The supply of aluminum needed to make reliable cylinders?

I take that back, reading the above post...

Most magneto's used by the British were actually of German manufacture. When the war started they had a supply that was quickly consumed. The British managed to get a supply of magneto's from the us (Dixie) but never got them in large numbers. They were hurting until they were able to salavage a newer Bosch magneto from a crashed zeppelin which the Brits then copied using domestic materials.
Right on the money. Until the start of WWI, Britain imported almost all their magnetos from Germany. Surprise to say, the Germans stopped selling them when the war started. So, the Brits were in dire straits for a while. You're up Evil_Merlin. I've got lots of questions, so let's keep this thread rolling. Thanks; Ernie P.

Evil_Merlin, you're up. 24 hour rule for the next question, and the clock is ticking. You usually have some good questions, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you have for us. Thanks; Ernie P.

Question Time:

The Germans had well known issues with landing aircraft post 1940.

1.) What was the main reason they had so many issues?
2.) What was one of the more successful ways to resolve the main issue?

.......What was the main reason they had so many issues?
Landing areas had bomb craters & allied aircraft used to wait for German A/C to enter the landing patter to pounce on them
What was one of the more successful ways to resolve the main issue?
Use autobons as runways....

last guess.... Narrow tracking(109) of landing gear caused problems for novice pilots
Building of a/c with Wider tracking ( 190)

thats a good question.
short runways combined with a lack of braking power perhaps..
fixed the problem by building longer runways and better brakes..

Narrow landing gear/short field runways
Developing additional landing/braking flaps

Narrow landing gear, large heavy power plants up front made ground handling horrible

Fixed by widening gear and increasing gear height to compensate for heavier powerplants forward?

The Fw 190, Me 262, He 163, Do 335 were fine to handle on the ground. But they too suffered when it came to this rather serious weakness that the Germand dumped a lot of time into trying to resolve.

Read the orginal question, its not about ground handling, its actually about getting the planes on the ground that gave the Germans fits later in the war. And it has nothing to do with getting attacked or shot down.

only other thing I can think of was lateral control problems. andwith that came the introductionof wing slats.

Nope, nothing to do with the wings or engines, props or cockpit... or other Germans on the ground.

Think supply chain.

The Germans started using a fixed "tall" tailwheel to alleviate their ground handling problems. And, they started using larger wheels and tires. Thanks; Ernie P.

Getting further away from the answer there Ernie. P-40D has gotten the closest so far!

Question Time:

The Germans had well known issues with landing aircraft post 1940.

1.) What was the main reason they had so many issues?
2.) What was one of the more successful ways to resolve the main issue?
1. They were more and more often operating off short, rough, improvised landing fields.

2. They developed low pressure tires to handle the rough surfaces encountered.

Thanks; Ernie P.
