Dean RCU,
How do you build your langing gear doors?

Dean RCU,
How do you build your langing gear doors?
Boyd
Hi Boyd, After the bottom wing sheeting is done trace the doors onto the sheeting with a fine black marker. As I remember the outline for the doors was on Daves plans which makes it easy to cut them out and lay them on the wing to trace. flip them over for the other wing. Once you have them traced get some monocoat that you can see through( I use the clear) iron it on the area where the doors are adding about two inches around the edges. Then I cut 4 pieces of 5 oz. glass and a piece of 1 oz large enough to cover the door area with about an inch extra all around. Brush some epoxie reson on the monocoat and add your first piece on 5 oz. glass. Soake each piece as you add them on finishing with the 1 oz. piece. You will be able to see the outline of the traceing you did. After it has cured trace the doors on the glass lift the glass from the wing and get rid of the monocoat. Cut the doors out carefully and lay them on your wing tracings using some double face tape so they don;t move. Cut around them with a sharp exacto. Now you have a door which will fit snugly and with the shape of the wing, I did the dive brakes in the same manner.

The product Igot was from a auto paint store. It's called Sea-Glass by Evercoat. I looked it up on the internet and found out it's a 6oz cloth. 5 layers ought to do it. Plus the 1 oz at the end. Thanks so much.

Here are the completed cut and sanded doors. I made 3 sets just in case. By the way, I made mine a 2 piece set rather than the 3 piece set. For me it would have been to complicated to do the 3 piece set.

RE: T-28 Dave Platt
I made a gross miscalculation regarding my decision tobuy the Robart 85 degree main retracts. I found a sight that recomended the 90 degree (635RSLP)Robart gear. The following pictures show how I corrected this mistake. I was not going to do a major rebuild to correct this problem, so will live with my mistake.
Sierra Giant Scale now puts out a 1/6th scale retract set for the Dave Platt T-28. This set also has the correct angles for the gear. When I build a 2nd T-28, I'll purchase this set. I had already bought the Robart gear prior to Sierra comming out with theirs.
Another thought might be the construction of the belly pan. Maybe it's not deep enough. I will be anxious to hear from anyone else who may have an idea as to what went wrong.

Ok guy's
I think I figured this out. I based my gear on the dihedral of the wing relative to a horizontal plain In other words, the dihedral is at 85 degrees to the horizontal plain.
I measured the degrees ofthe gear in the retracted position from the frontal position of the wing according to theplansand found that it was at 90 degrees. The difference of 5 dgrees makes the gear set lower into the wheel well.
redtail, are you a geometry teacher? This is a geometry problem.
Any thoughts?

The following will show how I made the engine mount and mounting plate for the cowl.
PRIOR TO DRILLING THE HOLES ON THE FIREWALL TO MOUNT THE ENGINE MOUNTING BACK PLATE, MAKE SURE THE COWL AND CENTER LINE OF ENGINE THRUST ARE ALIGNED. I PUT THE ENGINE IN PLACE AND THE COWL IN PLACE AND MOVE THE ENGINE MOUNT ACCORDINGLY.

Hey Boyd,
Very nice, but I do have a question. How are you going to mount the cowl to the fuse? The ring you made for the back of the cowl doesn't look deep enough to screw into the blocks. But excellent work non the less
BTW, order is going out for the kit by end of week and should have the gear by April
Talk soon

Larry,
I used a 1/4" ply back. It fits, and don't anticipate any problems. By the way, did you get my e-mail regarding sending you the disk. I was asking for your home address to send it to.
Boyd.

By the time most of you recieve my build with pictures, I have already completed certain portions of the project.
If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to let me know of another way or a better way to do things. This is how I can learn for further projects, or, I may be able to change something prior to final completion.
