.

Removable wire used for the pin hinge.

I always keep everything from a kit until it's complete but I can't find the rudder servo covers anywhere.

I'll use some left over mustang covers to make new servo rudder covers.

retracts installed.

Making your own extensions nice since they are always the exact length!

Hi Sam,
Forgive me if it's already answered in the thread....I didn't want to scroll through 18 pages of posts. I noticed your bird has the scale spoilers and the sport scale ailerons. Do you think there will be any problem with this setup? I have seen a few fly with the spoilers and just like the full scale, they are very effective and don't require a large aileron. I just wouldn't want to see it be too aileron sensitive on your maiden with the longer ailerons and the spoilers.
Might not be a factor at all but just wondering if you had any thoughts on it. Sorry if you have already addressed it earlier. Hope to see it out here in August along with your Corsair, Panther, Jug, Spitfire and all of your other planes. Pack em all in that new trailer.
Dave

Dremelboy,
She looks 'mighty fine'.
No time to work on her as all week, I've been PM'ing my planes and trailer for Joe Nall.
I'm figuring my CG will be close as I'm using two heavy G-62's and two large 5000 MA batteries up front.
Post videos.

RE: ZIROLI P-61 BLACK WIDOW BUILD
Assembly
Decals for the F4U haven't arrived yet so I started back on the P-61.
Everything has to be tested from the receivers so the receiver tray was first installed over the center wing. Two JR power safe receivers will be used. Initially, I was going to use 3K ma battery packs but using four will take up a lot of room so I'm opting for 2700 ma packs as they are going in the nose for weight.
pic 1:
Put a flat spot on the nose wheel shaft where the steering arm set screw is located.
pic 2:
Service tray on center wing.
Supports epoxied to wing but tray has six hex head servo screws.
pic 3:
two power safe receivers, UP-3 (gear/door) and UP-6(brakes) dry fitted on tray.
pic 4:
Holes drilled in formers to run wires to the nose.
The nose will be the access for switches/air/etc.
pic 5:
Nose gear steering servo (hs-645) mounted.
pic 6:
extra tray glued to nose to hold the batteries.
pic 7:
Decals finally arrived.
These look like dry transfer (still have to read the instructions).
One set for the F4U, one for the P-47 and two generic sheets.
pic 8:
One of the generic sheets will be used on the P-61.

Got a few things done today:
A storm destroyed my two pop up canopies so I cannibalized one to fix the other (should have taken the covers off them at night!).
Control panel.
pic 1:
Four battery packs strapped into the nose.
pic 2:
Counter clock wise:
brake fill/pressure gauge
gear/door fill/pressure gauge
two on/off switches for two receivers
landing light switch
nav light switch
battery check switch (behind nav light switch)
four charging jacks.

RE: ZIROLI P-61 BLACK WIDOW BUILD
Sam thats the pefect spot for batteries - your CG should come in real close.
I did the same thing and still had to add some led. The led compensated for the 2 elevator servos which I also moved into the horizontal stab vs. trying to manage a long control rods and linkages.
Nice layout for the switches etc...
