primer on panel lines
 

Hi, Just wanted to know what would be the right primer to use when spraying over panel line tape. A water base or oil base. If using enamel, will the tape peel off. I'll be using Benjamin Moore Aluminum enamel paint for the finish. thanks Tim.

I just use the grey Automotive Primer Filler from any auto paint shop.

You can us about any primer but I would not use oil base. Enamel or water based it just fine. You can use automotive primer for a spray can.

Try FC-900 from http:www.stits.com . It builds fast and makes a great bridge between gel coat and your solvent based paints.

I have not had great luck with primers andam still trying different stuff, although I have not tried the primersadvised here.

My last primer was Kiltz oil base stain blocker primer, and I had it tinted gray, I also thinned it and airbrushed it on. ( My touch up gun broken )

I built up my panel lines well and then removed the tape. The finnish was very rough feeling so I gave it a light sanding with fine paper. I almost lost my panel lines in no time, the primer coat was very soft. The burning in on the rivets did not seem all that good, again, soft paint?

Anyway, what I and trying now on my Topflite GS Corsair is : primed and sanded very smooth,cleaned ,then apply panel lines, Then build up the panel lines with 2-3 coats of my final paint which is Warbircolors, using my airbrush. This willput hard smooth coats over/ along the panel lines, then burn in rivets on the hard cured paint, then pull the tape, fine sand the surface alittle, clean, apply final coats of warbirdcolors.

I think this will work very well, It will take several days as I should let the paint dry overnight after every coat. I think I will end up withnice sharp clear panel lines and rivets.

What do you guys think about this approch?

I use good ole color match rattle can primer from Wal-Mart at $1.12 a can. I spray it over the tape, give it a light sand and pull the tape with great results.

I use Bondo brand laquer primer which is readily available at ACE Hardware for $5 a can. It's a relatively good filler primer and sands beautifully. Comes in white, gray, black, and rust colors as well.

@Tom - Regarding burning rivets I always burn mine into a base coat of paint rather than primer. The paint gets much harder and takes the rivets much better in my opinion.

Kiltz stain blocking primer is really just for covering stains on latex paint. Don't know that it would work at all for this use. I've always had good luck with rattle can primers from the auto part stores. I use both the filler primer( for panel lines or areas I'm doing rivets) and sealer primer where I'm not doing rivets and panel lines.
