Default 3 Giant Warbird Builds 1-P-40 2-Corsairs

To allow mre time to build and get these planes that have been sitting partially done I have decided to make one build thread for all 3. Primary build is the Ziroli Giant 96" P-40. Then I will divide up the rest of my time on my 125" Ziroli F4U-5N Corsair and my TF GS 86.5" F4U-7 Corsair. I have been working on getting the LE finish sanded so the wing fits properly. I installed the retract air lines and mechanicals in the 125" Monster Corsair. I completed the main framing of the center section on the TF Giant Corsair. Here are the stages they are in now.

Barry

To follow the steps before now refer to the 3 previous build threads I have on this forum!!!

That's too funny Rambro.

Of course I shouldn't laugh. I'm in the same boat with a DS B-29, Ziroli B-25 and a TF GS P-51 all going on at the same time.
And if that's not enough, I'll be starting a 1/4 scale DVII build at EAA this year. [sm=50_50.gif]

Too many planes to build and not enough time. Oh well, they get done when they get done.

NCIS, your doing a great job. Keep em going

R/C Airplane problem? What R/C Airplane problem?

Maybe thats why I've been divorced 3 thimes![X(] Did a bit more on the TF GS Corsair. I always love trying to line up the dowel holes with a pin from the back method so you can drill it from the front. How many times do you get the pin to go straight and level. I don't have a laser lever drill that tell me if it's going perfectly straight either. I always end up rounding out the front LE holes and leaving the rear holes where they are and after lining things up I then just using microballoons and epoxy to fill the void around the LE dowel.

I dont feel so bad now. I got four running concurrently but they're all smaller than ya'lls.

Hmm, balsa dust ice cream. Wonder what that would taste like.

People sitting around in chairs, back in the churches meeting room.

One guy rises out of his chair and mumbles:"Hi- my name is Barry and I'm a Balsa and ply addict." The round reply:"Hi Barry" The meeting starts sponsored by Hobby Lobby.

I have three shops. Two in the garage which I consider one and two in the basement in seperate rooms. I still wish my mother in law would move out so I could have the whole basement. I have a three car garage so that helps alot. Plus we park our cars outside so the balsa dust dosen't get on them. I set the wing on the Z P-40 today and aligned it so tomorrow I can drill and tap it for the wing hold down bolts. How many prefer stainless steel bolts with blind nuts to back up the hard maple? Give me some remarks on this one Please.

Well,
stainless steel bolts - the expensive way, no need for that you never reach the strength of a regular steel Allen head bolt.

Blind nuts - the cheap way, I use brass barrel inserts - not cheap but they are self locking under pull with regular steel bolts.

More important is you use alignment pins (in case you use the four bolt method). As more you can shift the wing back and forth, as more stress you put on your fastening method.

Blind nuts are for cheapo furniture and small ARF's - IMOO they don't belong in the giant warbird builds.

Here are my shops as someone was wondering where I find the space. I have plenty of it for now but what if I want to start another build or two? I finally got the LE sanded correctly so the wing would fit right. I thought it was good enough yesterday but after sleeping on it I gave it some more attention. The wing is now bolted to the fuse and I just used bolts into the hard maple. The way they tightened I think they are there to stay. Now I need to epoxy on the tail feathers and plank the fillets and around the fin needs attention to flow smoothly. Sorry for all the pictures but this one is getting close to the fun part. I am just a month past my deadline and I think I can have it finished in time to fly before the snow flies.

More! It's hot but the 98% humidity is killing me. I need to work in the house shops more and do some on the TF GS Corsair in the A/C! I don't see how you builders manage down south in that heat and humidity.

Consider yourself lucky! If my wife discovers I'm in the garage, she is nagging me within 5 minutes. Good luck on the builds, at least I can enjoy seeing other airplanes getting built!

Today the stab was set and epoxied in place on the Z P-40. Tomorrow the fin. When I get that done and fillets I'll post pictures of the progress. I also got my plywood order from BUSA for the P-40 flaps and the Z 125" Corsair engine box cover and bottom. I'll spend time on both and see how far I get. I also need to go to Home Depot and buy some insulation board so I can build the TF GS Corsair wing tip panels.

The fin is epoxied on the Z P-40 and I cut the top of the 125" Z Corsair engine box. I also put my first layer of glass on my cowl plug. When done glassing and filling I'll add the foam nose and cover it with resin.

Today I apent mostly putting a second layer of thick glass cloth on my cowl plug for the Z Corsair and the rest of the time finish sanding the tail feathers. I still nee to get the top tip of the rudder sanded to a narrow shape but other than that they are done. I will go get some insulation board tomorrow so I can spend some time building the wing tip panels on the TF GS Corsair.

I finish sanded the rudder and fin on the Z P-40 so they are thin like the full scale bird. As you look at the frontal shot of the fin you can see that I build in right thrust also. I always do this on the Giant scale Warbirds. I also am sanding and will start filling the cowl plug for the Monster Z Corsair today.

I thought the Giant corsair had a twisted fuse. Did you get everything squared away?

Winc,

This isn't even the same Corsair. I scraped that one and blew up a Ziroli set of Corsair plans 33.3% which is giving me a 125" wingspan. It would be less but I'm spacing the ribs apart a little to get more wing area for wing load. I started this build last year and it took forever to get it modified to be a F4U-5N instead of the F4U-1D. The cowl on this Monster is 4' in circumfrence at the firewall. I hope to put a 400 14 cylinder radial producing 27 HP in it. Right now I'm still making the plug for the cowl. I already have to canopies for it.

I have been busy on the Monster Corsair's cowl plug. I have a bit more to go but I'm getting tired of it so when I get the nose done and get it primed I'm going back to work on the P-40 until it's all ready for glass. Then I'll make the cowl mold with the plug. I'll glass the P-40 when I get the mold done and am laying glass for the cowl. That means it will be awhile before it's glassed. The 4 piece mold for the Corsair cowl will take some time. I will be using Ultracal 30 for the mold. I still need to put the last piece of 2" nose foam on and round it out. I'll cut out the center on my scroll saw and then build up the inside with foam until there is just a 1/2" lip going back at the engine.

Barry

I put 2 oz. cloth on the sides of the foam so when I sand the next piece it won't distort the first piece of foam. I'll also cover it with green frog tape to make sure.
