Default ADF size/shape

[img]On many planes in the 1930's and 1940, an instrument called the Automatic Direction Finder was housed in a black tear-dropped shaped device mounted on either the bottom of the plane (B-25) or on the top (AT-6). As the war and time progressed, these got smaller and smaller and soon were only a 'bump' in the fuselage.

I'd like to see a side view of an AT-6 Texan with one of those mounted behind the canopy as I would like to get its location, size and shape to add to my plane.

I scratched one out of balsa but it was too small when compared to the plane (see picture). I'd like to make one closer to the scale size of the full-sized airplane.

Any takers? TIA

Jerry

I can help you out Jerry as I just finished up an ADF "football" for my Midwest Texan a month or so ago. Send me an email at the addy below and I will send you a scale drawing and some pictures. If your T-6 is anwhere near the same size as the Midwest (1/6) I can vac form one up for you even.

Jerry,

Thanks for the kind remarks! I will be putting a 1.60FX in the Texan which should do the job nicely. I got your email and the Midwest Texan is also 81 inches so my ADF antenna should be perfect for your airplane. Now that I've offered to make one of you I sure hope I didn't throw out the plug! [X(] I'll have a look around the shop tomorrow and let you know.

I think you should sell them The plug that is, not the engine

I plan on using an Evolution 120 2-stroker on mine - check out the 'new' pilot... the old gray man is going to be smoking a ciggy

Looks good Jerry, 'cept the young guy is a bit too shiny! I will look forward to putting up my Texan with yours for some "formation" at the next 1/8 Air Force event. I am trying to get my Hellcat painted and then I plan to do the engine, radio, equipment installations for both it and the Texan at the same time. Hope to have them both flying by September.

The "Old guy" was the same as the young guy..who will also age some Did you know Seagull has 48 different pilots? So why do they send two of the same in the ARF? Looking forward to completing this ARF...not going to place decals like the box top - this plane can't make up its mind if it is a warbird or a Reno racer....I'll go with the warbird

Go figure Jerry! Some times you have to figure they just don't think things through very well.

Thanks IL2! Here is a picture of my inspiration. Unfortunately this restored Harvard was involved in a fatal accident and is no more.

Jerry,

I found the plug for the ADF football and will vacuum form one for you ASAP. I'm right in the middle of moving so it may be a week or so before I have it ready for you.

We are staying right out here in the same area Jerry (Avondale/Litchfield Park). I've had a couple of people tell me they have seen guys flying out at Cotton/I-10. I'm surprised I have not seen them myself as my brother lives just a mile west of there and I'm going to and from his house all the time.

Thanks for the offer Jerry but much of my family as well as my wife's family are located right in this general vicinity so I should have all the help (and trucks) that I need. I certainly appreciate your generosity in offering though! I'll send you a private email as soon as I have the ADF made and we can arrange to get it to you. Stay tuned...

All moved Jerry and getting settled into the new place. I should be able to get your ADF made this coming week. We got plently of wind and rain but had one heck of a morning and spent about 4 hours out at the flying field today. Best day of flying in a long time!

Your ADF is basically done Jerry. Need to know how you want to go about getting it. You're welcome to come on over or I can ship it to you.
