RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
Not sure yet on the scheme. How about almost black with gray camo and a sharks mouth! I heard there was one for some reason. I haven't found a picture of it yet. Anybody ever hear of it?

I framed up the rudder and am waiting for the glue on the sheets to dry so it can be sheeted. After the fins sheeted I'll epoxy in the stab and fin. Right now they are just dry fitted. While I wait I'm going to plank the window fillets.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
I finished planking one side of the window fillet and ran out of pins. I'll sheet the fin and start on the other side tomorrow. Plus more wood arrived today so the build continues. Now I sure need the retracts from Darrell. I'll call him Monday.

I drew a template by tracing over the side view of the fuse plan sheet and then rough cut and sanded the first window. It looks ok but will need to be modified for the sheeting to fit. I didn't want to go to small and have a gap to fill with scrap balsa. Here are some pic's. I'm going to plank the other window now and if I have enough time sheet the fin.

The second window is planked and is drying overnight. Then I'll use the same template and cut and sand it. I didn't get to the gluing of the fin sheeting but the skins are cut ready for glue.

Jerry where did you get them? They are cool. I would love to have the badge.[X(]
I finished up the windows and sheeted one side of the fin. I'll do the other side and then get to work on sheeting the top of the fuse.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
I finished the fin and also beefed up the engine compartment with 1/4"x3/8" hardwood instead of the 1/4" balsa triangular stock the plans called for. Once the top of the fuse is sheeted and I can flip it over I'll add additiona hardwood stringers to the bottom of the engine compartment. I will have to get it off the uprights to see where the firewall will need to be for the engine to fit the cowl. Darrell emailed me today and wrote that my retracts were being finished up and will be shipped as soon as they are finished. Thats good because I really can't go to much farther without them. I will need the TW retract so I can fit it to the tail and the mains so I can build the wing around them. They are a lot different from the Robart retracts so all the plumbing will need to be modified.

I finished shaping the window areas and will take a wack at sheeting around them as shown on Ziroli's one page instructions on the whole build. 8 pictures and about 50 words for the whole thing. Not like the Corsair manual.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
Thanks LDM,
I sheeted the area around one of the windows today but it was such a pain it took me all day to get it right so the window would fit. And then I had to use putty to fill gaps so I decline on posting pictures until it is anded smooth. I hope the other side goes quicker. At least now I made a template to cut the balsa sheeting with. It took me two 1/8"x4"x48" pieces of balsa glued together to finally get it right. The piece is 12.5" and I only got three tries. Now I have to waste another two sheets.

I'm finished with the first window and now it's time to take a break from building for a day to get ready to mess with tackling the second one. I had to add a little putty as stated in the previous post but after sanding it smooth it came out the best I can do. I placed the window over the area and see where I need to trace it's outline and cut in a groove about 1/16" to allow the window to ly flush with the rest of the fuse.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
Since I already had the paper template for the window I already did I decided to do the other side. It took less than 30 minutes compared to all day. After looking at that ugly gray heavy putty I decided to remove it and use a lightwight wood putty. Luckily even after sitting overnight I was able to just did it out with my knife. That gray putty takes forever to cure. I thought it was sanded smooth but it was only the top skim coat I was sanding. I also started to plank the top. Ziroli says to plank the top/bottom and sheet the sides. The top will go fast and then I can start to button up the fuse sheeting. I want to get it off the uprights so I can get busy building the wing. This baby has to be ready to fly by May!!! Does anybody know how much of the engine box needs to be cut off to accomidate the G-62? I could use the help.

I finished planking the top and sanded it all nice and smooth. Now I'm thinking of where I want the air tank and fuel tank. I also have decided to try to hide the control linkages for a more scale look.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
Due to wanting to get this P-40 in the air I opted to take the easy and safe way out so I'm using 4-40 pushrods. I've got the elevator pushrod in and have the top of one side of the rear end sheeted. I'll do the other side tomorrow and hopefully get a sheet from the nose to the tale done so I can take it off the uprights. I found an old Robart tank that I've never used because I dropped it and it slightly bent the air inlet. I did a water test at 140 lbs and there weren't any bubbles. After 4 hours the gauge still was reading 140 so I'm going to use it. I have decide to put the tank directly behind the cockpit up between the window. I will dremel out a hole in former F-9T and make a brace for the rear of the tank. I also added a picture of the way I sand wing and stab sadldles. They come out rel nice everytime. This one needs a bit more sanding.

Still sheeting. Hope to get the sides done tomorrow. Using wood glue make it a long process but very easy to sand. I'm hoping sanding as I go it will be ready for glass as soon as I'm finished sheeting it. I demeled away the rear upright on each side so I could sheet all the way down the sides.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
I finally got a sheet running the length of the fuse. It's in the ugly stage right now with the clamps and putty on it but it shold be very smooth by morning. I only use wood glue for sheeting so it take extra time. Plus this is the first warbird I've sheeted instead of planking so I have been filling small seams with putty. I'm better at planking then sheeting. Tomorrow I'll do the other side and the turtle deck so I can flip it over and get rid of the uprights. I need to run the pushrods and epoxy in the servo tray and air tank.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
I received my main retracts from Darrell Tenny at Seirra today and they are a absolut work of art. The man is an artist. I am waiting on the TW retract that wasn't sent by mistake but at lease if I get the other side of the fuse sheeted down to the same place I will still have room to work to modify it for the horizontally mounted TW retract. Here are the after putty pictures of the first side of the sheeting and the retracts.

I finished up the top sheeting and tried the cowl on for size. It really is starting to resemble a P-40. I will either mess with the engine position now or start the wing build.

RE: Gibbs Ziroli 94
Boy I must of really ticked off some people. Seems like I've been black balled. Well I'll just keep posting for those still interested. Although it was nice to get expert advice now and then. I'm going to start on the wing now. I am waiting on drawings from a builder on RCSB for the stab, fin, elevators, and rudder mods. So I cut the new parts and will build all new tail feathers when I get the drawings.
