RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
Okay, guys; I don't want to jam things up too long. The *key* hint is below.
What was the first fighter aircraft to fly using liquid rocket power?
Hint: Read the question.
Hint 2: Read the question again.
Hint 3: Read the question again.
Hint 4: Look for a fighter type modified to carry a liquid fueled rocket motor. It was a test bed, to test the engine; and prove the concept of an impulse engine would work.
Thanks; Ernie P.

You did not state manned or unmanned, does not neccessarily have to be manned to be a fighter, and what is "power" fuel, propellant, gasoline, etc. In other words is thisdefinitive or your interpretation. Gasolinewas used as a propellant for rockets in early years so the Fokker E1 monoplane could have been the firstpure fighter to have been powered by "rocket power".

RE: Knowledge Quiz for Warbird wiz
yah well some idiot strapped a couple of VTOL rockers to a 67 Impala.. but that dosn't mean it'll
go to the moon.
I assumed 'operational' 'flew in combat' & and engaged in combat.. not one off things.

As of 2010, it remains the only rocket-powered fighter aircraft to have ever been operational

He-112 may have been the first fighter, there was a trainer also He-72
He-112 may have been the first fighter, there was a trainer also He-72
For all the rest of you: Go to Wikipedia. Type in He-176; as several of you obviously did. It will tell you the He-176 was the first plane to fly as a solely rocket powered aircraft, in 1939. Only Hitler's moratorium on any aircraft that could not be ready for production in one year prevented Heinkel from continuing development of this promising fighter prototype.
But, if you scroll down a page or two; it will tell you two He-112 fighters were modified to carry a prototype rocket engine, to test the theory that a plane could fly under rocket power. Remember, this had never been done before; and some people didn't believe a rocket plane would be able to fly without tumbling through the air.
Click on the "He-112" link and you will find the history of the Heinkel He-112 fighter. Scroll down a few pages and you will find reference to the "He-112R". It will describe how a standard He-112 airframe was modified to carry a liquid rocket engine. The plane took off using its piston engine, climbed to altitude, shut off the piston engine, ignited the rocket engine, and flew under rocket power. The plane landed with the gear up and on fire. But it proved a rocket power aircraft could actually fly. And that had never been done before. It was a fighter aircraft; and it flew using liquid rocket power. Question answered.
As I said; for those who don't know the history, it might be interesting.

I always thought it was an RC B-24 he was killed in. I guess I will have to up-date my brain on that one.

I believe its Joe Kennedy, he and an enlisted man Wilford Willy were killed in an radio controlled PB4Y (Naval ver.) of a B 24.
When the plane was armed it blew up . (At this time an a/c was loaded with explosives and was required to be flown near the target, then the crew would parachute ,with the controlling aircraft(B 17) left to guide it to the target .
