Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Not exactly the answer I was looking for.
This occurred in the European Theater.
It was not between 2 heavy metal aircraft or planes normally thought of as fighters.
The losing aircraft was not destroyed.
Sorry EM for butting in.

The Storch was also the last German aircraft shot down in air combat on the Western Front, on the morning of V-E Day. Lieutenants Duane Francies and William Martin, flying a Piper L-4 Cub for the 5th US Army Division, spotted a Storch circling below them. They immediately dove on the airplane and opened fire with their Colt .45s, with the result that the Storch made a emergency landing with its engine hit. The Americans landed their Cub and - following a short gun battle - captured the two Germans. Observer Martin won the Air Medal for his role, but pilot Duane Francies had to wait 22 years until the story was told in Cornelius Ryan's book, "The Last Battle," before he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. While it was the last Luftwaffe plane lost on the western front, this Storch was also the only German plane shot down by pistol fire during the Second World War
And they say the Cub wasn't a true warbird

Nope, other rounds have featured this before.

Are we talking just about the round or, some way it has been used (battles, effectiveness on certain targets)?
DU isn't unique, nor is the plastic banded projectile. The aluminum shell casing isn't unique either. Well, I'm stumped.
Could it be the mix of uranium?

PGU-14/B API Armor Piercing Incendiary [DU] 30mm Ammunition
The 30mm x 173 GAU-8/A ammunition was among the most effective
ammunition used in Operation Desert Storm with proven performance
against all targets, including tanks, armored and light vehicles. The
30mm lightweight family of ammunition was developed to optimize the
air-to-ground mission of the U.S. Army AH-64 Apache helicopter. This
ammunition family is also compatible with all 30mm x 113 gun systems.
The PGU-14/B API Armor Piercing Incendiary round has a lightweight body
which contains a sub-calibre high density penetrator of Depleted Uranium
(DU). In addition to its penetrating capability DU is a natural
pyrophoric material which enhances the incendiary effects. Depleted
uranium results from the enriching of natural uranium for use in nuclear
reactors. Natural uranium is a slightly radioactive metal that is
present in most rocks and soils as well as in many rivers and sea water.
Natural uranium consists primarily of a mixture of two isotopes (forms)
of uranium, Uranium-235 (U235) and Uranium-238 (U238), in the proportion
of about 0.7 and 99.3 percent, respectively. Nuclear reactors require
U235 to produce energy, therefore, the natural uranium has to be
enriched to obtain the isotope U235 by removing a large part of the
U238. Uranium-238 becomes DU, which is 0.7 times as radioactive as
natural uranium. . Since DU has a half-life of 4.5 billion years, there
is very little decay of those DU materials. When manufactured as 30mm
rounds, each DU projectile contains approximately 4,650 grains [0.66
pounds (lbs)] of extruded DU, alloyed with 0.75 weight percent titanium.
The projectile is encased in a 0.8 mm-thick aluminum shell as the final
DU round.

Dave,
You got it. Your info is a little bit more thorough than mine. I find that light aircraft such as the L-4 and Storch to be just as interesting as the larger, and heavier fighters and bombers.
As I entered a question in the absence of Evil, perhaps you could wait with your question until after Evils question is answered.

Proptop; I just noticed I hadn't responded to this. I thought I had done so. No; not saying you wait on the easy ones. You've led the rest of us out of the wilderness too many times to think that. I'm just saying an easy question isn't going to last long with you around. (-: There are several people posting here that are hard to stump. You're one of them. Thanks; Ernie P.

Ernie...you make it sound like I wait to pounce on the ''easy'' ones... but it's just a matter of stumbling on one that I happen to know...and I happen to be the first one to see it, I guess...?

I'm here...
No one has answered correctly yet.
Look at why the round was created... and what fires it.

The only "banded" DU round I have found is the one used with the Phalanx system. Thanks; Ernie P.
Mark 149 Mod 2 20mm ammunition
The United States Navy's Phalanx CIWS's M61 Vulcan Gatling gun used 20 mm armor-piercing penetrator rounds with discarding plastic sabots which were made using depleted uranium, later changed to tungsten.

Just a reminder guys,
keep the time frame in the 24hr limit. That also includes hints and suggestions for the question from the questioner. This thread runs pretty smooth for only 3 rules. Just little hiccups.
Alright have fun!!

Is it either (1) A Squeeze Bore or (2) A Proof round? Thanks; Ernie P.
Maybe we can, with a few answers, start narrowing this down a bit. (1) Was this round fired from an aircraft. Or, (2) Was it perhaps designed to be fired at aircraft and incoming missiles?
