New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
1 Attachment(s)
Just saw the new Hangar-9 81" P-47 at: http://www.horizonhobby.com/Shop/ByC...ProdID=HAN2700
Only 1 pic and cant tell a lot from it, but there is a downloadable manual at: http://www.horizonhobby.com/ProdInfo...P47_Manual.pdf Looks real nice with plug in wings, & stab. Top of fuse is removable for access to electronics, etc. Has mechanical retracts on the mains with a separate servo for each retract. The retract servos are actually mounted to each retract. It also has oleos on the mains. The wheels appear a bit small, but looks as if there is room to retrofit some larger wheel and well. Tail wheel is not retractable, but is close to scale location and looks like maybe a retract could be engineered. Set-up for 2.2 glow or G-26 gas. So far, I like what I see.[sm=thumbup.gif] |

I just read through the manual. That is a gorgeous bird. They have a winner there.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
About time H9 put flaps on one of their warbirds :D
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I think the mustang 1.50 had flaps old chap........

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
ORIGINAL: SpitfireMKI I think the mustang 1.50 had flaps old chap........ The P-47 does look nice. I like the extras it seems to have. Wonder how it will fly. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I have a friend who has a warbird of this size with mechanical restracts and has had problems with them bending all the time. Too bad they don't offer an upgrade option. Does look nice and they appeared to keep the weight down to help wing loading.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
If the pics in the manual are any indication, the retracts look pretty stout. The frames look a lot like Spring Air 400 series 1/5 scale retracts, so they may be a good air substitute if needed.
I fly Airtronics Stylus radios, and Airtronics makes a proportional retract servo that can be slowed down through the radio. Should work good with these retracts. I have also seen some robot company that makes a kit to turn a standard proportional servo into a 180 degree throw. That would be an option too. Saw a link not too long ago here on RCU, but don't remember where. I'll post it if I see it again. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Cant really tell from the pics if its worth it or not but the price lends comparison to KMP , Yellow and others in that Range . KMP had air retracts at a better price .

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
From what little the picture shows, it looks good. Razorback and camo. I would prefer air retracts or a lower price, but this is definately on the radar screen. I wonder it top-flite will follow suit.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Top Flite was right after them on the big P-51 and I would assume it would be the same for this plane. If they arent, they are going to miss out on some serious cash. Honestly, looking at the instruction manual, the retracts look pretty beefy. After loading the area with epoxy and securing the retracts with some more backing blocks in the wing they look like they should work.
If you can build a kit that big, cover it, and supply what look to be pretty decent retracts for less than 600 bucks....... go for it. I work for a living and have a young baby at home. I couldnt build that plane in a million years of evenings. Hangar 9 can have my money. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
And the empanage servos are inside the fuselage! [sm=thumbup.gif]
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
It does look like a good looking P47. It would be a nice however to not have retracts with the kit for a reduced price. I had to replace my retracts on the World Model Zero cuz it looks like a scared chicken on take-offs. The robart 640 85 degree are perfect fit on the rails and just a bit of Dremel on the strut openning. I like Top Flite's approach of ARC version as well.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I'm glad they made it different looking than the 60 size P47. I'm sure overall it will be a quality product. Other than the retracts, the P51 1.50 hit the mark. After it is released, I'm anxious to hear the jury weigh in on these retracts.

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Come on topflight, where's the giant bubbletop ?!?!?!?!
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Finally! A big, beautiful ARF P-47, and a razorback to boot. I was just beginning to clear my workbench for the TF GS P-47. I'll slide it back in the closet till I retire and build it then. Judging from the manual, appears to be a well engineered model. I like the plug in wing/stab and the airfoiled tail surfaces. Wish it wasn't so glossy, but not a big deal. I think they have another winner!
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Well there goes the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from Top-Flite to H9.... TF better "HUrry up " or they are gonna miss out on a TSUNAMI of CA$H flow..... Can't believe they are letting H9 out do them ...
I have yet to buy a H9 ARF but this one is a WINNER in my Book... I already am setting aside the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ TF ARE YOU THERE????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????? |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I have given it some thought and honestly cant figure out why you could manufacture (via cheap asian sweat shops) a world class giant P-51 and not immediately go into producing another large scale plane using all the same circumstances but with other frame details and covering. I just dont get it. If you can build one, you could simply exchange kits and covering the next week and build another.
Top Flight should have a giant scale Mustang, P 47, and Corsair by now. I think they have some executive decide to milk the Mustang for a while, then put out an ARC version and milk that for a while then think about manufacturing another ARF. Hangar 9 pumps out a new model every few months and for that they should be rewarded with business. That P-47 needs 20 minutes of scotch bright (to kill the shiny finish) and "eat s&!t Adolf" written on one of the bombs, and its ready to go. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I think my eyes decieve me, the retracts actually look usable!!
any idea on price on this thing or did I miss it somewhere? matt |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I believe the price is $569 from H9 and its ETA is late AUGUST...;)
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
DROOOOLL:D:D!!!!!!!!!!, its about time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A little paint and a retract tail wheel, with a top flight cockpit, hmmmm winter project.

