RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)

Jett, I have to be honest, this kit is going together really easy and somewhat fast. I don't know if it's because it's an older kit or if it's because it's a break from my B17 I'm working on but either is fine with me lol. I think the hardest thing is deciding whether to glass and paint it or just use covering, I guess it all depends on what mood I'm in when that time gets here.

Not going to build another real soon. The motor was damaged and I need to get it repaired also. The YA main gear came through without a scratch. I will build one later on but not in the near future. It is a very nice flying airplane.

BUMMERhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f.../sad_smile.gifI guess I should count myself lucky then with just tearing out the landing gear on a dead stick landing on Sat. Sorry man, this sometimes is the price we pay for the fun we have. Hope you can salvage something from it.

Ok guys n gals, here's a quick update on what I've done so far. On the wings I don't think I want to take the chance on using the bellcranks so I made some servo trays to fit in the wings themselves so I can use a separate servo for each aileron and flap. In the first pic I glued the servo tray in and they are made out of 1/8th inch ply and hard wood for the screws to hold in the servos. I will lay the servos on their side and this one will work the aileron. I can get into the tray to remove the servo with no troubles. The flap servo tray had to be screwed in and made removable due to the landing gear and as you can see I tried to keep the servos on top of the spars in hopes that I wont have to much trouble balancing the plane after I'm done. I also got the covers for the openings made and those of course will screw down to make it look some what pretty lol...

Has anybody got any pointers on installing the retracts in a ttop flite giant p40? Mine dont seem to line up quit right.

I finished all the work on my Skyshark P-40 and ran the engine on the ground today. No squawks. I guess all I need to do now is fly it. The final weight is 21.5 lbs and I didn't have to add any lead to the nose.

RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)

I have made some progress on both TF 1/7 P-40’s.

My friend and I have changed the electric conversion from the e-Flight Power 60 to the 90. I tested a 17x8 3 blade today. Performance was good and still has 10 amps left till 50 amp max continuous, so I am going to try an 18X8. Plane has not flown, but is close to paint.

Running a 15X7 on the Power 60, and it is going to be tested with a 15X8.

Began work on the DLE-20 gas P-40 again too. It is almost ready to start.

I would like to fly these two back to back to compare the 20cc to the 90 e-Flight.

Will try to post some pics again soon.

Hello P-40 guys. Does anybody market a decent 1/6 scale, about 70-72" wing span P-40 ARF? I like this size warbird because they are the largest that will easily fit in my vehicle. Also already have a CMP Zero, BH FW 190, KMP Hurricane and Flight Models KI -61 Tony. All with wing spans 70-72" and want a P-40 near the same scale.

RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)

HI RBEAN
IV CONVERTED A CMP P40 TO GAS AND W/SPAN IS 72" OR 73".IT DOSNT COME WITH FLAPS BUT THERE EASLY DONE.
MIGHT BE WORTH A LOOK.

RE: P-40 Brotherhood (All P-40's Welcome)

raaf, how does the CMP P-40 fly. I know some fly better than others. My little VQ P-40 flys fine. My kit built Top Flite 60 size flew poorly and was so much work to fly, that I finally decommissioned it and used its hardware elsewhere. I'm planning on using a DLE 30.

Hi Steve. Please add me to the P-40 brotherhood. I just bought a skyshark 1/5 P-40 82" wing which I just love. I will have it out in the spring.
Thanks

Skyshark P-40N First Flight! Today was the day....light winds straight down the runway. After taking the mandatory "glamor shots" I got her fueled and ready to go. The engine started on the first flip...a good sign. The plane taxied out across our rather rough field to the runway without trouble. The CG is set to the farthest forward point and I had to hold full up elevator to keep her from nosing over. The tail was light, but not excessively. The take off was more exciting than I prefer...I gave too much throttle, too fast and she swung to the left and dropped the left wing as she left the ground. Not fun watching your new plane with the wingtip 6" off the ground in a hard bank to the left. Anyway, I survived that and got the plane up and flying and retracted the gear. The DLE 55 with a 20-12 prop pulls this one fast...most of the flight was at 1/2 throttle or less. Plenty of power when its needed to climb and do big round loops. I did some basic rolls and loops and then some slow flight with and without flaps. Stalls are a non-problem...she just drops the nose and keeps on flying. The plane really slows down with the flaps out. After six minutes the TX timer started beeping telling me it was time to land. I did an overhead break into the pattern while dropping the gear and then half flap on downwind and full flap on base. I brought her all the way to the runway with a little power and made a perfect, smooth wheel landing. Success!

The second flight had more issues. As I taxied out the engine quit and when restarted it kept dieing when I advanced the throttle. Back to the pits and pull the cowl. I enriched the high speed needle 1/8 turn and also found that the ignition battery had come loose due to some broken zip ties. One of those cured the problem and the engine was running great again. For the second flight I came up on the power slower and held more right rudder. No wing drop this time but I could see the wings rock just a bit...I need to let the plane build up more speed before lifting off. Once up, she again proved to be an excellent flyer. This time I explored inverted flight and also a couple of snaps and spins. The plane is very nose heavy so I feel safe in taking some weight out of the nose. The second landing bounced just a little but nothing too bad. As I was taxing in the right landing gear came out of the wing. The plywood LG mount broke...I don't know if this was due to the landing, the rough field, or a building fault. Anyway, no other damage, not even a broken prop and the fix will be easy.

BTW, Skyshark R/C is still having a closeout sale on the P-40: http://www.skysharkrc.com/category/Closeout-Hangar-43

When I ordered mine a couple months ago they only had the green version available. Now they are also offering the British camo version. $389 with free shipping! The British version comes with the much better looking landing gear fairings, too.
