<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial">It&rsquo;s been a while since I last posted, the assembly of the 50cc ESM Spitfire is almost complete.I changed my mind from installing a G62 and purchased the new DLE 55RA, anice engine and should fit very nicely within the cowl, especially havingrear exhaust.

I have run into a problem with installing the engine mount cylinder, its too large in diameter to fit into the fuselage; it&rsquo;s over sized by approximately 1/16", (2mm). I am sure there are other ESM aircraft owners that have run into a similar problem with the fiberglass engine mount cylinder. Before I start hacking away at the fuselage; I would like to hear what other ESM aircraft owners did to allow the cylinder to fit into the fuselage.<u1:p></u1:p></span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial"><u1:p></u1:p></span><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><span style="font-size: 9pt; font-family: Arial">This ESM Spitfire build has been a real pain in the backside; I had to fix problem after problem that should have been picked up by quality assurance before the Spitfire was released by the manufacturer. Yes the DLE 55 will be spot on.

Sorry to hear that you have had so many problems, cant say I have anything to complain about.

Send me the diamieter of both ends and I will check on my spare tube.

The following measurements of the engine mount cylinder were taken with a digital calliper.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">On the cylinder I have, where the engine bolts on is: 5.140&rdquo; or 130.5mm or 5 9/64&rdquo; Dia.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">The end that inserts into the fuselage is: 5.190&rdquo; or 131.8mm or 5 13/64&rdquo; Dia.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">The fuselage opening that the cylinder inserts into is: 5.123&rdquo; or 130.1mm or 5 1/8&rdquo; Dia.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt"><u1:p></u1:p><o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt">As you can see by the measurements of the mount cylinder, the fuselage opening is too smallby 1.7mm or 3/32&rdquo; diameter to allow insertion of the engine mount cylinder.

ForcesR, don't feel like you are especially unlucky. I finished an ESM t-6 II recently. While it flys and looks great, it was a real PITA. Holes misaligned, parts didn't fit, poorly glued in places and on and on. Just huge amount of extra work. I think it is the price you pay for only paying 1/3 of what the plane should cost. Take your pick - cheap and lot of work, or expensive and lot easier. Now that I'm done, not so bad. At the time I was cussing and shouting at the walls.

Sorry its taken me a while but had to replace my digital calliper. My spare tube measures:

5.128" or 130.29 mm at the engine mount end and 130.51mm at rear end.

If i remember mine was a tight fit.

DB; thank-you for the information, I very much appreciate your time and effort to assist me. Your spare engine mount is smaller in diameter then the one I have, so based on your measurements I am going to order a replacement mount.There is no way I would even try toinsert this oversized engine mount into the fuselage.

Unfortunately I lost my ESM 89" Spitfire during testing. I have a perfectly good engine cowling, set of Spring Air retracts, Likes Line struts, wheels wheel pants, and cannons ready to drop in if anybody interested. Will sell all at a reasonable price. Paul

Yes, not rebuildable. Suspect one of the elevator servos gave out. This plane flies really well and flew it about a dozen times getting the engine settings right. It surprised the hell out of me when it went in. I guess a I'm not meant for a Spitfire. Lost two in a year. Paul

No, I used two elevator servos in tray with carbon fiber pushrods.

What servos were you using?
It seems the only way for an elevator problem with two servos is one of them completely locking up in a full deflection. ( I don't use a y connector on dual elevator servos, I use two channels on the receiver instead)

I think thats where I screwed up. I used Hobby People AM 50 High Torque Metal Gear servos. The plane was flying straight and level, basically hands off, then took a nose dive from 300 feet. I don't think the servo stripped in flight, but rather the vibration caused the electronics in one of the elevator servos to go AWOL. The crash was so bad, there was not much evidence left electronically to analyze the problem. By the way, the two elevator servos were on a Y harness. One going bad will affect the other one.

I have The ESM Giant scale Spitfire with 55 cc DLE-55R engine and I keep having Engine overheating problems. I just ran it today with the cowl off and I have done it a few times and it runs great. The RPM WAS only around 5700 with a 22x10 prop and a 32 to 1 oil to gas ratio . I have cut the cowl so the complete cylinder is showing and back to the firewall in back of the muffler and approx. 1 inch on both sides of the cylinder.. Could it be that it is trapping hot air on the top ? thwere is really no room for the hot air to escape from the top where the crank shaft would be only the area of the cylinder head.. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I saw 1 thread with the wire mesh in the front of the cowl, mine is cut almost similar except mine is cut staight back past the muffler. to the firewall.

Hi everyone;
I'm back after being away from this thread for such a long time. I just have the engine/mount cylinder installation left to do before first flight of my ESM 50cc Spitfire. The reason for my being away for so long was my battle with throat Cancer! I have never smoked in my life and Cancer does not run in my family, so the Doctors think I was exposed to something during my 31 years in the military. The Chemo and Radiation therapy was just down right "BRUTAL". I didn't think I would make it after my weight plunged to 123lbs. The road to rercovery was sure long and slow but I am still here. Viewing the green grass from the top side sure beats having to view it from the under side Lol!

Roger, good to have you back and beating this. This plane flies easily despite having to add 4 lbs of lead in the nose with a 4.2 Sachs. Mine came in a 28 lbs but still felt "light" in the air. Unfortunately lost it when one of the elevator servos hung up in the down position. Make sure you use high quality servos!

especially with after market resin exhaust stacks, cannons, antenna, and rear view mirror!