Well mine will be getting striped down and fiberglassed then painted. The scheme I have decided on is this. I was going to do a Tuskegee airmen scheme but was having a hard time finding good pictures for detail.

Nice looking scheme and I'm going to keep my eye on this one as well;).
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Anyone know if it has a sheeted wing?
Randy |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Judging from the photos in the assembly manual, it appears to be sheeted. The aileron and flap servos are attached to plywood access panels in the wing panels.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
The aircraft is fully sheeted so should be easy job to glass and paint.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
That was what I was after. It has nice lines just want to get away from plastic covering. Glass and paint is not a big job and looks so much nicer.
Randy |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Randy.
If glassing and painting is not a big job, want to do mine for me:D? I would have no idea where to start, much less having turn out looking good [sm=drowning.gif]. I can just imagine how much time it would take to remove the factory covering job and then fill what the factory covered over. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
That's one of the nice things about Ultracoat, it can be removed pretty easy with a heat gun. Does not leave all the residue behind like Monokote.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I have stripped almost every arf I have ever purchased just for a different look. My last one was a H9 46% Ultimate. Takes about 45minutes to get the covering off. It is sanding the paint down ready for new paint and getting it back on that takes a long time. Steelwooling sounds like a good idea. I might just have to get two of these babies :D
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Does anyone know what the wheel diameter is? They look too small in the picture and a little goofy in my opinion. Other than this, the plane looks great.
I don't know if you could add larger wheels as the wheel wells in the wing are probably already sized for the current wheels. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Guys, any input on the fuse hatch ? Any ideas on making it more concealed if one were to
get rid of the ultracote and fiberglass the fuse? A full cockpit would also be great. I would scrap the mech. retracts in favor of pneumatics. This will be a fun very close to scale bird that could use alot of detail work to make it more realistic. And much cheaper to start out with than say yellow, aerotech, or a full plan kit. Much more quality minded than say KMP or CMP any of those. Also i would throw in a retract tailwheel and doors. This arf would save some time of building say over a top flite also. We will all just have to see how it flies. Definitely go with gasser here, saito 180 is hard to run inverted. I have one on my great planes ryan sta. Do u think the g-26 will fit without cutting the cowl? God i have tons of questions. I have wanted a nice p-47 larger scale razorback for a while now, but dont want to spend thousands. |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Erase. Duplicate post
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Monokote (iron on film in general) can be painted guys, I've done it several times, so stripping and glassing is not 100% necessary for a custom scheme. BTW I think a G-26 would be way too small for this plane IMO.. Fuji has that new 43cc or a newer evolotion gasser that would probally be pretty close to what this plane needs for gas, but I would probally do Moki 210 just cause I'm a glow kind of guy.
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I honestly like the markings they used. I like the whole damn plane. I would also use a Moki 2.10. There is no motor like it on the market. One flip backwards and you have 5 hp waiting to be used! I love them and wouldnt even think about another motor for this ship.
I have also had great experience with painting ultracoat. I scotchbright it first to give it teeth and then the paint sticks like glue and looks great. Now, on the subject of paint scemes,..... didnt the Germans use a few captured ones to train their pilots.....? hummmmm..... http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-...424/p47_g2.jpg |
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
I agree 100% with your post lownloud, but mine will look like this if I do get one.

I LOVE THE Moki's,Mike . I have one in my TFGSP51. For the price,power and the reliablity,it's a great engine.Tom

RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
How do the Moki's run inverted?
|
RE: New 81" P-47 ARF coming from Hangar 9
Just fine, I had one in my worldmodels Giant mustang mounted inverted. only thing is that it was kind of hard to hand start inverted, but I then just started the plane up-side down on a stand and it started on the first flip everytime.
