Hanger 9 P-51 Engine Setup

I have a Super Tiger G90 with a pitts-style muffler to go in the P-51. If I invert the engine, the two pipes from the muffler stick out the left side of the cowl. If I side mount the engine with the pitts pipes going down . the engine head sticks out about a half inch.

The engine runs fine inverted, but which would look better protruding from the cowl, the 2 pipes, or the engine head. Thanks for your opinions.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Personally, I try to preserve the profile of the cowl for the low fly buys, I would rather have something stuck out the side than the bottom.

Unfortunately something is going to be sticking out sideways from the cowl

With the motor inverted, the 2 pipes stick out the left.

With the engine sidemounted, the head sticks out of the right (and the pipes sitck out the bottom as well).

I'm just trying to find the lesser of 2 evils.

Thanks anyways

Stick in in inverted then, as I said, I prefer to have nothing sticking out the bottom.

Are you going to cut a hole for plug access or have an onboard unit?

Simon.

Ahh I got you know. Thats a good point: Keep the bottom clear. I am going to cut a hole for my glow starter. I have been running it inverted without a cowl (as they are on backorder) for about 2 weeks and it runs fine. People at the field were saying the pitts looked dumb sticking out the side, but when I rotated the engine this morning, it was obvious that the engine head would look worse sticking out a 1/2 inch. I appreciate you thoughts

No problem.

The only downside to inverted engines is the possibility of hydraulic lock if you flood them during priming. I wrecked a ST.60 once by slamming on an electric started when the cylinder was full of fuel, live and learn, now I start models with inverted motors upside down on a stand!

you might consider buying a slimline inverted muffler for this engine- so you can have the engine inverted and the muffler pipes come out the bottom of the cowl too. go to the slimline site. search for "slimline mufflers" and it should come up.

Slimline or J-Tec mufflers are cheap and work well- I have a J-Tec on mine.

My setup is an OS 61 SF ABC w/ pump, inverted, with a J-Tec universal inverted muffler- nothing protrudes cowl except what you see here.
