Good one johnny S. There are some good flying and landing on water videos of a Duck on the old "Ba Ba Balck Sheep" series. Back in the early seventies I saw a guy, Paul Mantz I believe it was, roll one at the Reno Air Race. He started out at about 8500 AGL, must have put in full aileron and rudder and it took forever to finish the roll and about 4500 feet loss of altitude, and full power I believe. WoW ! Must have been a hell of a ride! What an airplane. wallace.tharp

OK I have one . With the wealth of knowlage here I don't think this will last too long , but here goes.
Looking for an aircraft componet/system of a certen manufacture and mark.
1. I was first designed in the early '30s , all through the war years I was refined untill the early '50s when production was stopped. I am still being refined today
2. I was designed / developed in one place but major production was in several shadowy places.

3. Although many associate me with fighters , many more were made for bombers and later transports
4. One of the gentlemen involved in my present refinements / uses, is better known for hats and checkered flags.

No , not the variiable speed prop
I didn't think this would last this long. Kinda dancing around the edges with the questions though.

5. Long thought of as a national icon ,I am still, to this day, at the top of my class.
6. After the end of the war I wound up in some odd places , one of them being in the planes of my former enemies.

OK, here's a person.
1. He was a fighter pilot who had great success, but he and the members of his flight were not recognized as well as their peers in another service in the same nation.
2. The enemy did indeed recognize the success of this flight, and eventually they copied some of their equipment and practices.
3. He was once lost in a fog and landed by mistake at an enemy aerodrome. When he saw the enemy markings on the parked aircraft, he quickly took off and escaped.
4. The terminal in the airport of the city of his birth is named in his honour.
