Well, Roy Brown and Taffy Mays, and the Australian gunners on the ground, all said it was red; so I'm going to guess it was green. Thanks; Ernie P.

Which Dr.1? He flew several.

102/17, which was one of his first, was the typical Fokker green streak paint with the white tail and older style Maltese Crosses which were being phased out around that time.

Or green, depends who you read.

Here is a "colorized" image said to be taken on the day he died, but it has the older style Cross Pattée markings and is suspect.

von Richthofen Memorabilia

In a separate area, adjacent to a diorama of Manfred von Richthofen's crashed Fokker Triplane, is a display of the actual fabric cross, cut from the starboard side of his famous red Triplane. With it are other items salvaged from the aircraft and his own monogrammed handkerchief.

Arranged in front of a photograph of Manfred's room at his family home, are other objects belonging to the Richthofens, including father Albrecht's dress uniform, the trophy awarded to brother Lothar on being credited with downing Albert Ball and two of the trophy cups Manfred had made to mark his victories. One of these is number 11, commissioned after Manfred fought his famous aerial battle with Britain's then most highly respected Ace, Lanoe Hawker.

A patch of fabric in an Austrailan Museum from a red triplanesaid to be The One (like all the pieces of The True Cross in Europe - we'lllikely never know in thislife).

Always need images &Specs. It deserves recognition.

The D.XXI was a monoplane fighter with fixed landing gear, in itself nothing new for Fokker. The D.XXI had an enclosed cockpit and cantilever main wheel struts. Despite inherent obsolesence, the type had considerable success in Finland, but the 39 Dutch D.XXIs had little luck in May 1940. Finland license-built over 140, Denmark 10. Plans to build it in Spain were halted by the falangist victory in the civil war.

The Fokker D.XXI (D.21) fighter was designed in 1935 for use by the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) air service. As such it was designed as a cheap but rugged small plane, which had respectable performance for the time of conception.

Although the order by the KNIL was cancelled, the Royal Netherlands Air Force (KLu) placed an order of 36 which were all delivered in time to participate in the war against the Germans in May 1940. The Fokker D.XXI, although much slower and lighter armed than the ME 109, performed surprisingly well in dogfights, due to its good manoeverability. Nonetheless, the numerical disparity between the KLu and the Luftwaffe meant that all Dutch Fokker D.XXI fighters were destroyed during the war.

The Fokker D.XXI performed much longer and better in the Finnish Air Force which had acquired a number of these fighters prior to the start of the Winter War. Against the planes of the Soviet Air Force the Fokker was more evenly matched and its rugged design with a radial engine and fixed undercarriage made it very suitable for Finnish conditions. Later in the war, as newer models of Soviet fighters appeared, the Fokker D.XXI was too underpowered and lightly armed (with only four .30 caliber machine guns) to compete.

Type: Fokker D.XXI

Ok. Here's one that's moderately tough.

Designed and built in the USA, but never used by the USA military of any branch. It was tested but rejected because it was very difficult to land.

Some were destined to be flown by Americans not in the US Military against the Japanese but the entire flight was lost in a fog and crashed during transit!

Climb rate was better than a A6M Zero but other characteristics very similar! (though it lacked the Zero's 20mm cannon)

In service within a single squadron of the one country who had a quantity incombat readyness most, unfortunately, were destroyed on the ground within months after thePearl Harbor attack though they did claim four air combat victories in the brief fighting before they were overwhelmed.

And here's a three view.

Oooo.  Very, very good.  Direct hit with the first salvo.

Almost used by the AVG (Flying Tigers, Hell's Angels, et al).  Used by the Dutch East Indies . . . briefly.

.

Thanks Charlie...

But since my most recent question was just a quick improv...I will do like Ernie did and pass the Baton to anyone that has a question ready...

BTW, I think they also used a few of the CW 21's in a movie or two, during the war, to simulate your typical Japanese "Zero" or "Nakajima" or etc. etc.

I just posted in P-40K-5's thread on the P-40, about a friend and the packet of info and drawings he got (as a kid ) from Curtiss, back in the 60's...
There was a few sheets (drawings ) of the CW 21 in there...(what a coincidence )

Next question is up for grabs...anyone got one?
Go for it...[sm=thumbup.gif]
